Built-In Appliance Removal in Finished Cabinetry
Purpose
On a freestanding appliance the appliance is the job. On a built-in, the cabinetry is the job, and the appliance is the thing you have to get out of it without touching anything you cannot replace. A wall oven comes out of a face frame the finisher scribed to the wall, a cooktop is bedded in silicone against a stone countertop, a dishwasher sits under a quartz slab with the flooring installed after it went in. In each case the appliance can be removed and the opening cannot be restored by anybody on your truck.
The expensive failures here are not electrical or mechanical. They are a chipped stone edge, a cracked cooktop cutout, a scribe filler split at the glue line, a floor gouged by a leveling foot. All happen in the first ten minutes, before any diagnosis, and all are prevented by documenting the opening and releasing the fasteners in the right order.
Scope
Covers removing a built-in or integrated major appliance from finished cabinetry to service or replace it: wall ovens and combination stacks, drop-in and slide-in cooktops, under-counter dishwashers and refrigeration drawers, column and integrated refrigerators with cabinet panels, and over-range microwaves mounted to cabinets.
Does not cover the repair once the appliance is out, which lives on the howto shelf per appliance, and does not cover freestanding delivery and set, which the delivery and haul-away SOP owns. Does not cover cabinetry modification. If the opening has to be cut, that is a separate quoted scope with the customer's written agreement and, on a stone countertop, a stone fabricator rather than a service tech.

Procedure
Establish before you touch the appliance what the opening is made of and what the appliance weighs, and get a second person if either says so. Acceptance: countertop material identified as stone, engineered stone, solid surface or laminate; cabinet face identified as solid wood, veneered ply or thermofoil; appliance shipping weight known from the manufacturer's specification. Wrong looks like assuming a 30 in wall oven is a one-person lift because the last one was. Stop rule: an oven above what one person can control at chest height coming out of a wall cabinet is a two-person job, full stop, and it gets rescheduled rather than attempted alone. Hazard: an oven at chest height that shifts is caught with the body, which is how backs and fingers get hurt in this trade, and the correct control is a platform set at the oven's own height so the unit slides rather than being held.
Photograph and note the opening's condition before a single fastener moves, including the surfaces the appliance is hiding. Acceptance: images of the face frame, both stiles, the countertop edge at the cutout, the floor in front, and any existing chip, scratch or split, with the customer walked through them at the machine. Wrong looks like a photograph set that starts after the appliance is already out, which proves nothing about who caused what. Stop rule: pre-existing damage found, show the customer and get it acknowledged on the record before proceeding, because a chip you did not cause becomes a chip you did the moment it is discovered after your visit.
Isolate every utility feeding the appliance and prove the isolation at the appliance, not at the panel. Acceptance: branch breaker off and the circuit proved dead with a meter checked on a known live source before and after per 29 CFR 1910.333(b)(2); gas shutoff closed and the appliance confirmed dead by attempting to light it; water stop closed and the line bled at the appliance. Wrong looks like an oven "off at the switch", which on a hardwired 240 V appliance means nothing. Stop rule: a breaker that is unlabelled and cannot be identified by test gets the whole panel de-energized or the job rescheduled with an electrician, and a gas odor at any point means everyone leaves immediately with no switch touched, no light used and no phone used inside, calling the utility from outside.
Break the sealant bond deliberately before applying any lifting force, on anything bedded in silicone. Acceptance: the bond cut all the way around with a thin blade held flat against the appliance flange rather than against the stone, and the appliance visibly free when lifted a fraction at one corner. Wrong looks like a cooktop lifted against an uncut bead, which takes a chip out of the stone cutout edge on the way up and turns a control board job into a countertop claim. Stop rule: the bond will not release cleanly and the blade is starting to load the stone, stop, warm the bead or use a purpose-made sealant softener, and do not lever. Hazard: a blade held at an angle into a stone edge skates, so the cut runs along the appliance flange with the free hand out of the blade's travel.
Support the appliance before releasing the fasteners that hold it, in that order. Acceptance: for a wall oven, a platform or lift set at the oven's floor height and bearing weight before the trim screws come out; for a dishwasher, the leveling feet backed off the counter underside first so releasing the mounting brackets does not drop it. Wrong looks like a wall oven's four trim screws removed with nothing under it, which loads the entire weight onto the customer's cabinet floor and, on a veneered ply carcass, splits the front edge. Stop rule: no way to support the appliance in place, do not release fasteners, and get the equipment or the second person before continuing.
Release fasteners from the outside in and record where each type came from. Acceptance: trim screws, anti-tip or bracket screws, and any concealed panel fixings all accounted for, sorted by location, and the appliance moving freely with hand pressure alone. Wrong looks like an appliance that will not come forward being pulled harder, which is always a missed fastener and never a stuck appliance. Stop rule: any resistance at all, stop pulling and go looking, because on an integrated refrigerator the concealed fixing is usually behind a toe kick or under a hinge cover and is designed to be invisible.
Withdraw the appliance onto its support with the connections still attached and long enough to reach, then disconnect at the appliance. Acceptance: the unit clear of the opening with the supply whip, gas connector or water line visible and undamaged, then disconnected and the ends controlled. Wrong looks like an appliance pulled to the end of a short whip, which tears the connection out of the junction box, or a dishwasher pulled over its own supply line, which crushes it. Stop rule: the connection is not long enough to allow withdrawal, stop at the point of tension, reach in and disconnect first, and do not test the slack.
Protect the empty opening and the floor for the duration of the work. Acceptance: floor covered, cabinet edges taped or padded, and the appliance parked where it cannot be walked into. Wrong looks like a hallway with an oven in it and a customer navigating around it in the dark. Stop rule: the appliance cannot be parked out of traffic, it goes on the truck rather than staying in the house.
On reinstallation, dry-fit before you fasten and re-seal what you cut. Acceptance: the appliance sits square in the opening with even reveals at both stiles before a single screw is driven, and any silicone bed you cut is replaced with a sealant the manufacturer specifies for that surface. Wrong looks like screws driven to pull a misaligned unit square, which distorts the appliance frame and, on a wall oven, causes a door that never seals again. Stop rule: reveals uneven and not correctable by shimming, stop and record it, because on an older opening the cabinet has usually moved and the fix is a scribe or a filler, not force.
The record this produces
The pre-removal condition record is the artifact, and it is the reason this SOP is worth its time:
- Opening record: material of the countertop and the cabinet face, cutout dimensions, appliance weight, whether it took one person or two.
- Condition images: face frame, both stiles, countertop cutout edge, floor, plus a close image of every pre-existing defect, timestamped.
- Customer acknowledgement: signed or initialled at the machine, before removal.
- Fastener map: what came out from where, written well enough that a different tech can reinstall it.
- Reinstall record: reveals confirmed, sealant type used, restraint refitted.
The office holds it against the job. It gets read when a cabinetry claim arrives, which in this trade tends to arrive two to six weeks later when the customer notices something during a clean. Without the condition images taken at step 2 the claim is decided by whose account sounds more confident, and that is not a position a shop wins from.
Worked pass: a wall oven that stopped at step 6 and finished as a two-visit job
A double wall oven, upper cavity not heating, in a stack set into a tall cabinet with a stone-topped run beside it. Step 1 established engineered stone counters, a veneered ply carcass, and a manufacturer shipping weight for the stack that put it firmly in two-person territory, so a second person was scheduled. Step 2 produced eleven images including two pre-existing chips at the front edge of the cabinet floor, which the customer confirmed had been there since the original install. Step 3 proved the circuit dead at the appliance after the breaker was thrown, with the meter checked on a live receptacle before and after.
Step 5 set a lift platform under the lower oven's trim line and took the weight before any screw moved. Step 6 released four trim screws per side and the stack did not move. That is the failure, and the step 6 stop rule is the right one: any resistance means a missed fastener. The tech stopped pulling, and found two additional screws driven through the cabinet side into the oven frame's rear flange, added by whoever installed it, reachable only from inside the adjacent cabinet after removing a shelf.
That discovery changed the job. Backing those out required emptying the adjacent cabinet, which the customer was not present to authorize moving, so the visit stopped there. The stack was left in place, still de-energized and tagged, the breaker left off and labelled, the customer called by the office, and a second visit booked with the cabinet cleared in advance.
The second visit ran through steps 6 to 9 without incident. Reveals dry-fitted before fastening under step 9 came out slightly uneven at the upper right stile, corrected with a shim behind the trim rather than by driving the screw harder.
The stop rule at step 6 saved the cabinet. The alternative available in that moment, pulling harder against two hidden screws with a lift under the stack, tears a rear flange out of a veneered side panel and produces a repair no service tech can make. The cost of the stop rule was one additional visit; the cost of ignoring it was a cabinet.
Had the same resistance appeared on a dishwasher, the usual hidden fastener is a side-mount bracket into the cabinet stile, reachable without emptying anything, so the same stop rule resolves inside the visit.
