Modern appliances are computer-driven. The customer reports "the fridge is making a weird sound" or "the dishwasher won't start" - but the appliance is also displaying an error code or pattern. Reading the code first cuts diagnostic time 50-70%. This is the working framework for the major appliance categories.
Error code basics
Most modern appliances communicate failure modes via:
- Display panel codes (F1, E2, etc.)
- LED blink patterns (count blinks + intervals)
- Beep patterns (count beeps + intervals)
- Sometimes both
Each manufacturer uses its own code system. The manufacturer's service manual is the dictionary; without it, codes are mostly indecipherable.
Per-brand code conventions
Whirlpool / Maytag / KitchenAid / Amana / Jenn-Air (Whirlpool family):

Reading codes
Step 1: Look at the display
- Active code displayed
- Note exactly (capitalization matters; e.g., E1 vs E10)

Step 2: LED blink count

- Patterns: e.g., "3 blinks - pause - 2 blinks" = code 3-2 or 32

Diagnostic procedure
Step 1: Reproduce + read code
- Customer description
- Try to recreate symptom
- Note code displayed
Step 2: Reference manual
- Identify code meaning
- List of likely root causes
Step 3: Visual + simple checks
- Power, water, drain access
- Door latches + switches
- Lint filters, drain filters
- Most-common low-cost fixes first
Step 4: Component test
- Multimeter to test sensors, valves, motors
- Resistance + continuity readings vs published curves
- Voltage at suspect component during operation
Step 5: Quote repair
- Single component (switch, valve, sensor, thermostat): the lowest repair tier
- Control board: a clear step up; the part carries the cost, not the labor
- Major component (compressor, motor): the top repair tier, heavy on both part and labor
- Whole-unit replacement: once you are at the top tier on an older unit, price the new appliance next to the repair and let the customer see both
Common pitfalls
- Replacing components without verifying root cause: same code returns 2 weeks later
- Reading code wrong: F0E1 vs F0E2 means different things; some manuals confusing
- Skipping service mode: missing additional error history
- Treating one code at a time: appliance may show only most-recent code, hiding earlier cascade
- No customer documentation: no record of which fix tried last time
- Wrong manual: appliances of similar models can have different code dictionaries
Service manual sources
Each manufacturer offers:
- The manufacturer's own service portal. Most run one, most gate it behind a free registration or an authorized-servicer account, and it is the only place the current code dictionary for a given model series is authoritative. Search the brand name plus "service portal" rather than trusting a bookmark; the URLs move.
- Parts retailers that host tech sheets and exploded diagrams (PartSelect, AppliancePartsPros and similar). Free to browse, useful for parts numbers, thinner on diagnostics.
- Paid third-party training and manual libraries aimed at appliance techs. Cheap relative to one wasted return trip.
- The tech sheet inside the machine. On most brands it is folded behind the lower access panel or taped inside the console, and it carries that exact model's code list and service-mode entry sequence. Check there before going online, then put it back where you found it.
For service business: register on the portals for the 1-2 brands you see most, and keep one third-party library. Investment: a modest annual line item.

For modern appliance diagnostic:
