Dishwasher Drain Pump Diagnostics
Symptom
Customer reports the dishwasher "isn't draining" or "has water in the bottom after the cycle". Inspection shows 0.5 to 2 inches of water in the tub after the cycle finishes. The dishes may be clean or unclean depending on whether the wash cycle completed before drain failure.
This is one of the highest-volume dishwasher service calls. Pump-out failures account for roughly 30 to 40 percent of all dishwasher service tickets, exceeded only by "not cleaning" complaints (which often turn out to be related to drain issues anyway: dirty water from a partial drain produces dirty dishes the next cycle).
The reflex assumption is "the drain pump is bad". In practice, the drain pump itself is the actual root cause about 35 percent of the time. The other 65 percent of "pump-out" failures trace to clogs in the drain path, air-gap issues, or installation-side problems that the dishwasher cannot fix.

How a dishwasher drains
Modern dishwashers use a small drain pump (separate from the wash pump in most modern designs; some older designs share pumps).
Drain sequence:
- Cycle completes wash and rinse phases
- Controller signals drain pump
- Drain pump impeller pulls water from the sump
- Water flows up the drain hose
- Drain hose connects to either an air gap or directly to the disposer / drain tee
- Water flows through the disposer or drain to the sanitary system
A failure at any point in the sequence prevents drainage. The diagnostic walks the path from sump to sanitary.
Diagnostic decision tree
Step 1: Visual check
Open the dishwasher. Note:
- Water level in the tub (1/4 inch is normal residual; 1 inch+ is a problem)
- Color and clarity of the water (cloudy with food debris vs clear)
- Visible debris in the filter (some brands have removable filters in the floor of the tub)
Remove and clean the filter. On many modern dishwashers (Bosch, Miele, GE Profile post-2010, KitchenAid post-2014), the filter is removable and requires periodic cleaning. A customer who has never cleaned the filter may have years of food debris compacted against it.
Step 2: Manual drain test
Most dishwashers have a "drain only" diagnostic cycle. Initiate it:
- Bosch: press "Cancel" and "Drain"
- KitchenAid / Whirlpool: press "Cancel" + "High Temp Wash" or use the diagnostic mode
- GE / Frigidaire: press "Cancel" + "Drain" or use specific diagnostic
- Samsung / LG: press "Power" twice or use the diagnostic mode entered via specific buttons
Listen for the pump motor. If it runs but no water moves, the obstruction is downstream of the pump. If the pump does not run at all, the issue is at the pump or control board.
Step 3: Check the drain hose
The drain hose runs from the pump outlet to the drain destination. Disconnect the hose at the destination (typically a hose clamp at the disposer or the air gap):
- Place the hose end in a bucket
- Run a drain cycle
- If water flows freely, the hose is clear and the issue is downstream (at the disposer or sanitary connection)
- If water does not flow, the obstruction is in the hose itself or upstream at the pump
Common drain-hose obstructions:
- Food debris (broccoli stalks, popcorn kernels, fruit pits)
- Grease accumulation (older installs)
- Hose itself crimped or kinked
- Hose connection improperly routed
Step 4: Check the air gap (if installed)
An air gap is a brass or plastic cylinder on the countertop near the sink. The dishwasher drain hose connects to the air gap inlet; the air gap outlet connects to the disposer or drain tee.
To inspect:
- Unscrew the air gap cap
- Look for debris inside
- Clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner
A clogged air gap is one of the most common drain-fail causes in homes with air gaps. The customer who recently had a clogged disposer event likely has debris in the air gap from the back-pressure.
Step 5: Check the disposer
If the dishwasher drains into the disposer (most common US install):
- Run the disposer with water for 30 seconds
- Verify disposer drains normally
- Verify no clog in the disposer or downstream pipes
A clogged disposer backs water up the dishwasher drain hose into the dishwasher. The fix is the disposer, not the dishwasher.
For new dishwasher installs: the disposer has a "knockout plug" on the inlet where the dishwasher hose connects. If the plug was not knocked out during installation, the dishwasher cannot drain into the disposer. The first cycle floods the tub. Verify the plug is removed before assuming pump or hose failure.
Step 6: Check the high loop or air gap
The drain hose should rise at least 32 inches above the floor before descending to the disposer or air gap. This "high loop" prevents siphoning of disposer / drain water back into the dishwasher.
Without a high loop:
- Water from the disposer or sanitary system siphons back into the dishwasher between cycles
- The dishwasher appears to have a drain problem; actually it had drained, but water came back
- Standing water accumulates over days
Many older installs lack a high loop. Code typically requires a high loop OR an air gap; some jurisdictions strictly require the air gap.
Add a high loop:
- Strap the drain hose to the underside of the countertop with a hose clamp
- The high point should be at the underside of the cabinet top, near the sink
- Verify the hose does not slope continuously downward from the dishwasher to the disposer
Step 7: Test the drain pump
If steps 1 to 6 are clean and the pump still does not drain, test the pump:
Kill power at the breaker before any part of this. A dishwasher drain pump sits in standing water and the terminals are live during the drain phase.
- Sponge the tub dry so you are not working in standing water, then pull the filter and sump cover to reach the pump inlet.
- Turn the impeller by hand. It should spin freely with light drag. Seized means a failed bearing or a foreign object (glass chips, a fruit pit, wire twist-ties). Free-spinning with no resistance at all can mean a stripped impeller hub, which spins on the shaft and moves no water.
- Check the winding resistance across the pump terminals with the connector unplugged. Compare to the value in the service manual for that model. Open circuit condemns the pump. A dead short condemns the pump and tells you to check the board output before you power the new one up.
- Check winding-to-ground. Any continuity from either terminal to the pump housing is a grounded winding. Replace the pump, and expect it to have been tripping the GFCI or blowing the board's pump output.
- Command a drain in test mode with the pump connected and meter for line voltage at the pump terminals. Voltage present with no pump response condemns the pump. No voltage present with the board commanding drain moves the diagnosis to the board or its harness.
- Watch the harness and connector while you meter. Melted insulation, a browned connector shell, or a green-corroded terminal at the pump is a very common find on units that live under a leaking valve, and replacing the pump without the connector puts you back in the same house.
- Bench-verify flow if it all tests good. A pump that meters correctly and spins freely can still be worn to the point it will not lift water up a high loop. Drop the outlet into a bucket, power the pump from the appliance under a commanded drain, and watch actual flow rate. Weak flow with a clear path is a worn pump.
If the pump tests good on every point above, the fault is upstream at the control board output or the harness between them, which is rank 8 on the frequency table and rarely where you should land first.
