End-of-Visit Operation Demonstration
Purpose
Most callbacks in this trade are not repairs that failed. They are repairs that were never demonstrated, so nobody found out on the day that the fault was still present, that a second fault was hiding behind the first, or that the customer's actual complaint was never the thing that got fixed. The last ten minutes of a visit is the cheapest diagnostic time a shop buys, and the only time the customer is there to tell you the noise they called about is still happening.
It has a second job: it is where the customer learns what was done, what is normal now, and what would mean call us back. A customer who was never told that a new oven element smells for its first cycles will call it in as a fault, and that call costs the shop a truck roll for a correctly completed repair.
Scope
Covers the closing sequence on any completed repair or installation visit: reproducing the original complaint as absent, restoring everything the visit disturbed, handing operation to the customer, and closing the record.
Does not cover the repair itself, and does not cover the delivery-specific set and level checks, which the delivery and haul-away SOP owns. Does not cover the leak witness on a water connection or the radiation leakage survey after microwave work, both of which are acceptance tests belonging to those SOPs and which must have already passed before this sequence begins.
What this demonstration is not
The failure mode this SOP exists to stop is a test that proves the appliance has power rather than proving the fault is gone. Four things that do not count as a demonstration, stated plainly because every one of them is common:
- Lights on and a display responding. A control board that boots proves nothing about a heating circuit.
- A cycle started and abandoned while you pack up. Most appliance faults present at a specific point in the cycle, and it is rarely the first minute.
- A test run in diagnostic or service mode. Service mode bypasses the sensors and interlocks the customer's normal cycle depends on, so it can pass while the real cycle fails.
- Your word for it. The customer has to see the symptom absent, on the setting they use.

Procedure
Re-read the original complaint in the customer's words before you demonstrate anything, and demonstrate against that, not against your diagnosis. Acceptance: the complaint quoted back and the customer agreeing that is what they called about. Wrong looks like a tech who fixed a drain fault demonstrating a drain when the customer called about water on the floor during spin, which are two different claims. Stop rule: the complaint as stated does not match what you repaired, do not close, re-open the diagnosis on this visit.
Run the actual cycle the customer uses, on the setting they use, from start to a defined observable end point. Acceptance: the cycle reaches the stage that contains the reported fault and passes it, with the stage named on the record. On a washer that means through the spin, on a dishwasher through fill, wash, drain and the heat stage if the complaint touched drying, on an oven to setpoint confirmed with a probe rather than by the display alone. Wrong looks like a two-minute run on a cycle nobody uses. Stop rule: the cycle length exceeds the time available, run the segment containing the fault to completion and say plainly on the record which segments were not run, because an honest partial demonstration is useful and a claimed full one is not.
Verify the fault is absent by the same measurement that identified it, not by absence of complaint. Acceptance: the measurement that found the fault repeated and now in range, for example an exhaust temperature rise present on a dryer that had none, a fill valve passing rated flow, an evaporator fan running continuously through a cooling call. Wrong looks like "seems fine now", which is how an intermittent gets signed off. Stop rule: the measurement cannot be repeated because the fault was intermittent, say so, and offer the customer either a monitoring period with a defined check-back or a further diagnostic, rather than closing it as fixed.
On any gas appliance, fire it with your own carbon monoxide monitor running and the venting confirmed intact before you invite the customer to stand beside it. Acceptance: a personal CO monitor on your person and reading clear throughout the firing, the flue or vent connected and undamaged, and a stable flame pattern. Wrong looks like demonstrating a gas range or dryer with the customer at your shoulder and nothing measuring the air. Stop rule: any CO indication, shut the appliance down at the gas shutoff, get everyone out of the room, ventilate, and do not restart it for the demonstration; and if you smell gas at any point, everyone leaves the building immediately without touching a switch, without using a light and without using a phone inside, and the utility is called from outside.
Restore everything the visit disturbed and confirm each item physically. Acceptance: breaker back on and labelled, water stop reopened, gas valve open and any joint you disturbed re-tested with leak solution or a detector, settings returned to the customer's own values, child locks as found, panels and toe kicks refitted, and any restraint such as a range anti-tip bracket re-engaged and verified by lifting the front against it. Wrong looks like a diagnostic setting left in place, or a toe kick propped rather than fastened. Stop rule: a restraint that cannot be refitted means the appliance is not left in service, because an unrestrained freestanding range is where the tidy-up step is a safety step.
Hand the appliance to the customer and have them run it once themselves while you watch. Acceptance: the customer starts the appliance unaided on the cycle they use, and confirms out loud that the original symptom is gone. Wrong looks like the tech operating it while narrating, which teaches nothing and catches nothing. Stop rule: the customer cannot make it work, that is a finding about the repair or the controls, not about the customer, and it gets resolved before you leave.
Explain what was replaced and what is now normal, in plain language, including the things that would otherwise read as faults. Acceptance: the customer knows the failed part, and knows the expected transients: a new oven element or a new dryer heating element gives off an odour for its first cycles, a refrigerator's first ice batches after a line disturbance get discarded, a new compressor runs long while the cabinet pulls down, a repaired washer may sound different because a worn part is no longer worn. Wrong looks like an unexplained smell that turns into a call the same evening. Stop rule: none needed, but if you cannot say what changed, you have not finished the diagnosis.
State the warranty on this repair in writing, with its duration and its scope. Acceptance: parts and labor durations for the work you performed written on the invoice, plus what is not covered, typically an unrelated failure or damage. Wrong looks like a verbal "it is covered", which becomes a dispute with no document. Stop rule: the customer asks whether a different symptom would be covered, do not answer it at the machine; the office answers with the terms in front of them.
Name the two lists before you leave: what is normal, and what means call us back. Acceptance: the customer can state at least one thing in each list. Wrong looks like "call if there are any problems", which produces calls about normal transients and silence about real ones. Stop rule: take the signature only after both lists have been given, because a signature on an undemonstrated repair proves nothing about the repair.
The record this produces
- Complaint quoted: the customer's original words, and their confirmation the symptom is absent.
- Cycle demonstrated: which cycle, which setting, which segments ran, which did not and why.
- Verification measurement: the value that identified the fault, repeated, with its result.
- Restoration: breaker, water, gas re-test, settings, panels, restraint, each confirmed.
- Customer operation: confirmed they ran it unaided.
- Explanation: expected transients named, warranty duration and scope written, both lists given.
- Signature: taken after the demonstration, not before.
The office reads it to close the job. The manager reads it during a callback review, where the first question is whether a full cycle was demonstrated and what it showed. A callback on a job showing a demonstrated cycle and a repeated measurement is a genuinely new event; a callback with no demonstration is the shop paying twice for the same visit.
Worked pass: a dryer no-heat repair that failed its own demonstration
An electric dryer, no heat, tumbling normally. The repair had already been done: an open thermal fuse replaced and the failed element confirmed. Step 1 quoted the complaint back, "it runs but the clothes come out wet and cold", and the customer agreed.
Step 2 started a timed cycle on high heat rather than a short air-fluff test, with the plan to run it to a defined end point rather than to a glance. Step 3 took the measurement that had identified the fault: exhaust temperature rise at the vent hood outside, which had been absent before the repair. At three minutes there was clear heat at the hood.
The demonstration failed at about twelve minutes. The heat stopped, the drum kept tumbling, and the exhaust went cool. That is the same symptom the customer called about, arriving later in the cycle than the first check would ever have caught.
The step 3 stop rule applied: do not close. The tech re-opened the diagnosis on the visit and found the answer in the fuse rather than in the element. A thermal fuse is a safety device, and a safety device that opens has usually done so because it was asked to, so the correct question was why it opened rather than which part to fit next. The vent run was restricted, a long flexible run with a crushed section behind the machine and heavy lint accumulation, so the dryer overheated on a sustained cycle and the replacement fuse's associated protective device cut the heat exactly as designed.
That converted the visit. The vent was cleared, the crushed flexible section replaced with rigid metal duct, the run re-checked for length and bends against the manufacturer's stated maximum, and the cycle re-run from the beginning under step 2. On the second run the heat held to the end point and the exhaust rise at the hood was present throughout rather than for the first minutes only.
Steps 5 through 9 then ran as written. The customer started a full load herself under step 6, was told the new element would smell for its first cycles, and got both lists under step 9: normal is a warm smell on the first two or three loads, call us back is heat that stops partway through a cycle, which is precisely the symptom she had just watched be diagnosed.
The finding generalizes past dryers. The original repair was competent and the parts were correct, and it would have gone out as complete on any test shorter than twelve minutes. What caught it was running the cycle to a defined end point, and what solved it was refusing to treat an opened safety device as the failed component. A shop that demonstrates for two minutes learns the same thing five days later, from the customer, at its own cost.
