Garbage Disposal Replacement Standard

Purpose

Swapping a disposal is the easy part of this job. The callbacks come from two things that have nothing to do with the motor: a dishwasher knockout plug left in place or left loose inside the grind chamber, and a discharge joint made up to a trap the new unit no longer lines up with. Both are invisible at handover and both surface within a week.

The third thing this standard exists for is the injury. A disposal chamber is full of impeller edges and whatever the household dropped in it, and the wall switch is not an isolation. Every hand that has been degloved in one went in with the breaker still closed.

Scope

Replacing a residential or small commercial under-sink continuous-feed or batch-feed food waste disposer: condemning the old unit, the sink flange and mount, the dishwasher drain connection, the discharge to the trap, the electrical connection, and the leak and load test.

It does not cover clearing a jam on a unit that is still serviceable, drain stoppage beyond the trap, which is a drain contractor's scope, or any change to the fixture drain, vent or trap position, which is licensed plumbing work in most jurisdictions and gets handed off rather than improvised.

The safety gate before anything goes under the sink

No hand enters the grind chamber, ever, isolated or not. Impellers, shell fragments and broken glass live in there. Anything dropped in comes out with tongs or a magnet with the circuit locked out, and if it cannot be recovered that way the unit is not run.

Open the branch circuit, lock and tag it, and prove dead at the unit. The wall switch is a control, not an isolation. Prove dead with the meter checked on a known live source before and after per NFPA 70E-2021, 120.5, with work practices per 29 CFR 1910.333(b)(2) for qualified persons under 29 CFR 1910.332 and 1910.399. A cord-connected unit gets unplugged with the plug kept in sight. If it will not prove dead, nothing is opened and the isolation goes to an electrician.

The unit will drop, and you will be under it. A disposal is a solid weight and it comes free the instant the mounting ring lets go. Support it on a block, a bucket or your knee before the ring is turned, and never release the mount while lying with your face under the outlet.

Drain water is a biological contact route. Gloves for the whole disconnection, no touching your face, and wash before eating. Sealants carry their own routes: follow the label on any putty or silicone, and check the sink manufacturer's instruction before using plumber's putty, because it permanently stains some composite and stone sinks.

The procedure

  1. Prove the unit needs replacing before quoting one. Free the rotor with the hex wrench at the base, press the overload reset, and try it. Acceptance: replacement justified by one of a rotor that will not free, a motor that hums without turning, a leak between the upper and lower housing, or an overload that will not hold. Wrong looks like a jam sold as a failure. Stop rule: a unit that frees and runs is a jam clearance, and the ticket says so. Hazard: the circuit is already open for this, and the hex wrench goes in from below, never a hand from above.

  2. Isolate, lock and tag, and prove dead at the unit. Acceptance: 0 V line to neutral and line to ground at the disposal's terminals, meter proved live either side, or the cord unplugged and in sight. Wrong looks like relying on the wall switch being down. Stop rule: a circuit that will not prove dead, or an unidentifiable breaker, goes to an electrician. Hazard: the connection point sits in a cabinet you cannot see into while reaching, so the meter goes in before the hand.

  3. Record the configuration, then drain, disconnect and support the old unit off its mount. Measure from the underside of the sink flange to the discharge outlet centerline and note where the trap weir sits. Acceptance: bucket under, standing water drained, discharge tube and dishwasher hose off, unit supported before the mounting ring is turned, and both measurements written down. Wrong looks like the unit hitting the trap on the way down. Stop rule: a trap or tailpiece cracked during removal converts this into plumbing work and is disclosed, not glued. Hazard: drain water contact under the gate above, and the support goes in first because this is the step that drops weight onto a face.

  4. Set the new sink flange with the seal the sink manufacturer allows. Scrape the old sealant, clean the opening, bed the flange, and set the mounting assembly per the instructions. Acceptance: an even bead squeezed out around the full circumference, the flange pulled down square, excess cut away. Wrong looks like a gap in the bead at one side, which is the leak you find at step 7. Stop rule: where the sink instructions prohibit putty, the supplied gasket is used and no substitute is improvised. Hazard: sealant per its label, and the sink edge and old flange cut, so gloves stay on.

  5. Make the knockout decision on the bench, and account for the plug you removed. A new unit ships with the dishwasher inlet plugged. Acceptance: with a dishwasher connected, the plug is punched out and physically in your hand with every fragment accounted for, confirmed by looking into the chamber with a light; with no dishwasher, the plug stays in and that is written down. Wrong looks like a plug punched through and left rattling in the chamber, which returns as a noise call or a jammed impeller. Stop rule: any piece unaccounted for means the unit is inverted and shaken over the bench until it is recovered, and it is not mounted until then. Hazard: the punch drives toward your other hand, so the unit is braced on the bench, and the chamber is searched with a light and tongs, never fingers.

  6. Mount the unit and make up the discharge, checking that the drain still falls. Hang the unit on the mount, fit the discharge elbow with its gasket, and connect to the trap. Acceptance: continuous fall from the disposal outlet to the trap weir with no section rising, the slope at or above the minimum the adopted plumbing code sets for that drain size, slip nuts hand tight plus the manufacturer's stated turn, and the dishwasher hose clamped with the high loop or air gap the local requirement calls for. Wrong looks like a taller new unit putting its outlet below the trap inlet, which no tightening fixes. Stop rule: if the fall is gone, hand the trap change to a licensed plumber rather than forcing the tube. Hazard: overhead work with the unit's weight now on the mount, so the ring is confirmed fully engaged and locked before any hand comes off it.

  7. Restore power and run the leak and load test with the customer present. Remove the lock and tag, close the breaker, then run water alone, then water with the unit running, then a normal load of scrap. Acceptance: no drip at the sink flange, discharge gasket or any slip nut after two minutes of continuous flow, the switch operating only this unit, any GFCI device tripping and resetting on test, the dishwasher draining without backup, and the reset button holding under load. Wrong looks like a bead at the flange the tech dries and calls seepage. Stop rule: a leak at the flange means the unit comes back down and the flange is re-bedded, not tightened further. Hazard: this puts power and water back together with someone at the sink, so the switch is operated from a dry position and hands stay clear of the opening while the unit runs.

The record this produces

  • Condemning finding: which of the four justified replacement, and the jam clearance attempt that preceded it.
  • Isolation: the prove-dead readings at the unit, or the unplugged confirmation.
  • Geometry: flange-to-outlet dimension on the old unit and the new one, and the remaining fall to the trap weir.
  • Knockout: dishwasher present or not, plug removed or left in, and the accounting that every piece came out.
  • Seal: putty or gasket, and why, with the sink material named.
  • Test: flow duration, each joint checked, GFCI test result, dishwasher drain result.

The knockout line is the one that answers a callback in a sentence instead of a return visit.

One run of this standard, filled in

A ten-year-old continuous-feed unit under a stainless double bowl, dishwasher drains into it. Complaint: hums, will not turn, water backing up.

  • Step 1: hex wrench frees nothing, motor hums with no rotation after several attempts, overload resets and trips again. That is three of the four findings the acceptance names, and any one of them is enough. Pass.
  • Step 2: breaker open, locked and tagged. Unit terminals read 0 V line to neutral and 0 V line to ground, meter proved either side. Pass.
  • Step 3: flange underside to old discharge outlet centerline measures 6.5 in. Trap weir sits 2.0 in below that outlet. Water drained, hose and tube off, unit supported on a bucket before the ring was turned. Pass.
  • Step 4: old putty scraped, new flange bedded, even bead all round, excess cut away. Sink is stainless, so putty is allowed here. Pass.
  • Step 5: plug punched on the bench. It came out in two pieces and only one was in hand. Fail. Stop rule taken: unit inverted and shaken over the bench, second piece recovered, chamber checked with a light and confirmed empty. Both pieces accounted for against the one disc they came from, and only then was the unit mounted.
  • Step 6: the new unit measures 8.0 in from flange underside to outlet centerline. 8.0 minus 6.5 is 1.5 in lower than the old one, so of the 2.0 in that sat between the old outlet and the trap weir, 2.0 minus 1.5 leaves 0.5 in of fall. Across the 8 in horizontal run to the trap that is 0.5 divided by 8, or 0.0625 in per in, which is 0.75 in per foot. That is above the 1/4 in per foot minimum the adopted plumbing code sets for this drain size, so the trap stays where it is. Slip nuts made up, dishwasher hose clamped with a high loop. Pass.
  • Step 7: lock and tag off, breaker closed. Two minutes of continuous flow, no drip at flange, discharge gasket or any slip nut. Switch operates this unit only. The under-sink receptacle is GFCI protected; it tripped on test and reset. Dishwasher drained clear on a rinse cycle. Reset button held through a load of scrap. Pass.

The 0.5 in is the number worth carrying off this job. A shop that does not measure before the old unit comes down learns about the height difference with the new unit hanging and the customer watching, and the usual improvisation from there is a slip joint pulled up level, which holds water and eventually smells.
