Gas Range Burner and Igniter Service

Purpose

A hot surface igniter is condemned on the current it draws, not on whether it glows. A weak igniter glows a convincing orange and the gas never arrives, because the igniter is the current-sensing element in series with the oven safety valve: below the valve's pull-in current the valve stays shut however bright the igniter looks.

Techs who judge by glow condemn the valve. The valve is the expensive part, the repair fails, and the second visit fits the igniter that should have gone in first. The other half of this standard is flame quality, which is what puts carbon monoxide into a kitchen when nobody is measuring.

Scope

Residential and light commercial gas ranges, cooktops and gas ovens: surface burner ports and caps, spark electrodes and the spark module, the oven hot surface igniter or spark ignition, the oven safety valve as a measured circuit element, air shutters, and flame quality verification with a personal carbon monoxide monitor.

It does not cover connecting the appliance to the gas supply or the leak check on that connection, which is the gas range connection and leak check standard and runs first any time a fitting is opened. It does not cover LP conversion, gas piping upstream of the appliance shutoff, or electric ovens.

The safety gate before a burner is lit

On any gas odor at any point, everybody leaves the building immediately. No switch touched, no light turned on or off, no phone used inside, no appliance operated. Call the gas utility from outside and do not re-enter until they release the building.

Close the appliance shutoff before opening anything, and open the appliance circuit before metering anything. Both isolations, both proved: no flow on a light attempt, and 0 V at the appliance terminals with the meter proved live before and after per NFPA 70E-2021, 120.5, with work practices per 29 CFR 1910.333(b)(2) for qualified persons under 29 CFR 1910.332 and 1910.399.

Wear a personal carbon monoxide monitor for every step where a burner runs. Carbon monoxide is odorless and a burner making it can still look acceptable. Our default action level is 35 ppm at breathing height, which matches the NIOSH recommended 8-hour exposure limit; set your own if you have one, but write the number down rather than working to a feeling. At that level, shut the burners, open a window and a door, clear the kitchen, and do not relight until the flame fault is found.

A burner cap sits on a hot burner head. Handle it cold or with a mitt, and if it is cleaned with a solvent or oven cleaner, read that product's safety data sheet for its inhalation and skin routes and ventilate; a respirator named on a label is a control only under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134, so without that program the product does not get used.

The procedure

  1. Name the branch before opening anything. Establish which of three the complaint is: no spark, sparks but does not light, or lights with a bad flame. Acceptance: one branch written on the ticket, with the specific burner identified. Wrong looks like "the whole range is bad" from a customer with one clogged port. Stop rule: any gas odor at this point ends the visit at the safety gate, not here. Hazard: this step operates burners, so the CO monitor is on and the kitchen is ventilated.

  2. Close the appliance shutoff and prove no flow, then isolate the circuit and prove dead. Acceptance: no ignition on a light attempt with the shutoff closed, and 0 V at the appliance terminals with the meter proved live either side. Wrong looks like a burner that still lights with the shutoff closed, which means the valve is passing. Stop rule: a passing shutoff is a gas fitter's call; stop, do not disconnect anything, and hand off. Hazard: an open joint plus any ignition source is the event this step prevents, so no torch, no smoking, no exposed-lamp work light, and no operating the igniter while a fitting is loose.

  3. Strip, clean and reseat the surface burner ports and caps. Lift the caps and heads, clear each port with a drill bit turned by hand or a stiff wire, never a match head or a toothpick that can break off. Acceptance: every port passes light, the cap seats flat with no rock, and the electrode is centerd in its notch. Wrong looks like a cap seated proud on debris, which throws flame sideways at the pan support. Stop rule: a cracked cap or a burnt-through head is replaced, not cleaned. Hazard: sharp port edges and old grease, so gloves on and clean wet rather than blowing debris out with compressed air.

  4. Inspect the spark system dry. Look at each electrode ceramic for hairline cracks and carbon tracking, check the lead routing away from metal, and confirm the electrode gap against the service data. Acceptance: no crack, no tracking, gap at the published dimension, leads not touching sheet metal. Wrong looks like a range where every burner sparks whenever any knob is turned, which is one shorted switch or a wet electrode, not eight faults. Stop rule: a cracked ceramic is replaced; it is not dried and returned to service. Hazard: the spark module stores enough charge to make you flinch into a sharp cabinet, so keep the circuit isolated for this step.

  5. Measure hot surface igniter current draw against the published band, and time the gas arrival. Clamp one conductor of the igniter circuit with the circuit restored for the test, call for bake, and record steady current and the seconds from power-on to gas arriving. Acceptance: current inside the band the service data publishes for that valve and igniter, and gas arriving inside the published time. As a shape, round igniter families commonly sit near 3.2 to 3.6 A and flat families near 2.5 to 3.0 A, but the governing figure is the one in the data for your model. Wrong looks like a bright orange igniter and no gas, which is a low-current igniter, not a failed valve. Stop rule: current below the published band condemns the igniter and nothing else is ordered on that visit; current inside the band with no gas arriving moves the fault to the valve or the control. Hazard: this test runs live with gas available, so the CO monitor is on, the clamp goes on one insulated conductor only, and no hand is inside the burner box while the valve can open.

  6. Fit the part, restore gas and power, and verify flame and atmosphere. Refit, open the shutoff, close the breaker, then leak check any joint you disturbed with a leak-detection fluid listed for gas piping, an approved method under NFPA 54 (ANSI Z223.1) in the edition your jurisdiction has adopted, and run every burner. Acceptance: no bubble growth at any disturbed joint, a stable blue flame with a distinct inner cone at every surface burner and at bake and broil, and the CO monitor below the action level through a full bake and broil run. Wrong looks like yellow tipping, lifting off the port, or a lazy rolling flame, which point at orifice, air shutter or supply. Stop rule: any bubble means close the shutoff, break the joint and remake it, and never chase a leak with burners lit or a flame. Hazard: this is the step that puts fuel and ignition back together with the customer in the house, so the room is ventilated, the monitor is on, and nobody stands over an open burner box while it lights.

  7. Prove the anti-tip and close out. Confirm the bracket is fitted per the manufacturer's instructions, which supply it under ANSI Z21.1, the standard these appliances are listed to, and the range leg is engaged in it, then lift the front of the range gently. Acceptance: the range resists tipping with the bracket engaged, and every panel, grate and knob removed is back on. Wrong looks like a bracket screwed to finish flooring, or one the leg never enters because the range was moved for this repair and pushed back short. Stop rule: a range that cannot be secured is not left in service; tell the customer and document it. Hazard: an unsecured range with a child on an open oven door is the tip event this step prevents, so it happens before handover, not after.

The record this produces

A burner record on the ticket and the equipment file.

  • Branch: no spark, sparks but does not light, or lights with a bad flame, and which burner.
  • Isolation: the no-flow result with the shutoff closed, and the prove dead result at the terminals.
  • Igniter: measured current, the published band it was compared against, and the seconds to gas arrival. All three, because the measurement alone condemns nothing.
  • Leak check: the joints disturbed and the result at each.
  • Flame and atmosphere: flame condition at every burner and the highest CO reading seen, against the stated action level.
  • Anti-tip: engaged and proved, or the reason it could not be.

Without the published band written beside the measured current, that number means nothing to the next reader.

One run of this standard, filled in

A five-year-old freestanding gas range, complaint that the oven takes forever and sometimes never heats. Surface burners fine.

  • Step 1: branch is sparks but does not light, oven only. No gas odor. Pass.
  • Step 2: shutoff closed, light attempt made, no ignition. Circuit opened, 0 V at the terminals, meter proved live either side. Pass.
  • Step 3: surface burners stripped while access was open, all ports pass light, caps seat flat. Pass.
  • Step 4: electrodes clean, no cracks, gap at the published dimension, leads clear of metal. Pass.
  • Step 5: circuit restored for the test, clamp on one igniter conductor, bake called. Igniter glows bright orange. Steady current reads 2.9 A. The service data for this model publishes 3.2 to 3.6 A for the round igniter and valve pair. 3.2 minus 2.9 is 0.3 A below the bottom of the published band. Gas never arrived in three attempts. Fail. Stop rule taken: the igniter is condemned and the safety valve is not ordered.
  • Step 5 repeated after fitting the new igniter: steady current 3.4 A, inside the band, gas arriving at 42 seconds, inside the published time.
  • Step 6: no gas joint was opened, recorded as none disturbed rather than left blank. All surface burners and both oven burners show stable blue flame with a clear inner cone. CO monitor peaked at 6 ppm at breathing height through a full bake and broil run, under the 35 ppm action level. Pass.
  • Step 7: bracket present, rear leg engaged, range resists a front lift. Grates and knobs back on. Pass.

A previous visit had condemned the gas valve on this range because the igniter glowed. 2.9 A is a glow the eye accepts and a current the valve does not.

When the call does not run as written

A gas odor at any point. Everybody out, nothing switched, call the utility from outside. The repair does not resume until they release the building, and that goes on the ticket with the time.

The shutoff will not hold. Hand to a licensed gas fitter and do not relight the appliance. Shut it down at its own controls rather than disconnecting anything.

The flame will not come clean after cleaning and air shutter adjustment. That is orifice sizing or supply pressure, not port debris. Do not drill or modify an orifice under any circumstances. Confirm the fuel on the rating plate against the house supply and hand off if they disagree.

The CO monitor reaches the action level. Take the safety-gate response, then write the reading and the time on the ticket.
