Gas Range Connection and Leak Check Standard

Purpose

A gas range connection is the one thing an appliance tech does that can level a house. This standard makes the connection reproducible: a new listed connector every time, a leak check on every joint with a method that cannot lie, and a written record of the pressures and the flame condition the tech actually saw.

The failures it prevents are all common. A reused flexible connector whose flare seat was work-hardened by its first installation. Pipe dope smeared onto a flare seat, which stops the metal-to-metal seal from making and leaves a joint sealing on compound until the compound moves. A leak check done by smell. And a range left unstrapped, which is a tip hazard for a child pulling on an open oven door and is required by the appliance's own listing.

Scope

Connecting, reconnecting or disconnecting a residential gas range, cooktop or wall oven at an existing appliance shutoff valve, plus the leak check and the operating verification that follow.

It does not cover gas piping upstream of the appliance shutoff, including replacing the shutoff itself: that is licensed gas-fitting scope in most jurisdictions and step 3 hands off to it. It does not cover LP conversion beyond installing the manufacturer's own kit per its instructions, nor commercial cooking equipment.

Before any fitting is opened

On any gas odor at any point, everybody leaves the building immediately. No switch is touched, no light turned on or off, no phone used inside, no appliance operated. Call the gas utility from outside and do not re-enter.

Close the appliance shutoff valve before moving the range. The connector is the part a move damages, and a range walked on its feet drags the connector against the floor and the wall.

No ignition source while a joint is open. No smoking, no torch, no work light with an exposed lamp, and do not operate the range's electric igniter or its oven light while a fitting is loose.

Fit a personal CO monitor before the appliance is fired, and keep it on for every step where a burner runs. Carbon monoxide from a poorly adjusted burner is odorless and the flame can still look acceptable at a glance.

The range is heavy and the floor is the customer's. Two people, hardboard or sliders under the feet, never walked across tile or plank.

The procedure

  1. Confirm fuel type against the appliance rating plate. Read the plate for the gas it is configured for and compare with the supply at the house. Acceptance: plate and supply match, or the correct conversion kit is on hand with its instructions. Wrong looks like an LP house and a natural-gas orifice set, which runs the burner far over-fired. Stop rule: mismatch with no manufacturer kit means do not connect; the appliance stays disconnected and the customer is told why.

  2. Shut off and verify no flow before disconnecting an existing appliance. Close the appliance shutoff, then attempt to light a surface burner. Acceptance: no ignition, no flow. Wrong looks like a burner that still lights, which means the valve is passing. Stop rule: a passing valve is a gas-fitting call; stop, leave the appliance connected and operating if it is safe, and get a licensed fitter.

  3. Inspect the shutoff valve and its accessibility. NFPA 54 requires an accessible appliance shutoff in the same room as the appliance and upstream of the connector; many adopted editions and local amendments add a maximum distance, commonly 6 ft, so confirm the edition your AHJ has adopted. Acceptance: a valve approved for fuel gas, reachable without moving the appliance, closing fully. Wrong looks like a valve buried behind the range or a ball valve of unknown listing. Stop rule: not accessible, not approved or not holding means hand off; do not connect to it.

  4. Install a new listed connector, never a reused one. Use a connector listed to ANSI Z21.24, sized and long enough that it makes a gentle loop without strain, with the fittings supplied with it. Acceptance: one connector only, no splices, not run through a wall, floor, cabinet back or ceiling, and no kink. Wrong looks like two connectors joined to reach, or an old connector reinstalled. Stop rule: if the reach needs more than one connector, the piping has to move and that is a fitter's job.

  5. Seal the right joints and leave the flare seats bare. Apply a pipe joint compound or tape rated for fuel gas to tapered pipe threads only. Acceptance: compound on pipe threads, nothing on any flare seat or on the first thread at the end of a fitting. Wrong looks like dope on a flare, which prevents the metal-to-metal seal and leaves the joint sealing on compound alone. Stop rule: if a flare has been coated, clean it fully before assembly.

  6. Leak check every joint with fluid, at operating pressure. Open the shutoff and apply a leak-detection fluid listed for gas piping to every joint you made or disturbed, including the valve outlet. Acceptance: no bubble growth at any joint over the observation period. Wrong looks like a sniffer used alone, which finds the area but not the joint, or household detergent, which can carry chlorides that attack brass. Stop rule: any bubble means close the valve, break the joint and remake it. Never test with a flame, and never chase a leak with burners lit.

  7. Verify manifold pressure and flame at every burner. Read manifold pressure at the tap with a manometer while a burner runs, and compare against the rating plate. Acceptance: pressure at the plate value for the fuel supplied, and a stable blue flame with a distinct inner cone at every surface burner and at the oven and broil burners. Wrong looks like yellow tipping, lifting, or a lazy rolling flame, which point at orifice, air shutter or supply problems. Stop rule: pressure off the plate value is a regulator or supply issue and is not adjusted by opening burner valves.

  8. Fit the anti-tip bracket and prove it. Install the bracket to the manufacturer's instructions into the floor or the wall structure behind, then engage the range leg or foot in it and test by lifting the front of the range gently. Acceptance: the range resists tipping when the front is lifted and the bracket is engaged. Wrong looks like a bracket screwed to the finish flooring or set in the wrong position so the leg never enters it. Stop rule: a range that cannot be secured is not left in service; tell the customer and document it.

The record this produces

A gas connection record on the ticket. It is the document that answers, years later, whether anyone checked.

  • Appliance: model, serial, fuel type off the rating plate, and whether a conversion kit was installed with its part number.
  • Shutoff: type, accessibility, and whether it held on the step 2 verification.
  • Connector: that a new listed connector was installed, its length and the date. The most useful field on the sheet, because the next tech otherwise cannot know the connector's age.
  • Leak check: the method used, the list of joints checked, and the result at each.
  • Operating: manifold pressure read against the plate value, and the flame condition at each burner.
  • Anti-tip: installed and proved, or the reason it could not be.
  • Handover: what the customer was told, including where the shutoff is.

If a gas incident is ever investigated at that address, the leak-check line and the connector date are the two entries anyone will ask for.

One run of this standard, filled in

Replacement of a failed gas range in a townhouse, natural gas, new appliance delivered by the customer.

  • Step 1: rating plate reads natural gas, house is natural gas. Match. Pass.
  • Step 2: appliance shutoff closed, surface burner attempted on the old range. Burner lights and holds a small flame. Fail: the valve is passing. Stop rule taken. The old range is left connected and shut down at its own controls, nothing is disconnected, and a licensed gas fitter is called.
  • Step 3 onward: not run that visit. The fitter replaced the shutoff the same afternoon and verified it holds, which is the handoff the roles table names.
  • Return visit, step 2 repeated: valve closed, no ignition on a light attempt. Pass.
  • Step 3: new valve is a listed appliance shutoff, reachable from the side without moving the range, closes fully. Pass.
  • Step 4: new connector installed, one only, gentle loop behind the range, no contact with the floor, nothing passing through the cabinet back. Pass.
  • Step 5: compound on the pipe threads at both ends, flare seats clean and bare.
  • Step 6: leak fluid applied to the valve outlet, both connector ends and the appliance inlet. No bubble growth at any of the four over the observation period. Pass.
  • Step 7: manifold pressure at the plate value for natural gas. All four surface burners and both oven burners show a stable blue flame with a clear inner cone, CO monitor quiet through the bake and broil run.
  • Step 8: bracket fitted to the floor structure, rear leg engaged, range resists a front lift. Pass.
  • Handover: customer shown the new shutoff and told it is the one to close.

The job turned on step 2, which takes a minute and which a tech in a hurry skips because the old range is coming out anyway. A passing shutoff on a range being replaced means gas flowing from an open connector onto a floor where somebody is working, and the tech finds out by smell.

When the job cannot run as written

The connector will not reach without strain. Do not add a second connector and do not stretch one. The piping moves, which is a fitter's scope. Leave the appliance disconnected and capped at the shutoff, tell the customer, and book the fitter.

The appliance arrives configured for the wrong fuel and no kit exists. Some models are not convertible. Do not drill or modify an orifice under any circumstances. Return the appliance and document the reason.

A leak is found and the joint is upstream of the shutoff. That is not yours to remake. Close the shutoff if closing it isolates the leak, evacuate and call the utility if it does not, and in either case do not attempt the repair.

No anti-tip bracket can be fitted. A stone floor with no accessible structure, or a rear wall that is not solid. Wall and floor patterns both exist, so try both; if neither works, the range does not stay in service.

The customer wants the old connector reused to save time. Say no, explain that a connector is a single-installation part, and note the conversation. This is the request that arrives most often and it is not negotiable.
