New Icemaker No Ice After 24hr Commissioning Decision Tree
Why this matters
A new refrigerator that has not produced ice after the first day is a near-universal install callback, and the cause is almost always commissioning rather than a defect. The icemaker is shut off, the bail arm is in the up/off position, the water supply saddle valve was never opened, or the freezer simply has not reached harvest temperature yet. Misreading a commissioning gap as a failed icemaker module gets a good part replaced while the closed water valve follows it. Pinning the cause protects the warranty claim and the install margin.
Timing expectations are part of the diagnosis. A standard freezer-mounted icemaker needs the freezer at harvest temperature (commonly below about 15 F, with most reliable harvests near 0 to 5 F) before the mold thermostat closes and triggers ejection, and a new box can take most of a day to pull down that far. The first harvest after install often arrives later than the customer expects, so a 24-hour check that finds an empty bin is not automatically a fault. The job is to prove whether water arrived and whether the freezer got cold enough before condemning anything.

Symptom presentation
No ice in the bin 24 hours after delivery. First, separate two failure shapes: the icemaker never fills with water (water-supply problem), or it fills but never harvests (temperature or module problem). Listen and look for evidence of a fill cycle. A bone-dry mold means no water arrived. A frozen-solid mold that never ejected means it filled but could not harvest, usually because the freezer is not cold enough or the module is stalled.
Quick checks
- Confirm the icemaker is switched ON and the wire bail arm (or the electronic on/off) is in the run position. New units ship with it off or the arm raised.
- Confirm the freezer has reached operating temperature. A new box needs time to pull down; ice production does not start until the freezer is near 0 to 5 F. Give the commissioning period before judging.
- Confirm the water supply is connected and the saddle/shutoff valve is fully open. A self-piercing saddle valve that was installed but never tightened to pierce the line delivers no water.
- Confirm the water filter is installed correctly and seated. A missing or wrong filter, or an unseated one, can block flow on some designs.
- Confirm the supply line was purged. New lines and new filters trap air; the first fills may be partial.
- Confirm the dispenser dispenses water (if equipped). No dispensed water plus no ice points squarely at the supply side.
- Measure the freezer temperature with a probe thermometer, not the door display. A freezer reading in the teens or 20s F explains a non-harvesting icemaker entirely and means more pulldown time, not a part.
- On a module-type icemaker, look for the test/fill points or run the manufacturer's force-harvest if accessible. A clean forced cycle that fills and ejects proves the module and isolates the problem to temperature or water.

Branch A: Mold bone-dry, no fill.
- Icemaker off / bail arm up -> switch on, lower the arm, allow a cycle. Resolved.
- Water saddle/shutoff valve closed or not piercing -> open the valve, confirm the saddle pierced the line, purge air. Resolved.
- Valve open, dispenser also dead -> inlet water valve not energizing or clogged, or a kinked line. Test the dispenser; if it also fails, the fault is the inlet valve or supply, not the icemaker module.
- Valve open, dispenser works, mold still dry -> the icemaker's fill tube or its branch of the inlet valve. Suspect the fill solenoid or a frozen fill tube.
Branch B: Mold filled, ice frozen, never ejected.
- Freezer not yet cold enough -> still in pulldown; allow more time, re-check.
- Freezer cold (near 0 F) but no harvest -> module/motor or mold thermostat/heater stalled. On a new unit this is a warranty part.
Branch C: Partial cubes / hollow cubes.
- Air in line or low flow from a new filter -> purge several dispenses, allow several harvest cycles to clear.
Confirming diagnosis
Drive the fill-versus-harvest split first. Dispense water at the door: a working dispenser narrows a dry mold to the icemaker's own fill branch (fill solenoid, fill tube, or a frozen fill tube), while a dead dispenser proves a supply or inlet-valve problem upstream of the icemaker that affects both paths. Confirm the saddle valve actually pierced and is fully open; a saddle that was installed but never tightened down to pierce the copper or PEX delivers no water at all. Confirm freezer temperature with a thermometer before condemning a non-harvesting module; a box reading above the harvest threshold explains everything and the fix is time, not parts. If you can force a harvest and it fills and ejects cleanly, the module is good and the original no-ice was temperature or a not-yet-triggered first cycle. Document the on/off and bail-arm state, the saddle-valve and piercing state, the dispenser result, the measured freezer temperature, and the forced-harvest result. That package decides commissioning versus warranty part and backs the call either way.
Remediation
- Icemaker off / bail arm up: switch on, lower the arm, allow a cycle.
- Closed or unpierced saddle valve: open and confirm piercing, purge air, re-verify fill. Note that self-piercing saddle valves are disallowed by some local plumbing codes; replace with a proper shutoff where required.
- Unseated or missing filter: seat the correct filter, purge.
- Freezer still pulling down: allow the commissioning period, re-check ice production.
- Confirmed inlet valve, fill solenoid, or module/motor defect on a new unit: warranty part per manufacturer policy after supply and temperature are verified good.
Re-verify by confirming a full harvest cycle drops clear, full cubes into the bin and the dispenser delivers water freely.
