Washer Leaks Only During Spin Decision Tree

Why this matters

A washer that leaks only on the spin cycle is the most narrowly-scoped leak complaint in the trade, and the diagnosis cone collapses fast if you work it correctly. The water is moving at peak velocity (front-load 1,200-1,600 RPM, top-load 700-1,100 RPM) and the highest pressure differentials of the cycle are present. Most techs default to "tub seal" and quote a half-day teardown on what turns out to be a low-cost drain hose. The isolation order below catches the cheap fixes first and reserves the basket pull for when the symptoms genuinely match.

Symptom presentation

Fill cycle dry. Wash cycle dry. Drain cycle dry. The first water appears under the cabinet within 60 seconds of the spin ramp starting, or sometimes only at full spin RPM. Top-load and front-load present differently:

  • Top-load: typically a slow seep visible from the front and a wet rear floor behind the unit. Rarely an outright flood unless the tub-to-pump hose has split.
  • Front-load: water exits from the front lower bezel or rolls down the cabinet sides. A flood at full spin is usually the door boot or sump-to-pump hose.

Confirm before isolating: run a spin-only cycle on a dry pan placed under the unit, with paper towels on the floor to trace the drip path. Mirror under the cabinet helps see the initial source. Do not assume the visible exit point is the leak origin - water tracks along chassis members and lands far from source.

Quick checks (under 15 minutes)

  • Drain hose at the standpipe or laundry tub. A high-velocity discharge can blow back; verify the hose end is secured and the standpipe height is in range. The code dimension is measured above the trap weir, not above the floor, and it is a window with both a floor and a ceiling: UPC and IPC both set the minimum at 18 inches, and each sets a maximum (42 inches under the IPC; confirm the figure in the code your jurisdiction adopted). The washer's own manual then sets its own window on top of that, commonly around 30 to 39 inches. Too short and the tub siphons; too tall and the pump cannot lift against the head, which shows up as exactly this spin-only complaint.
  • Drain hose clamp at the pump outlet. Pump discharge pressure peaks at spin; a loose hose clip drips only at spin.
  • Door boot (front-load) - inspect the lower 180-degree arc for tears, mold, debris caught between boot and basket lip.
  • Detergent overdose. Excess suds collapse during spin and overflow the tub vent or sump path.
  • Level the washer. A 1.5-inch out-of-level on a front-load throws the basket sideways at spin and tears the boot or splashes the door glass.

If any of these resolves the symptom, log the cause and stop. Most washer "leak in spin only" calls die at this step.

Isolation tree

Branch 1 - Drain pump or pump hose (~30% of remaining). Pump runs hard during spin to keep up with extracted water. Cracked pump volute, failed shaft seal, or split discharge hose all leak under pressure. Inspect with the cabinet open during a spin cycle. Drip from underneath the pump body = volute or seal. Spray from the hose path = clamp or hose split.

Branch 2 - Tub-to-pump hose / sump hose (~20%). The large-diameter (1.25-1.5 inch) corrugated hose from the tub sump to the pump inlet. It is hot, wet, and flexed every cycle; ten-year-old units commonly split at the bellows. Inspect by feel along the full length while spinning.

Branch 3 - Door boot / bellows (front-load, ~15%). Lower half of the bellows tears from bra wires, coin abrasion, or detergent rot. A small tear leaks only when the basket throws water against it - i.e. at spin. Roll the boot lip back and inspect 360 degrees.

Branch 4 - Tub seal / outer-tub seal (~10%). Bearing seal at the basket shaft. Leak presents as drip under the rear of the unit, often staining the rear pulley with rust. By the time it leaks visibly the bearing is usually also failing; expect bearing noise on the spin ramp.

Branch 5 - Air dome / pressure switch tube (~10%). Top-load with the pressure switch tube cracked at the sump. Water sloshes during agitation and spin, blows out the cracked tube, drips under the front.

Branch 6 - Tub crack or sump crack (~5%). Plastic outer tub on Whirlpool VMW (vertical modular washer) and similar platforms can crack at the sump weld. Visible drip directly below the tub bottom, dry pump and dry hoses.

Branch 7 - Inlet valve or dispenser flood-back (~5%). A failed inlet valve diaphragm trickles water continuously; the only reason it "presents at spin" is the customer hears the basket and looks. Verify by unplugging the unit mid-cycle and checking for ongoing water entry.

Branch 8 - Above-washer plumbing (~5%). Supply hose burst at the fitting, hose-bibb gland leak, or backflow from a clogged standpipe. Eliminate by closing both supply valves and running a dry spin cycle - if it still leaks, the source is the washer.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Pump: dye-trace blue food coloring into the wash water and spin. Pump-body drip turns blue = pump confirmed.
  • Sump hose: flex the hose with the cabinet open and watch for drip pattern. Replace as a unit with new clamps - reusing OEM spring clamps after one cycle off is acceptable; worm-gear clamps lose grip on the corrugated profile, do not substitute.
  • Door boot: mark the suspected tear with a paint pen and run spin. The mark tells you whether the tear is the source or just one of multiple.
  • Tub seal: pull the rear access panel and look for rust streaks down the basket shaft. Confirmed seal failure usually means bearing kit replacement as a package per the OEM service manual.
  • Pressure tube: disconnect at the switch and blow into it; air should pressurize the sump dome with a gurgle. No back-pressure = cracked tube or air dome.
  • Tub crack: dry the suspected area, dust with talc, run a spin. Wet talc traces the crack path.

Remediation - repair vs replace ROI

Pressure tube Always. Lowest-cost part on the list, 15 minutes. Never.
Cracked outer tub Top-load under 5 years if outer tub is available as a service part. VMW platform 8+ years - tub assembly is the chassis, replacement is uneconomic.
Inlet valve Always. Low-cost part, 20-30 minutes. Never.

Cutoff guidance: on a 10+ year mid-tier front-load presenting tub-seal failure, run the math out loud with the customer. A bearing kit plus 4 hours labor lands at a large fraction of a new builder-grade front-load, and it buys no warranty on the adjacent components that are the same age. The new machine carries a full manufacturer warranty. Replacement wins on most calls; document the recommendation and move on.
