Drying and Air Mover Placement Standard
Purpose
Every wet clean puts water into a floor the customer walks on, puts furniture back on, and judges the work by. This standard fixes how much air movement goes down, where it points, what reading releases the job, and who reads that number. Without it, dry time is whatever fans happened to be in the van, and the shop absorbs the three complaints that follow: wicking, which is dissolved soil carried back to the pile tip as water evaporates upward through the yarn; a musty pad in a room whose door got closed behind the tech; and a rust ring where a sofa leg went down on damp nylon. All three are drying failures reported as cleaning failures, which is why callback data never points at the fans.
Scope
Covers drying after hot water extraction, rotary shampoo or any other wet method on residential and light commercial carpet, from the last extraction pass through the reading that releases the job.
It does not cover a water loss. A category 1, 2 or 3 intrusion is dried at restoration density under ANSI/IICRC S500 in the edition your shop's restoration training was written against, with dehumidification sized to the affected volume, and that belongs to the water damage restoration SOP on this shelf. It does not cover the extraction pass, the method decision, or in-plant rug drying rooms.

Procedure
1. Fix the drying plan before the wand starts. Walk the area with the customer, count rooms and closed spaces, and write the mover count before solution goes down. Shop default is one mover per cleaned room or hall segment with the door open, near one unit per 120 to 200 sq ft of residential cut pile; tune it to your own callback rate rather than treating it as physics. Acceptance: a written mover count and target release time on the ticket before extraction begins. Wrong looks like the count getting decided at the end from what is left in the van. Stop rule: if the van holds fewer movers than the plan needs, reduce the cleaned area to what you can dry today or reschedule the rest. Hazard is the walk itself, so keep the customer clear of areas where hose is about to run, and walk a staged hose route yourself first.
2. Set the room before setting a fan. Air movers move air, they do not remove water from air. Close exterior openings if the outdoor dew point is at or above the indoor dew point, and run the building's own cooling if it has it, because a running air conditioner is the dehumidifier already installed in the house. Above about 60 percent indoor relative humidity with no mechanical dehumidification, add a portable dehumidifier or you are recirculating the same wet air. Acceptance: indoor RH logged at start plus the HVAC mode you left the system in. Wrong looks like windows open on a humid day because it feels like ventilation. Stop rule: if RH holds above 60 percent an hour in, add dehumidification or extend the plan and tell the customer now. Hazard: none to the tech here, but any thermostat setting you change gets logged and set back at step 8.
3. Take the baseline in uncleaned carpet of the same construction. Carpet moisture meters read a relative scale, not percent moisture content of nylon, so an absolute number means nothing alone. Take three readings in uncleaned carpet in the same room, usually a closet floor or under a bed, and average them. Acceptance: a written baseline value, the meter mode used (pinless or pin), and the location. Wrong looks like a baseline off a different carpet in a different room, which is a different construction and a different reading. Stop rule: if no uncleaned area of that carpet exists, release on time plus feel instead and write on the ticket that you did. Hazard: kneeling and reaching under furniture, so check for tack strip at the closet threshold before putting a hand down, and if you catch a hand on a strip, stop and dress it before continuing.
4. Count circuits, not fans. A centrifugal air mover draws roughly 2 to 4 amps on high and its nameplate carries the real figure. A 15 amp branch circuit carries 12 amps continuously, so three units is comfortable and four is at the edge before anything the customer has plugged in. Trace shared breakers by feeding one unit at a time. Acceptance: total nameplate amps at or below 12 amps per 15 amp breaker, and every unit running two minutes with the breaker holding. Wrong looks like daisy-chaining everything off one bedroom receptacle because the cords reach. Stop rule: on a trip, unplug that circuit, reset the breaker once, redistribute to a second circuit and re-verify; a second trip takes that circuit out of service for the job and the customer is told. Hazard: this is water plus electricity, so use a GFCI-protected receptacle or a portable GFCI, keep cord bodies and connections off damp carpet, and never exceed the daisy-chain limit printed on the unit's own label. Ground-fault protection for portable equipment is required at 29 CFR 1926.404(b)(1) on construction work; a residential clean is not construction, and the same device is still what keeps a wet cord from putting current through the tech.
5. Place movers to peel air along the surface, not into it. Set each unit against a wall with the snout angled along that wall rather than out into the room, so the airflow sheet peels around the perimeter and sets up one rotation per room. Point with the pile lay where you can see it. Acceptance: moving air felt at the far corner from the unit, and no unit aimed straight down into a wet spot. Wrong looks like fans facing each other from opposite walls, which cancels the rotation and leaves the room center wet. Stop rule: if furniture blocks every wall run, move the furniture or put the longer dry time in writing rather than aiming across the middle. Hazard: cords now cross the customer's walking route, so tape or tuck every doorway run and tell everyone in the house where they are; if an occupant uses a cane, walker or wheelchair, reroute so no cord crosses their path at all.
6. Barrier anything going back down before release. Furniture returning to damp carpet gets a barrier at every contact point, plastic tabs under light legs and blocks under anything heavy or with a metal or finished-wood foot. Acceptance: every leg on a barrier, counted out loud against the piece's leg count. Wrong looks like three tabs under a four-leg table. Stop rule: out of barriers means the piece stays off the carpet until release, written on the ticket rather than agreed verbally. Hazard: lifting and pivoting furniture, so keep the load close, take a second person for anything you cannot control one-handed at knee height, and set a shifting piece down rather than catching it.
7. Read at the interval, against the baseline. At the planned release time take three readings in the worst-case area, meaning the heaviest traffic lane or the most heavily presprayed section, in the same meter mode as the baseline. The gate is per reading, not on the average: each of the three must sit within 5 points of the baseline on that relative scale. Wrong looks like averaging a passing reading with a failing one and calling it dry. Stop rule: any single reading outside the gate means the job does not release, the movers stay running, the office books a return read, and the customer is told on that same call that furniture stays off. Hazard: none beyond the cords already run, and re-walk them before kneeling because other people in the house have moved them.
8. Retrieve, restore, and close what you opened. On release, pull every mover and cord, remove every barrier you placed, reset the thermostat to the setting logged at step 2, and confirm any breaker you reset at step 4 is on with the customer's own loads running. Acceptance: movers out equals movers in, barriers out equals barriers placed, thermostat matches the log, and each reset circuit is live at a receptacle you test. Wrong looks like a tab found under a sofa leg a week later, or a freezer circuit left off. Stop rule: an unaccounted barrier means you walk the piece and find it before leaving; a circuit that will not hold under the customer's loads is now an electrician's problem, said plainly on the ticket rather than reset again. Hazard: unplug at the plug body, never by the cord, and coil cords off the floor before moving units.
The record this produces
Six fields land on the ticket and the office reads them when the customer calls back: cleaned area with room list; mover count and circuits used; indoor RH at start with the HVAC mode left in place; baseline value with meter mode and location; each release reading with its clock time; and the release decision with the name of whoever made it. When wicking gets reported three days out, the difference between a warranty argument and a five-minute answer is whether the ticket shows a baseline and a release read at a stated hour, or shows nothing.
Worked pass
A 620 sq ft clean in a single-story house: master bedroom 180 sq ft, second bedroom 130, living room 240, hall segment 70, cut-pile nylon throughout. Four areas, so four movers at step 1, release targeted at 8 hours from the last pass. Step 2 logs indoor RH at 64 percent with the heat pump off in shoulder weather, so a portable dehumidifier goes in. Step 3 takes three pinless readings in the master closet: 11, 12 and 13, giving a baseline of 12.
Step 4 fails. The helper chained all four movers plus the dehumidifier off one bedroom receptacle. Nameplates read 2.9 amps per mover and 3.5 amps for the dehumidifier, so four movers is 4 times 2.9, which is 11.6 amps, and 11.6 plus 3.5 leaves 15.1 amps on a 15 amp breaker. It tripped inside a minute. The stop rule runs: circuit unplugged, breaker reset once, two movers moved to a living room receptacle proven to be on a different breaker. Recount: the bedroom circuit now carries 2 times 2.9 plus 3.5, which is 9.3 amps, and the living room circuit carries 2 times 2.9, which is 5.8 amps. Both sit under the 12 amp figure the step names, and both held two minutes.
Step 7 at hour 8 reads 24, 22 and 26 in the living room traffic lane. The gate is each reading within 5 points of the baseline of 12, so the ceiling is 17. Twenty-four minus twelve leaves 12 over, twenty-two leaves 10, twenty-six leaves 14. Three of three fail, the job does not release, and the office books the return read for that evening.
The return read at hour 14 gives 15, 14 and 16. Fifteen minus twelve leaves 3, fourteen leaves 2, sixteen leaves 4, so all three clear the 5 point gate and the job releases. Step 8 pulls four movers, one dehumidifier and eleven barriers against eleven placed, resets the thermostat to the logged off position, and confirms the bedroom circuit live at a receptacle with the customer's lamp.
Averaging those hour-8 readings gives 24, which still fails, but a run pairing a 12 with a 22 averages to 17, exactly the ceiling, and releases a floor with one lane sitting 10 points over baseline. That is why the gate is per reading, and why the mover count is fixed at step 1: a plan built on four movers survives being split across two circuits, while a plan built on whatever reached one receptacle does not.
