Hose Run and Door Protection Standard
Purpose
Almost nothing in a carpet cleaning shop's claims file comes from the wand. It comes from the hose run: a burnished door casing, a chipped stair nose, a cat out the propped front door, a homeowner catching a toe on a 2 inch vacuum line in a dim hallway. The solution line makes it more than a trip hazard, because it carries water near 230 degrees F at a few hundred psi through a doorway a child walks through.
This standard makes the route a decision taken before the first hose leaves the reel, gives every protective item a count so the same count comes back off the job, and puts a hazard clause on the two steps that usually arrive bare: the one that pressurizes the run and the one that tears it down while everybody is tired.
Scope
Covers deploying, protecting, monitoring and breaking down truck mount vacuum and solution hose from the van to the work area in an occupied residential or small commercial building: entry doors, interior doorways, corners, stairs and walkways.
Does not cover: hose length versus airflow sizing (the truck mount CFM reference); the pressurization sequence at the machine (the startup SOP); documenting damage that was already there on arrival (the pre-existing condition documentation SOP, which step 1 hands off to); and portables carried inside a building (the high-rise setup SOP).

Procedure
Walk the route before any hose comes off the reel. Pick the shortest path with the fewest doorways and direction changes, and photograph any trim or floor damage already on that path under the pre-existing condition SOP. Accept: doorway count and direction-change count written on the ticket, total run inside the machine's rated hose length. Wrong: picking the closest door rather than the shortest run, then adding two more 25 ft sections inside. Stop rule: if no route stays inside rated hose length, the job runs on a portable or reschedules, because vacuum lost to extra hose shows up as wet carpet, not as a shorter day. Hazard: none at this step; it is a decision made in a driveway with nothing running.
Secure pets and brief the household on the open door. Pets go behind a closed door with a note on it, and every adult present is told which door is held open and for how long. Accept: pets confirmed contained by the customer, who repeats back which door stays open. Wrong: taking "he never runs out" as containment. Stop rule: if a pet cannot be contained and the customer will not hold it, the entry gets a temporary screen or the job does not start - a lost cat ends a residential account permanently. Hazard: a propped exterior door is an escape path for a toddler as well as a cat, so a household with an unsupervised small child gets a second adult on the door or a closed inner door behind the run.
Protect the entry door, jambs and threshold before the hose touches them. Jamb guard on both sides the hose can bear on, threshold ramp or folded pad over the sill, door held by a wedge or strap. Accept: two jamb guards seated, sill covered, door held by a positive stop rather than by the hose. Wrong: letting a self-closing storm door rest on the hose, which crushes the vacuum line and abrades the solution jacket. Stop rule: a door that will not hold on a wedge gets its closer arm disconnected with the customer's permission and reconnected at breakdown, or the run moves. Hazard: a spring-loaded storm door that lets go swings hard into a shin or a hand at the jamb, so the wedge goes in before the hand does.
Run the vacuum hose in first, then lay the solution line on top of it. Keep the solution line out of every pinch point. Accept: at each doorway the solution line lies over the vacuum hose, not under it, and no bend is tighter than the manufacturer's minimum for that hose. Wrong: a solution line pinched under a 2 inch vacuum hose in a door reveal, which is where a jacket wears through and lets go at pressure. Stop rule: any kink or flat spot takes that section out of service for the day - van floor, not back on the reel. Hazard: a loaded 2 inch vacuum hose dragged over a foot bruises, so the second tech pulls, the first guides, and nobody walks backwards over their own hose.
Guard every direction change where the hose bears on trim. A corner guard or folded pad at each inside corner, newel post and cased opening the run touches. Accept: a guard at every direction change counted in step 1, so guards deployed equals doorways plus direction changes. Wrong: guarding the entry and skipping the hallway corner, which carries the highest drag load because the hose pulls around an angle under tension. Stop rule: run out of guards and you shorten the route rather than leave a corner bare. Hazard: none beyond ordinary bending; work kneeling rather than reaching around a blind corner.
Run stairs straight, never diagonally, with a second person on the hose. Anchor at the top landing, run down the center of the tread line, pad the top nose. Accept: hose centered, secured at the top so a pull from below cannot drag it sideways, pad in place. Wrong: a hose laid across treads at an angle, which turns a stair into a rolling trip line and shears the nosing finish. Stop rule: stair as the only route with no second tech means the hose is fixed in place and nobody carries anything on that stair until it comes out. Hazard: the highest-consequence step here - a fall on stairs with both hands on a hose has no arrest, so the tech descends facing forward with one hand free and the hose feeds from above.
Control the trip hazard in every space the household still uses. A hose crossing a walkway is ramped, taped down, or the walkway is closed and an alternate path shown to the customer face to face. Accept: no uncovered hose across any path the household uses, and the customer has walked the alternate path once. Wrong: a hose across a hall doorway in a house where an older adult uses that bathroom during the job. Stop rule: if the only path to a bathroom crosses the run, pause and lift the hose when they need to pass rather than asking them to step over it. Hazard: a trip over a hose in a customer's own home is the injury this trade actually produces, and the person who falls is usually the occupant.
Couple, pressurize and walk the full run before the first wand pass. Bring pressure up at the machine under the startup SOP with the wand triggered into the waste tank, then walk the run with the trigger closed and both hands free. Accept: every coupler dry after 60 seconds at working pressure, no warm spot on the jacket away from a coupler, no guard moved. Wrong: a weeping coupler dismissed as a drip; at working temperature that is 200-plus degree F water finding a way out. Stop rule: any weep drops pressure at the machine before the coupler is touched, and it opens only once the gauge reads zero. Hazard: the run now holds scalding water under pressure with the family on the other side of it, so nobody kneels over a coupler during the ramp and the walk is made from the side of the hose, not straddling it.
Re-inspect the run at each tank change. Walk the same route, checking every guard, crossing and coupler. Accept: guards seated, no new burnish or dent on trim, couplers dry, no new hose across a walkway that was clear at step 7. Wrong: a corner guard slid two inches, leaving the hose bearing on casing, which polishes a shine into the finish in under an hour of dragging. Stop rule: stop dragging that section, photograph the trim, reseat the guard, and tell the customer yourself before you leave - a mark you disclose is a conversation, a mark they find is a claim. Hazard: the route is wet, and the shoe covers protecting their carpet make hard floor slick, so step short on tile and hardwood.
Break down in reverse and restore every opening you disturbed. Kill pressure, bleed the solution line, pull the solution hose, then the vacuum hose, then collect protection. Accept: protectors recovered equals protectors deployed in steps 3 and 5, storm door closer reconnected if step 3 disconnected it, exterior door closed and latched, pets released only after that latch is confirmed. Wrong: coiling the reel with a jamb guard still standing in the doorway, which is how a shop loses half its guards in a season and then stops using them. Stop rule: a count that does not match sends the tech back through the route before the van moves. Hazard: the solution line holds pressure after the pump stops, so it is bled at the wand into the waste tank before any coupler is broken, and it stays hot enough to burn a forearm for several minutes after that.
The record this produces
The ticket carries: route description, doorway count, direction-change count, protector count out and back, pets contained yes or no and by whom, alternate path shown yes or no, pressurized walk result, trim and floor conditions photographed at step 1, and anything found at step 9 with photos.
Those photos are the point of the record. A claim usually arrives days later as "there is a mark on our door frame," and the only thing that settles it either way is a timestamped image from before the hose came in. The protector count is the other half: a shop that cannot show its guards went out and came back cannot argue the run was protected at all.
Worked pass, with a step that failed
Two story residential, front entry, one interior doorway, two direction changes (hallway corner, newel post at the stair). Step 1 counted 2 doorways and 2 direction changes, run measured at 125 ft: two 25 ft sections outside and three inside, against a machine rated to 200 ft. Photos taken of an existing chip on the stair nose.
Step 3 set 2 jamb guards at the entry. Step 5 set 2 corner guards at the direction changes, so 4 protectors went out. The interior doorway was a cased opening with no door and the hose passed through its center without bearing on either side, so it needed no guard and that exception went on the ticket rather than being left to look like a miss. Step 6 ran the hose straight down the stair with the second tech feeding from the landing. Step 7 closed the hallway and walked the customer through the kitchen.
Step 9 failed at the second tank change. The hallway corner guard had slid about 2 inches and the vacuum hose was bearing directly on the casing, with a visible burnish along roughly 4 inches of the painted edge. The acceptance requires guards seated and no new mark; both halves failed.
The stop rule ran as written: dragging on that section stopped, the casing was photographed, the guard was reseated with a pad behind it, and the tech told the customer at the end of the job with both photos on the tablet, before the invoice. That is a five minute conversation. The same mark found two days later is a claim against a shop with no photograph of the casing from before the hose came in.
Breakdown recovered 4 protectors against 4 deployed, the storm door closer had not been disconnected so nothing needed reconnecting, the front door was latched, and the cat came out of the back bedroom after the latch was confirmed.
