Pre-Spray Chemistry - Acid, Alkaline, and Neutral Selection
Why this matters
Pre-spray is the cleaning step that does most of the work; the extractor is the rinse. A correctly chosen pre-spray, applied at the correct dilution, with adequate dwell time, removes 80-90 percent of the soil load before the wand touches the carpet. Selecting the wrong pH for the soil type or the fiber type damages the carpet or produces a marginal cleaning result that the customer notices. This reference covers the chemistry classification and the matching procedure.
The pH scale and pre-spray classifications
pH measures hydrogen-ion concentration on a 0-14 scale:

When to choose alkaline
Alkaline pre-sprays are the workhorse for synthetic carpets and most residential / commercial soil loads:

Use on:

- Polyester and triexta - wide pH tolerance
- Olefin - tolerates alkaline well
- Most commercial cut-pile and loop carpets
Avoid on:
- Wool (alkaline above pH 8.5 yellows and damages wool fibers)
- Silk (any alkaline)
- Older natural-fiber carpets
When to choose neutral
Neutral pre-sprays are for fiber-sensitive carpets where you want cleaning power without chemical aggression:

Neutral pre-sprays rely more on:
- Heat (180 °F+ at the wand)
- Agitation
- Dwell time
- Higher-quality surfactants that work at neutral pH

When to choose acid
Acid pre-sprays are specialty:

The mild acid post-rinse is becoming standard practice across the industry as a way to leave the carpet at neutral pH and avoid the "yellowing over time" complaints that came from alkaline residue.
Concentration and dilution
Pre-sprays are sold as concentrate. Dilution ratios vary by product but typically run 1:8 to 1:32 (one part concentrate to 8-32 parts water). Reading the label and matching the dilution to the soil load is essential:
- Light soil (residential, recent cleaning): higher dilution (1:16 to 1:32)
- Moderate soil (typical residential): manufacturer's standard (1:16 typical)
- Heavy soil (commercial, neglected carpets): standard or higher concentration (1:8 to 1:16)
- Very heavy soil (restoration, post-construction): full strength or near-full
Over-concentration:
- Wastes product
- Leaves residue that wicks back over hours and re-soils
- May exceed the carpet's pH tolerance
Under-concentration:
- Wastes labor (multiple cycles)
- Customer perceives marginal cleaning result
- Doesn't address the soil load
Surfactant types
Pre-sprays contain surfactants - the molecules that lift soil from the fiber. Different surfactant types:
- Anionic (negatively charged): most common in pre-sprays. Effective on a wide range of soils
- Cationic (positively charged): less common in pre-sprays; common in spotters and softeners
- Nonionic: low-foaming, good for high-extraction systems
- Amphoteric: works with both anionic and cationic; rare in pre-sprays
Mixing anionic and cationic in the same application neutralizes both and produces no cleaning. Read labels before mixing chemicals on the same job.
Dwell time
Pre-spray needs dwell time to work:

Dwell time is the single most underutilized variable in residential cleaning. Crews under time pressure spray and immediately extract; the result is mediocre. Tell the customer up-front: "I'm going to pre-spray, then move equipment in/out, then come back to that area" - this builds the dwell time into the workflow.
Application equipment
Pre-spray application devices:
- Pump-up sprayer: 2-3 gallon hand-pump, most common. Cheap, reliable, requires manual pumping
- Electric sprayer: powered backpack or wheeled unit. Faster on large jobs, requires power
- In-line injection (truck-mount system): pre-spray applied through the wand. Reduces equipment carrying but mixes pre-spray with rinse water in some systems
- Hydroforce injector: chemical injection at the hose connection. Allows precise mixing and switching between products mid-job
The pump-up sprayer is the universal tool. Every truck has one; every crew knows how to operate one. For larger jobs, electric speeds the application.

Procedure - typical residential pre-spray
- Identify the fiber before you pick the jug. Check the tag, the installer paperwork, or run a fiber test. Wool and silk route to neutral or mild acid. Everything else in a normal residential house takes the mild alkaline.
- Dry-soil removal first. Vacuum the full area properly, slow passes, both directions in traffic lanes. Pre-spray applied over unvacuumed carpet turns loose particulate into a slurry that the wand then drives into the backing.
- Pre-test. Working dilution on an inconspicuous area, one minute, then press a white towel. Dye transfer means stop and drop to a gentler chemistry.
- Mix at the label ratio. Warm water dissolves concentrate better than cold. Use a clean sprayer, and never mix two products in one tank. Match the ratio to the soil you actually see, not to the ratio you used at the last house.
- Plan the application area. Spray only what you can extract inside the dwell window. A whole floor sprayed at once is a floor that dries out before the wand reaches it.
- Apply in overlapping passes, fan tip, working from the far corner back toward your equipment so you are never walking across wet pile. Wet the pile evenly to the base. Do not flood the backing. Traffic lanes, entry areas, and around the recliner get a second pass.
- Agitate. A groomer or counter-rotating brush drives the chemistry to the base of the pile and stands the yarn up. On loop and on heavy soil this is not optional; it is the difference between a good result and an average one.
- Dwell to the soil load, five minutes light through twenty or more on heavy commercial-style soil. Watch that it does not flash off in a hot dry house. If it starts to dry, mist it again rather than extracting a dried film.
- Extract with the correct rinse. On synthetics and on wool, finish with a mild acid rinse so the carpet is left at or near neutral and no alkaline residue is left to attract soil.
- Verify and finish. Strip-test the pH in a couple of spots, groom the pile in one direction, set air movers, and set corner blocks or tabs under any metal furniture feet before the furniture goes back.
- Write it down. Product, dilution, dwell, and rinse on the ticket. When the customer or the carpet manufacturer asks later what was used, that line is the answer.
Two things to protect while you work: keep pre-spray off hard-surface thresholds and wood trim (slick underfoot and it can dull a finish), and keep overspray off baseboards and walls.
