Protector Application and Verification

Purpose

Protector is the add-on most often sold and least often verified. It is applied at the end of a long day, at whatever rate the tank happened to hold, on a floor nobody comes back to test, and the customer is told the carpet is now protected. When a spill soaks in two weeks later, the shop has no way to show anything was applied correctly and the customer has a reason to distrust the whole invoice. This standard fixes the rate, where the rate comes from, how the batch is reconciled against the area, and the test that proves the treatment took before anyone says it worked.

Scope

Covers topical protector application to residential and light commercial carpet immediately after cleaning, plus the verification and the record.

It does not cover upholstery or rug protector, which have their own fiber and dye considerations, and it does not cover choosing between protector chemistries; the product your shop stocks is a purchasing decision, and what you may apply is set by that product's label and your state's law in the year you apply it. It does not cover the cleaning and rinse that precede it, which belong to the extraction SOP on this shelf.

Procedure

1. Qualify the fiber and the product before quoting it. Confirm the fiber and confirm the product label covers it; wool and other protein fibers are not automatically included, and applying a product outside its labeled use is a violation, not a judgment call. Acceptance: fiber identified and the label's approved fiber list checked, both noted. Wrong looks like assuming one drum covers everything in the van. Stop rule: fiber not on the label means no application and no charge, and you say why. Hazard: none, this is reading a label at the truck.

2. Rinse first and confirm the surface will take it. Protector applied over detergent residue bonds to the residue rather than the fiber. Complete the rinse pass and check the pile for tack with the back of a gloved hand. Acceptance: no tack anywhere in the treatment area and the pile reading damp, not wet, in whatever state the label calls for. Wrong looks like spraying protector onto a floor that was never rinsed. Stop rule: any tack means another rinse pass before protector, or the protector is deferred to a return visit. Hazard: the rinse is hot solution under pressure at the wand, so keep hands clear of the jets and never chase a hose leak with a hand, since a pinhole at that pressure injects rather than sprays and an injection injury needs an emergency department the same hour even where the skin looks unmarked.

3. Measure the area and compute the batch from the label in your hand. Take the treatment area from your own measurement, not the room count, then read the label's coverage figure and dilution and compute the ready-to-use volume you need. Acceptance: area in sq ft, the label's stated coverage and dilution written down as read, and the resulting concentrate and water volumes. Wrong looks like mixing a tank by habit, because coverage and dilution differ between products and between generations of the same product. Stop rule: if the label on the container does not match the label your batch sheet was built from, the container's label governs and you recompute. Hazard: none at this step, it is arithmetic done at the truck.

4. Prepare the room, then mix. Clear people, pets and anything the label says to keep clear, open the space for ventilation, mask or cover hard-floor surfaces at every transition, and only then mix. Acceptance: room empty of occupants and animals, ventilation established, transitions covered, batch mixed to the computed volumes. Wrong looks like mixing first and clearing after, with a loaded tank standing in a room where a child is walking. Stop rule: if the space cannot be ventilated or cannot be cleared of occupants, the application does not happen today. Hazard: this product is about to become an airborne mist, which is the route that matters and the one a glove does nothing for; aerosolized protector products have a documented history of respiratory injury, so where the label names respiratory protection that PPE is a condition of use, meaning nobody applies it without a respirator under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134, and if nobody on site has one the job is rescheduled rather than run bare. Wear the eye and skin protection the label names for splash during mixing, and relieve the pressure in a pump-up sprayer before opening it.

5. Apply in two crossed passes and reconcile the tank. Use a coarse fan tip at low pressure rather than a fine mist, and lay the product in two passes at right angles so coverage is even. When the passes are done, measure what is left in the tank and subtract it from what you mixed. Acceptance: applied volume within the label's coverage rate for the measured area, shown as a subtraction on the ticket. Wrong looks like judging coverage by how wet the carpet looks, which under-applies almost every time. Stop rule: if the applied volume works out to a coverage rate thinner than the label's, you put the balance down in a third pass rather than calling it complete, and if it works out heavier than the label's you stop applying and note the over-application, because excess protector leaves a residue that resoils faster than untreated carpet. Hazard: overspray onto an adjacent hard floor makes it slick immediately, so wipe any overspray as it happens rather than at the end, and keep everyone off that surface until it is wiped and dry.

6. Groom it in. Rake the treated area so the product moves down the yarn instead of sitting on the tips, in the same crossed pattern you sprayed. Acceptance: pile stood up uniformly across the whole area with no visible wet lines or dry gaps. Wrong looks like grooming only the traffic lane, which leaves protector on the tips everywhere else, where it wears off first. Stop rule: visible dry gaps get sprayed and groomed before you move on, not noted for later. Hazard: raking raises mist and dust from a freshly sprayed floor, so the same respiratory protection and ventilation from step 4 stay in place until you leave the room, and the space stays vacated for the re-entry period the label states.

7. Dry it, then test against an untreated control. Dry the area per the drying standard, then place a drop of clean water on a treated spot and on an untreated area of the same carpet, and watch both. Acceptance: on the treated spot the drop stands as a bead and can be blotted up leaving no darkening; on the control it wets in. Wrong looks like testing while the carpet is still damp, which tells you nothing, or testing without a control, which leaves you comparing against memory. Stop rule: if the treated drop wets in, the treatment did not take; do not tell the customer the floor is protected. Determine whether it is under-application from step 5 or residue from step 2, correct that cause, and if a second test fails, the protector comes off the invoice and the owner is told. Hazard: kneeling at pile level on a floor with cords run, so re-walk the cord runs before you kneel.

8. Set the expectation in writing and record the batch. Tell the customer, and write, what protector does: it buys time on a spill so it can be blotted before it penetrates, and it does not make carpet stain-proof or remove the need to blot promptly. State the label's re-entry time and how long the treatment is expected to last under their traffic. Acceptance: the written statement handed over, the label's re-entry time stated, and the customer's acknowledgment recorded. Wrong looks like the word "stain-proof" being used by anyone in the shop. Stop rule: if the customer repeats it back as stain-proofing, correct it on the spot and note that you did. Hazard: none at this step.

The record this produces

Fiber identified and checked against the label's approved list; measured area in sq ft; the product name and the label's stated coverage and dilution as read from the container; concentrate and water volumes mixed; volume left in the tank and the applied volume as a subtraction; the resulting coverage rate; the bead test result on treated and control; and the written statement given with the customer's acknowledgment. That set is what answers a claim two weeks later, and the tank subtraction is the only field in it that cannot be reconstructed afterwards.

Worked pass

A 600 sq ft treatment across a living room and hall, cut-pile nylon, protector approved for nylon on the label of the container in the van.

Step 3 reads that label: 1 gallon of ready-to-use solution per 200 sq ft, mixed 1 part concentrate to 4 parts water. Six hundred sq ft at 200 sq ft per gallon is 3.0 gallons ready-to-use. At 1 part in 5 total, that is 3.0 divided by 5, which is 0.6 gallons of concentrate, plus 2.4 gallons of water, and 0.6 plus 2.4 checks back to 3.0.

Step 4 clears two occupants and a cat to the far end of the house, opens two windows on the leeward side, masks the tile at the kitchen doorway, and the tech applies under the respirator the label names.

Step 5 fails. Two crossed passes go down and look even, but the tank measures 1.1 gallons remaining. Three point zero minus one point one leaves 1.9 gallons applied. Six hundred sq ft divided by 1.9 gallons is about 316 sq ft per gallon, against a label rate of 200, so the floor carries roughly six tenths of the product it was supposed to. The stop rule runs: the balance goes down in a third pass rather than the job being called complete. Applying the remaining 1.1 gallons brings the total to 3.0 gallons over 600 sq ft, which is 200 sq ft per gallon and exactly the label rate.

Step 6 rakes the full area in both spray directions. Step 7 dries to the drying standard's gate, then places a drop on the living room field and a drop in an untreated closet of the same carpet. The field drop stands and blots away clean; the closet drop wets in and darkens the pile. Treated and control behave differently, so the treatment took.

Step 8 hands over the written statement, states the label's re-entry time, and the customer repeats back that spills need blotting promptly, which is the acceptance.

The tank subtraction is the whole article. Both passes looked right, the carpet looked evenly damp, and without measuring what came out of the tank the shop would have invoiced a full protector application at six tenths of the labeled rate and had no way to know until a spill failed to bead.
