Stair and Landing Cleaning Standard
Purpose
A flight of stairs is a fall path that happens to be carpeted. Everything that makes stairs hard to clean makes them dangerous to clean: you work above your own feet, the hose wants to pull you downhill, water runs to the nose of every tread and pools on the landing, and the person most likely to get hurt is the customer who walks down in socks two hours after you leave.
This procedure puts the traffic control and the hose route in before the first tread is touched, cleans per tread with moisture held down, and releases the flight only when the treads and the landing have been measured dry.
Scope
Covers interior residential and small-commercial carpeted stairs, landings, and the transition strip at the top and bottom of a flight, including runner-over-hardwood installations.
Does not cover the whole-floor extraction the flight connects, which is the extraction SOP and sets the chemistry and limits this procedure inherits. Does not cover exterior steps, open-riser or spiral stairs with no continuous tread surface, or any flight with a structural defect, which stops at step 3 and goes back to the customer.

Procedure
Plan the route and the closure before anything gets wet. Ask which other stairs or exits exist, agree who needs to move between floors during the visit, and set a closure window. Acceptance: either a usable second route is identified, or the household has agreed in words to stay off the flight for a stated period, recorded on the ticket. Wrong looks like a customer discovering mid-job that they cannot get to a bathroom; if the flight is the only route between floors, it is worked in halves so one side stays walkable, and if it is the only means of egress from the upper floor, nothing is ever left lying across it, not a hose, not a cord, not a tool. Hazard: a barricade that traps someone upstairs is worse than the wet carpet, so barricades warn and never block, and the household is told in person rather than by a sign.
Run the hose and cords so they never cross a tread path. Bring the hose up one side, secure it at the top newel or another fixed point, and keep the slack coiled at the top rather than draped down the flight. Acceptance: no hose or cord across a walking line, and the hose secured so a pull from below cannot drag it down the stairs. Wrong looks like a loop of hose over the third tread; if it cannot be secured at the top, set up from the bottom and pull hose only as far as the tread you are on. Hazard: a hose that shifts under a knee pitches you head-first downhill, so it is tied off before you climb, and nobody moves the machine, changes a tool or pulls slack while another tech is on the flight.
Inspect for defects and stop if you find one. Walk the flight and check the handrail for movement, the nosings for looseness, the carpet for delamination or a lifted edge, and any stair rods for security. Acceptance: handrail solid under a firm sideways push, no tread that moves, no loose edge, all rods seated. Wrong looks like cleaning a flight with a rail that shifts an inch, which is the exact condition in which a wet tread becomes an injury; if any of those fail, the flight is not cleaned today, the defect is photographed, and the customer is told to have it secured, because a customer's stairs are not a workplace you control and the fix is theirs, not yours. Hazard: the inspection itself happens with a hand on the rail and one foot on a lower tread rather than standing tall on a middle tread, and the rail push test is made from beside the rail, not from above it.
Dry soil removal per tread, top down. Vacuum each tread and riser with a crevice or upholstery tool, working the tread-to-riser junction and both ends where soil packs against the skirt board. Acceptance: no visible grit lifts onto a white towel dragged along a vacuumed tread nose. Wrong looks like a quick pass over the middle of each tread, leaving the loaded edges; the middle is often the cleanest part of the flight, so a towel clean from the middle and dirty from the end means you vacuumed the wrong third. Hazard: dragging a vacuum up behind you puts a hard object on the treads above your heels, so the machine sits at the top or bottom and only the hose travels, and the bag change happens outdoors.
Pre-spray per tread at reduced volume, and let dwell do the work. Stairs carry more soil per square foot than the floors they connect and tolerate less water, because everything you put on a tread runs to its nose and then to the landing. Acceptance: each tread uniformly damp with no runoff visible at the nose and no darkening on the riser below it. Wrong looks like solution running down three treads to pool at the landing; if you see runoff, you are over-applying, so cut the volume rather than trying to extract it back, and where a lane needs more chemistry, extend the dwell instead of adding volume. Hazard: overspray onto a hard-surface landing or a wood nosing makes the most slippery surface in the house at the bottom of a flight, so mask the landing edge, and wipe any overspray as it happens rather than at the end.
Extract with a hand tool, one tread at a time, working down. A stair tool or upholstery tool only; the floor wand does not go on stairs, because it cannot seal on a tread and it will pull you forward. Two wet passes and then dry passes with the trigger off, with extra dry strokes at the nose where gravity has taken the water. Acceptance: the nose of each tread feels no wetter than its middle to the back of a gloved hand before you move down. Wrong looks like a saturated nose on every tread, which is where a foot lands and where the customer's sock gets wet; if a tread needs more than two dry passes, stop and call it to the lead, because it means the pre-spray volume upstream is wrong and the rest of the flight will repeat it. Hazard: work facing up the flight with your weight low, tool below you, and never back down the stairs with the tool in one hand and the hose in the other. Solution at the tool is hot enough to scald through a wet glove, so keep the trigger hand clear of the jets while you reposition, in the glove your employer's PPE assessment under 29 CFR 1910.132 selected for hot extraction.
Dry the flight deliberately and measure it. Set air movement at the bottom aimed up the flight so it lifts moisture off the noses and the landing, and take moisture readings at every third tread plus the bottom landing, against a dry reference taken on carpet of the same construction elsewhere in the house. Acceptance: every reading, judged at its own point rather than averaged, within 2 points of that reference. Wrong looks like a flight released on the strength of a dry-feeling middle tread while the landing is still holding water; if any single point fails, the barricade stays, air movement moves to that point, and it is re-checked before release. Hazard: an air mover at the bottom of a flight sits exactly where someone steps off, so it goes to the side of the walking line with its cord run along the base of the wall, and the household is told which flight has a machine at the foot of it.
Groom, restore, and release with a specific instruction. Groom each tread in one direction, put back any stair rods removed at step 3, strip the masking off the landing edge, and give the release instruction. Acceptance: rods reseated and checked by hand, no masking left anywhere, treads groomed uniformly, and the customer told the closure time and the shoe rule. Wrong looks like a customer walking down in socks on a damp flight, so the instruction is specific: grip-soled shoes or bare feet, never socks, until the flight is fully dry. If any step 7 point is still failing, the flight is not released, the barricade stays and the customer gets a call-back time. Hazard: this puts you on the flight one last time with tools in hand, so carry nothing in the rail hand and take the rods and masking down in two trips.
The record this produces
Flight identifier and tread count; the closure window and whether a second route exists; the defect inspection result with photos of anything that stopped the job; product and dilution inherited from the extraction limits card; the dry-reference reading and where it was taken; each measured point with its reading and verdict; any re-check reading with its time; and the release instruction given.
The dry-reference reading matters more than it looks. A moisture meter on carpet reads relatively, not absolutely, so a number without the reference it was compared against is not a measurement, and it is the first thing the office needs when a customer calls to say the stairs were still wet at bedtime.
Worked pass: 13-tread flight, landing fails the dry check
Straight flight of 13 treads from an upper hall to a bottom landing, cut pile matching the second-floor carpet, with a second stair at the far end of the house.
Step 1 confirms the second stair, so no closure conflict, and sets a two-hour stay-off window with the household. Step 2 runs the hose up the left side and ties it to the newel post at the top. Step 3 finds the handrail solid, no loose nosings, no lifted edge, and no rods on this flight, so the job proceeds.
Step 4 vacuums per tread with a crevice tool. The towel test on tread 5 comes back clean from the middle and gritty from the skirt end, so both ends get worked again before moving on. Steps 5 and 6 run top down with reduced pre-spray volume, two wet passes and dry strokes at each nose, and no tread needs a third dry pass.
Step 7 sets one air mover at the foot aimed up the flight and takes readings at every third tread plus the landing, which is treads 3, 6, 9 and 12 plus the landing, five points. The dry reference is taken on second-floor carpet of the same construction. Readings come in at 1, 1, 2 and 2 points above reference for the four treads, all inside the 2-point gate, and the landing reads 5 points above reference. That is a fail at a single point, judged at that point rather than on the mean of the five, which is 2.2.
The stop rule fires. The barricade stays at the bottom, the air mover is repositioned onto the landing itself, and the customer is told the flight is not released yet. A re-check 45 minutes later reads the landing at 1 point above reference, inside the gate, and the four tread points re-read unchanged.
Step 8 then grooms all 13 treads in one direction, removes the masking from the landing edge, takes the barricade down, and gives the release instruction: shoes with grip soles or bare feet, no socks, until the flight is fully dry.
Self-check against the sections above: the five measured points named at step 7 are the five reported here; the gate applied is the worst point within 2 points of reference, exactly as the acceptance clause states, and the run does not quietly switch to the mean; and the barricade placed at step 1 is the same barricade taken down at step 8, after the failed point passed rather than before.
