Traffic Lane and Pre-Spray Application

Purpose

Pre-spray is a dose, not a mood. It is the product at the label dilution, applied at a coverage rate, held for a dwell time, and then recovered in full. Get the dose wrong in either direction and the job fails in a way the customer does not see on the day: under-apply and the lane stays gray after a beautiful-looking wet pass, over-apply and you leave a soapy residue that pulls soil back into the lane within weeks and brings the customer back angry at a job they originally praised.

The rule this SOP enforces: what goes down comes back out, and you can state how much went down.

Scope

Covers dry soil removal, lane identification, product selection against the limits card, sprayer calibration, application, dwell, agitation and the verification that the pre-spray was recovered. Applies to residential and small-commercial hot water extraction and to low-moisture interim work.

Does not cover fiber identification and the limits card, colorfastness testing, individual spot chemistry, or urine decontamination; each has its own SOP and each is an input or a branch off this one. Where a spot needs a different chemistry from the lane, it is treated under the spot triage SOP before this procedure starts, not during it.

Procedure

  1. Dry soil removal before anything wet. Vacuum the full area in both directions, slow passes, with the machine's filtration intact. Acceptance: no visible grit lifts onto a white towel dragged across a cleaned lane, and the bag or tank is below its fill line before you start. Wrong looks like pre-spray turning dry particulate into mud that the wand then pushes deeper; if the vacuum stops picking up, stop and check the bag, the belt and the brush before continuing rather than making more passes. Hazard: emptying a bag or canister is where settled dust becomes airborne, so change it outdoors, never blow a filter clean with compressed air, and keep the cord run behind you so it is not under the beater bar.

  2. Identify and measure the traffic lanes separately from the field. Lanes are darker, matted, and follow the doorways; they take a different dose and often a different product from the open field. Acceptance: lane dimensions and field dimensions written down per room, in feet, so a coverage figure can be calculated rather than guessed. Wrong looks like a whole room treated at lane strength, which over-applies most of the floor; if lanes are not visually distinct, treat the whole area at field dose and note that no lane treatment was needed. Hazard: none at this step, it is measuring, though keep the tape and the marker out of the entry path where the hose will run.

  3. Select the product against the limits card and the soil type, and read the label before mixing. Greasy darkened soil calls for a product formulated for oily soil, gritty soil responds to a general pre-spray, and the limits card sets the pH ceiling. Acceptance: the selected product's label states a dilution ratio, a dwell time and a coverage rate, and its usable pH sits inside the card's band. Wrong looks like two products combined in one tank to cover both soil types, which is never done; if no stocked product fits the card, stop and call the owner rather than substituting. Hazard: the label governs use and it is legally binding in the chemical trades, so where the label names respiratory protection, that protection is a condition of use, and if nobody on site is in a written respiratory program under 29 CFR 1910.134 with a current medical evaluation and fit test, the crew does not do that work with that product.

  4. Mix at label dilution and time the sprayer output before you spray carpet. Trigger into a graduated container for 30 seconds, double it for a per-minute figure, and check it against the output your dose assumes. Acceptance: measured output within 10 percent of the target rate. Wrong looks like a worn or wrong nozzle quietly delivering half again as much product per pass; if the output falls outside the band, change the nozzle or the tip and re-time until it passes rather than compensating by walking faster. Hazard: mixing means open concentrate at chest height, so goggles and chemical gloves go on before the cap comes off, concentrate is added to water rather than the reverse, and no acid-side product ever shares a container or a rinse tank with a chlorinated one, which liberates chlorine gas. Concentrate in an eye means 15 minutes at running water and medical attention, not finishing the room first.

  5. Apply at the calculated volume, lanes first, in overlapping passes. Coarse fan pattern at low pressure, held at the height the sprayer is designed for, walking a consistent speed so the calculated volume covers the calculated area. Acceptance: the sprayer's tank drops by the calculated volume for the area treated, plus or minus the same 10 percent band, and the carpet is uniformly damp with no puddling and no dry stripes. Wrong looks like a tank emptied into one lane; if you run out early, you are over-applying, stop, re-measure and re-time rather than mixing more. Hazard: spraying makes an aerosol, which is an inhalation route that gloves and goggles do not address, so occupants and pets leave the room for application and the full dwell, ventilation is opened before you start, and if anyone in the household reacts with coughing or wheezing, stop applying, get them outside into fresh air, ventilate the room and follow the label's first aid rather than pressing on. Overspray onto an adjacent hard floor is a slip hazard, so wipe it as it happens rather than at the end.

  6. Dwell for the label time, then agitate. Set a timer. Dwell is chemistry doing the work you would otherwise do with heat and pressure, and it is the cheapest tool on the truck. Acceptance: the timer shows the label dwell, and the carpet is still damp at the end of it. Wrong looks like solution drying in the pile, which redeposits everything it suspended; if the room is hot or the sun is on the floor, mist lightly to keep it damp rather than extending dwell on a dry lane, and never add a second full dose to a dwelling lane. Hazard: a counter-rotating brush machine grabs cords, fringe and fingers, so the cord runs behind the operator, the machine is unplugged before anyone clears the brush, and it does not run on stairs or over a transition strip.

  7. Check soil release on a test patch before committing the room. Press a folded white towel into a dwelled lane with firm pressure and read what comes up. Acceptance: visible soil transfers to the towel, which means the pre-spray has suspended it and extraction will remove it. Wrong looks like a clean towel off a dirty lane, which means the chemistry is not working on that soil; the response is a second dwell or a different product class after the current dose is extracted, not more of the same product on top. Hazard: pressing a wet towel by hand is direct contact with the working solution, so this is done gloved, and hands get rinsed rather than wiped on a shop towel before touching anything of the customer's.

  8. Extract to recovery, then verify the pre-spray is gone. Rinse per the extraction SOP, then wipe a clean white towel across the dried lane once the area has had air movement on it. Acceptance: no slick feel, no foam when a few drops of clear water are worked into the pile with a fingertip, and no soil returning to the towel. Wrong looks like a lane that feels stiff or crunchy dry, which is residue and will re-soil fast; if it foams or feels slick, rinse that area again with clear water on the acid side rather than leaving it. Hazard: extraction solution at the wand is hot enough to scald through a wet glove or a soaked knee, so keep hands off the jets, and restore here whatever step 5 changed: the HVAC or ceiling fan turned off to stop overspray drift goes back to the setting recorded on the ticket, and you confirm it is running before you leave, because a system left off in July is a callback of a different kind.

The record this produces

Per room: lane and field dimensions in feet; product name, dilution ratio, label dwell and label coverage rate; the timed sprayer output and whether it passed the 10 percent band; the calculated volume and the volume actually used; the towel check result at step 7; the residue check result at step 8; and the HVAC setting recorded at step 5 with the time it was restored.

That volume line is the one the office needs. A shop that can say how much product went onto a floor can defend a residue complaint, price a job honestly, and see when a tech is quietly doubling the dose to make a hard lane look better on the day.

Worked pass: bedroom lane, sprayer out of calibration

Bedroom measures 12 ft by 20 ft, so 240 sq ft, with a distinct lane 3 ft wide running the 20 ft length, so 60 sq ft. Soil in the lane reads greasy and darkened, and the limits card from pre-inspection allows a general oily-soil pre-spray at its label pH.

Step 3 selects that product. Its label states a coverage rate of about 200 sq ft per gallon of mixed solution at normal soil, so the lane needs 60 divided by 200, which is 0.30 gal.

Step 4 mixes at label dilution and times the sprayer. Target output is 64 fl oz per minute, and at that rate 0.30 gal, which is 38.4 fl oz, takes 38.4 divided by 64, or 0.60 minutes of trigger time, about 36 seconds. The timed test collects 48 fl oz in 30 seconds, which doubles to 96 fl oz per minute. That is 96 against a 57.6 to 70.4 band, so it fails, and it fails by 50 percent over target. The stop rule fires: the nozzle is changed, not the walking speed. The re-timed output collects 33 fl oz in 30 seconds, so 66 fl oz per minute, which is 3 percent over 64 and inside the band.

Step 5 applies 38.4 fl oz across the 60 sq ft lane in overlapping passes with occupants out of the room and the window open. Tank drop reads about 38 fl oz, inside the band. The field gets its own lighter dose calculated the same way off the remaining 180 sq ft.

Step 6 dwells the label time with the timer running, and the lane is still damp at the end. Step 7 towel check pulls a heavy gray transfer, so the chemistry is working. Step 8 extracts, dries with air movement, and the towel wipe comes back clean with no slick feel and no foam under a fingertip of clear water. The HVAC, switched off at step 5, is switched back to the recorded setting and confirmed running.

Self-check against the sections above: the only figures used downstream, 240 sq ft, 60 sq ft, the 200 sq ft per gallon label rate and the 64 fl oz per minute target, are all stated before they are used; 60 divided by 200 is 0.30 gal and 0.30 gal is 38.4 fl oz; and the failed reading, 96, is compared against the same 10 percent band the acceptance clause names rather than a looser one.
