Cleaning Chemical Compatibility Reference

Overview

Cleaning chemicals interact dangerously when mixed. Bleach + ammonia produces toxic chloramine gas - has hospitalized cleaners + killed in extreme cases. This is the in-truck card showing which products to NEVER combine, and which surfaces each chemistry is safe for.

Safe alone, dangerous when combined: even when a product label is safe, NEVER mix products unless the label explicitly says so. The classic dangerous combinations are when household cleaning agents - already separately safe - are combined unintentionally.

Reference Table - Surface Compatibility

Acidic cleaners (vinegar, citric, descalers):

  • ✓ Hard water stains
  • ✓ Soap scum
  • ✓ Toilets (interior), tile (ceramic only), chrome, stainless steel
  • ✗ Calcareous stone (marble, travertine, limestone, onyx) - ETCHES; the defining property is calcium carbonate, which acid dissolves. Granite and slate are silicate stone and do not etch, but acid still attacks their sealers, so keep acids off all stone
  • ✗ Wood floors - strips finish
  • ✗ Cement-based grout (over long exposure)
  • ✗ Aluminum - corrodes
  • ✗ Electronics

Alkaline cleaners (degreasers, soap scum removers, baking soda):

  • ✓ Grease + oil cleanup
  • ✓ Carpet pre-spray
  • ✓ Kitchen surfaces, range hoods, oven exteriors
  • ✗ Aluminum - corrodes (esp. dishwasher detergent on aluminum)
  • ✗ Wool carpet - degrades fibers
  • ✗ Some painted surfaces - strips finish

Bleach (sodium hypochlorite):

  • ✓ Disinfection of hard surfaces (when diluted per label)
  • ✓ Mildew removal from tile + grout
  • ✓ White fabric stains
  • ✗ Mixing with anything else
  • ✗ Colored fabric - permanent color removal
  • ✗ Natural stone - etches + discolors
  • ✗ Stainless steel (prolonged contact corrodes)

Hydrogen peroxide:

  • ✓ White grout brightening
  • ✓ Old organic stains (blood, urine)
  • ✓ Disinfection alternative to bleach
  • ✗ Mixing with vinegar OR bleach
  • ✗ Carpet (color-removal risk; always test first)
  • ✗ Sensitive electronics

Solvents (P.O.G., citrus-based, mineral spirits):

  • ✓ Oil-based stains, asphalt, tar, ink
  • ✓ Adhesive residue
  • ✓ Some carpet spots (oil-soluble)
  • ✗ Synthetic surfaces (some plastics melt)
  • ✗ Floor finishes - strips polyurethane
  • ✗ Painted surfaces - strips paint

Safety Best Practices

  • One product at a time. Apply chemistry; rinse with plain water; only THEN apply a different chemistry. Never overlap.
  • Ventilate. Open windows + run exhaust fans while using any cleaner.
  • PPE. Eye protection + gloves for any product stronger than dish soap.
  • Storage. Acidic + alkaline products on opposite ends of the truck.
  • Original containers. Don't decant into unlabeled containers - confusing them is how mixing accidents happen.
  • SDS sheets. Keep Safety Data Sheets accessible for every product in use. OSHA-required for crews.

Chloramine gas (from bleach + ammonia) has hospitalized many cleaning crews. The mixture happens unintentionally - a customer asks "can you also use this product I have?" and the answer is YES if you can verify it isn't ammonia-based, NO if you can't. When in doubt, never mix; use your own products only.
