Floor Machine and Pad Selection Standard
Purpose
Pad selection is where a floor job is won or lost, and it is almost always made off the color of the box.
The color is a manufacturer's convention, not a specification. Different mills assign different colors to the same abrasive grade, and a pad's real limits are printed on the pad itself: its grade and its maximum rated speed. Choose off color and you get one of two failures. Too aggressive cuts through the finish into the substrate in a couple of passes, turning a scrub-and-recoat into a strip-and-recoat the shop swallows. Too passive leaves the scuffs after four passes and puts the recoat down over soil that telegraphs through in a week. The third failure is the one that injures: a pad rated below the machine's speed, run on a burnisher, comes apart at knee height.
This procedure picks the pad on evidence from a test patch rather than off the box, and verifies machine and pad are rated for each other before either touches the floor.
Scope
Covers selecting a machine class and a pad for scrubbing, spray buffing and burnishing on hard floors in occupied buildings, and the test patch that proves the choice.
Does not cover the strip-and-recoat procedure, owned by the commercial floor strip and wax SOP, or the burnishing procedure, owned by the floor finish burnishing how-to. Hardwood is out of scope for a water-fed swing machine entirely; the hardwood floor care how-to owns why.
Machine class against pad grade
Speed ranges vary by manufacturer, so the machine's own data plate governs, not this table.

Two gates come off this table and both are hard:
- The pad's printed maximum rpm must be at or above the machine's rated speed. A pad with no printed rating does not go on anything above the swing class.
- The finish has to be rated for what you are about to do to it. Burnishing puts heat into the coating, and a finish the manufacturer does not list as burnishable smears, powders or hazes. That answer lives on the finish manufacturer's technical data sheet, not the pad box.

Procedure
Step 1 - Identify the substrate and the existing coating before you choose anything. Look at an edge, a doorway or under a corner tile where the finish is thin, and ask the site what was last put down. Acceptance: substrate named (VCT, sheet vinyl, LVT, terrazzo, sealed concrete), coating named or recorded as unknown. What wrong looks like: assuming VCT under a coating on what is actually LVT, which many manufacturers say must not be machine-stripped. Stop rule: unknown substrate or coating means no aggressive pad runs until the site or the flooring manufacturer answers, and no water-fed swing machine touches wood at all. Hazard: none, inspection with the machine off.
Step 2 - Read the machine data plate, then read the pad, and confirm the pad covers the machine. Acceptance: the machine's rated speed in rpm written down, and every pad going on it printed with a maximum rated speed at or above that number. What wrong looks like: a pad chosen by color out of a stack with no rating printed on it. Stop rule: a pad without a printed rating does not go on anything faster than the swing class, and a pad rated below the machine does not go on at all. Hazard: a pad run over its rating can disintegrate and throw fragments at knee height, so nobody stands in the plane of the disc as it spins up, and hands stay out of the clutch plate when fitting because the disc turns as you seat it.
Step 3 - Set up power on the assumption the floor will be wet. Route the cord over your shoulder and behind the machine so it never runs under the disc. Acceptance: cord jacket unbroken end to end, ground pin present, machine plugged through a GFCI at the receptacle or in line, cord dressed behind the operator. What wrong looks like: a ground pin missing and taped over, or a cord lying in the wet path ahead of the machine. Stop rule: a missing ground pin or a cut jacket red-tags the machine. Hazard: water plus a corded machine is the shock route on this whole job, so the GFCI is not optional, and a GFCI that trips takes the machine out of service rather than sending it to a receptacle where it will not trip.
Step 4 - Run a test patch of about 3 ft by 3 ft with the least aggressive pad first. Pick a representative area with normal soil, not the worst corner and not the clean edge. Acceptance: four passes with the pad flat, worked wet with the product the account uses at its label dilution. What wrong looks like: starting with the strip pad because it will definitely work, which removes finish you did not intend to and commits the corridor to a recoat. Stop rule: if the least aggressive pad exposes substrate, stop immediately, because the coating is thinner than anyone thought and this is a different job. Hazard: a swing machine torques hard and the handle kicks, so both hands on the grips, feet clear of the disc, pad down flat rather than on an edge; keep the public out with signage while the patch runs, and if someone walks in, stop the machine rather than steering around them.
Step 5 - Judge the patch at a raking sight line and stop at the first pad that meets acceptance. Crouch and look across the patch from about 6 ft with the light behind the surface, the only angle that shows swirl. Acceptance: soil and scuffing released, coating still present across the whole patch, no visible swirl or scoring at that sight line. What wrong looks like: judging from directly above, where a swirled patch reads as clean. Stop rule: acceptance not met, step up one grade and run a fresh patch alongside; acceptance met, stop there and do not try the next grade to see if it is faster. Hazard: stripper and aggressive scrub chemistry are caustic and burn skin and eye on contact, so gloves and eye protection stay on to reach into the patch, and a splash gets flushed at once for the duration the label states rather than wiped.
Step 6 - Run the area with the chosen pad, watching for substrate exposure at every pass. Acceptance: the whole area worked at the chosen grade with the coating intact and no bare substrate anywhere. What wrong looks like: a section going to bare floor within two passes, meaning it was previously stripped and re-coated thin. Stop rule: any bare substrate stops the machine on the spot; that section comes out of scope to the supervisor as a strip-and-recoat, and the rest continues only once that decision is made. Hazard: this step has the longest exposure and two routes matter - dry burnishing generates a fine finish dust that is a respiratory route and needs the vacuum assist or dust skirt working, and stripper vapor accumulates in a closed corridor and needs doors open and air moving; if anyone develops a cough, headache or eye sting the machine stops and everyone leaves until air is moving, and a respirator is only an option for someone in a written program under 29 CFR 1910.134.
Step 7 - Shut down, restore, and release the floor only when it is dry. Switch off, unplug and keep the plug in sight before the pad comes off, then pull the pad and coil the cord. Acceptance: machine unplugged with the plug in sight, pad off and logged, dead-man switch proved by operating it and confirming the disc stops, doors propped for ventilation at step 6 closed and latched under their own closers, wet floor signs collected only after the floor is dry to the touch. What wrong looks like: signs pulled at end of shift on a floor that is still tacky. Stop rule: a dead-man switch that does not stop the disc red-tags the machine before it goes back on the truck. Hazard: this step puts power back into the machine to prove the switch, so it is done with the pad off, the machine tipped back on its wheels and hands clear of the driver, and if it starts the moment the plug goes in the switch has failed closed and it is red-tagged on the spot.
The record this produces
Per area, per visit: substrate, coating named or unknown, machine identifier and rated speed, pad grade and the pad's printed maximum speed, the test-patch result for each grade tried, the grade selected, and any section pulled from scope at step 6 with the reason.
The test-patch record is the one that pays off. Next quarter the same corridor gets the same grade without anyone re-running patches, and when a new coating goes down the record says what the old one took, which is how you notice the floor now needs a heavier pad than it did a year ago. The scope-change note protects the shop: a deferred section is a sheen difference the customer sees, and a dated line saying they were told beforehand is the difference between a scheduled job and an argument.
Worked pass: a corridor scrub-and-recoat on VCT
Substrate confirmed VCT at a doorway edge; site confirmed the last coating and the finish manufacturer lists it as scrubbable. Machine is a 20 in swing, data plate 175 rpm. Pads on the truck are printed max 500 rpm, and 175 is at or below 500, so step 2 passes.
Test patch, 3 ft by 3 ft, mid-corridor:
- Polish grade, four passes. Scuffing still present, no soil release. Acceptance not met at step 5, so step up a grade.
- Scrub grade, four passes. Soil and scuffing released, coating present across the whole patch, no swirl at the 6 ft raking sight line. Acceptance met, so selection stops here and the next grade up is never run.
Step 6, running the corridor: at the section inside the loading door, the finish came to bare VCT within two passes. Step 6 fails and takes its stop rule. The machine stopped, and the site confirmed that section had been stripped and re-coated on its own about a year earlier, so the coating there is a fraction of the thickness elsewhere.
That section came out of scope to the supervisor as a separate strip-and-recoat. The rest of the corridor finished at the scrub grade and took its recoat, and the account manager told the customer that day that the two areas will read as different sheen until the deferred section is done. Step 7 restore: the propped ventilation doors closed and were watched latching, the dead-man switch was proved with the pad off and stopped the disc, and signs stayed up until the recoat was dry to the touch.
Self-check with figures beside the criteria: the pad rating gate exercised with both numbers printed (machine 175 rpm, pad max 500 rpm); both patches judged at the same 6 ft raking sight line and at the same four passes; selection stopped at the first grade meeting acceptance, as step 5 requires; the step 6 stop rule taken on substrate exposure rather than absorbed into the run.
Exceptions you will hit
Coating unknown and nobody at the site knows: the test patch still runs, from the least aggressive grade available, with one added acceptance condition, that no substrate is exposed at any point. If it is, the answer is a strip, and that is a quote, not a scrub.
LVT, or a manufacturer that prohibits machine work: honour the flooring manufacturer's written instruction over any pad chart, because that instruction is what the customer's warranty runs on.
Occupied corridor with no way to close it: the job moves to a time it can be closed. A swing machine and wet chemistry through pedestrian traffic is a fall the shop will own, and no pad selection fixes it.
