Kitchen Clean, Standard Residential
Purpose
The kitchen is the only room on a residential visit where the surfaces a cleaner touches are also surfaces food touches. That changes two things: the product has to be legal for the surface, and a disinfectant has to be rinsed off food contact unless its label says otherwise. Get that wrong and the shop has left pesticide residue on a cutting board, a use inconsistent with the labeling and a real complaint rather than a cosmetic one.
It also draws the line the shop bills against: absorbing out-of-scope soil turns a 25 minute room into a 45 minute room, and nobody knows why the route ran late.
Scope
Covers the kitchen on a recurring or one-time standard residential clean: counters, backsplash, sink, cabinet fronts, appliance exteriors, microwave interior, table and chairs, floor.
Does not cover oven, refrigerator, dishwasher or freezer interiors, which have their own procedure, nor natural stone counters beyond a pH-neutral wipe, because a general kitchen degreaser etches marble and limestone. A hood filter soak or a commercial line is deep-clean scope, quoted separately.

Procedure
1. Walk the kitchen and set the boundary before you open anything. Photograph anything already chipped, etched or stained, and photograph the cooktop before you touch it. Acceptance: at least three dated photos on the job (cooktop, counter run, floor) plus a one-line note naming every surface you cannot identify. Wrong looks like: you find a chip at step 5 with no before photo, so the shop cannot separate your work from the prior state. Stop rule: no photo, no product on that surface. Hazard: none, a look-and-record step.
2. Clear the counters, then run one dry pass high to low. Move small appliances and canisters to the table, not the floor. Dry-wipe or vacuum cabinet tops in reach, hood exterior, upper cabinet faces and backsplash before any liquid lands. Acceptance: counters bare to the surface, no loose debris a wet cloth would smear. Wrong looks like: a wet cloth on dry flour, which pastes it into the grout line and triples the work. Stop rule: unplug an appliance at the cord before moving it, never pull it by the body. Hazard: a cord that comes taut at the outlet drags a hot device onto your foot, so clear the cord and set the appliance down before letting go.
3. Dilute and label to the product label, not to habit. Read the dilution and the contact time, then write the product name and mix date on the bottle, because a spray bottle filled on the truck is a secondary container and 29 CFR 1910.1200 requires it to carry the product identity and hazard warning before anyone else picks it up. For an EPA-registered disinfectant the label directions bind, so an eyeballed pour is both under the kill claim and outside the label. Acceptance: every bottle entering the kitchen carries a legible name and dilution, and you can state the contact time out loud before spraying. Wrong looks like: an unlabeled blue liquid in a spray bottle. Stop rule: unlabeled bottle goes back to the vehicle unused. Hazard: never combine chlorine bleach with an acid descaler or an ammoniated glass cleaner. Bleach plus acid liberates chlorine gas, bleach plus ammonia liberates chloramine, and both injure in a kitchen-sized room in seconds. If two have already met in a sink or bucket, everyone leaves, the bucket stays where it is, the customer stays out until the room has aired, and anyone coughing or hoarse afterward is a medical call, not a wait-and-see.
4. Cooktop and hood exterior. Apply degreaser to the cloth, not to the burner or control panel, and let it dwell before working it. Acceptance: no visible grease film under a raking light held low across it, control panel legible and dry. Wrong looks like: soil that lightens but will not release after two applications at full dwell, which is baked carbon, not grease. Stop rule: two applications is the limit; no scouring pad, no razor on glass-ceramic. Log it out of scope. Hazard: an alkaline degreaser burns skin on contact and injures an eye on splash, so chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection meeting 29 CFR 1910.133 go on before the trigger is pulled, and a splash gets 15 minutes of running water and a call to the lead, not a wipe on a sleeve. Keep caustic degreaser off bare aluminum trim and drip pans, because caustic attacks aluminum, pits it, and gives off hydrogen while it does.
5. Counters and table: clean, then disinfect, then rinse. Wipe the surface clean of soil, apply the disinfectant, leave it visibly wet for the full label contact time (commonly one to ten minutes by product and claim), then rinse food-contact areas with potable water unless the label states no rinse is required at your dilution. Acceptance: surface still wet at the end of the timed period, every food-contact surface rinsed and dried. Wrong looks like: spraying and wiping in one motion, which delivers a fraction of the contact time and leaves residue instead of a kill. Stop rule: if the surface dries early, re-apply and re-time; the first pass does not count. Hazard: a quaternary ammonium disinfectant is a skin and respiratory sensitizer, so spray low and toward the surface, not into room air, and where the kitchen has no openable window and the customer reports asthma, wipe it on instead of spraying.
6. Sink, faucet and drain. Basin first, then faucet and handles, then strainer and the visible drain lip. Acceptance: no film when a dry fingertip is dragged across the basin, no spotting on chrome after buffing dry, no standing water. Wrong looks like: a bright basin with a gray ring at the waterline, meaning the cleaner worked the flat and skipped the radius. Stop rule: a drain that backs up or smells of sewage is a plumbing call, not a stronger chemical. Hazard: never send a chlorine product into a drain that has just taken an acid drain product, and never reach blind into a disposal. If the strainer comes out, the disposal switch is off first and your hand goes nowhere the impeller can reach.
7. Appliance exteriors and the microwave interior. Exteriors, then handles, then the microwave cavity and turntable. Acceptance: handles wiped last and visibly clean under an angled light, the highest-touch surface in the room and the first place a customer checks. Wrong looks like: streaked stainless, a cloth and direction fault rather than a product fault. Stop rule: interiors other than the microwave are out of scope here. Hazard: never spray liquid at a control panel, display, door switch or vent slot; liquid behind a membrane panel kills the board and the shop owns the appliance.
8. Floor last, dry then wet. Sweep or vacuum the whole floor including the toe kick and the appliance gap, then damp mop to the substrate's rule. Acceptance: no grit under a shoe sole dragged across the floor before mopping, and the floor released on the check the wet floor and slip hazard SOP sets, no sheen at a low angle to a light and dry to the back of a hand, never on a count of minutes. Wrong looks like: mop water pooling at a wood or laminate seam, which swells the core permanently. Stop rule: cannot identify the floor, use a barely damp flat mop and note the surface rather than guessing a product. Hazard: the wet floor is this room's real injury risk, so the sign goes out before the mop does and stays up until that check passes, and you mop toward the exit, not into a corner.
9. Restore, verify and close. Return every moved item using the step 1 photo, plug back in what you unplugged, confirm each powers up. Acceptance: opening and closing photos show the same items in the same places, and every unplugged appliance shows its clock or ready light. Wrong looks like: a coffee maker back on the counter but dead, found the next morning. Stop rule: an appliance that will not power up is reported to the lead and the customer before you leave. Hazard: reaching behind a counter to reseat a plug puts a hand near a hot surface and a wet counter at once, so dry your hands, look before you reach, and never reseat a plug into an outlet with visible scorching.
The record this produces
All five land on that visit's job record before the crew leaves, and the surface notes are copied onto the customer file so the next cleaner has them at dispatch.
- Before and after photos - cooktop, counter run, floor, three of each minimum, dated. These settle a damage claim, and are worthless without the before set.
- Surface notes - anything unidentified, plus stone, unsealed wood or specialty finishes.
- Contact time honored - the product and the time you actually held, not the one on the bottle. A disputed illness claim asks this.
- Out-of-scope note - what you found, what you stopped on, what it would take. This is the deep-clean quote.
- Segment times - minutes per step. A kitchen that runs consistently long is either a scope problem or a training problem, and the times say which.
Worked pass: a biweekly recurring kitchen that runs 12 percent long
Budget 25 minutes, planned as 2, 3, 1, 4, 5, 3, 3, 3 and 1 across steps 1 to 9.
Step 1 produced four photos and one surface note: the island top is unidentified and visibly seamed, so it is treated as possible stone, pH-neutral product only. Step 2 cleared eleven items to the table. Step 3 logged a quat disinfectant at label dilution, four minute contact time read off that label.
Step 4 failed. The first application at full dwell lightened a ring at the rear right burner without releasing it; the second moved it no further. Two applications is the step's limit, so the stop rule fired: no pad, no blade, log it. It ran 7 minutes against 4 planned, 3 over, and produced an out-of-scope note naming a baked carbon ring needing a soak.
Step 5 held: timed at 4 minutes, surface still visibly wet at 4, then prep counter and table rinsed with potable water because that label carries no no-rinse food-contact statement. The island took pH-neutral cleaner only, per step 1. Step 6 came back clean on the fingertip drag, no waterline ring. Step 8 vacuumed then damp mopped sealed porcelain tile, sign out from before the mop went down until the low-angle look showed no sheen and a hand came away dry. Step 9 restored eleven items against the photo, eleven back, coffee maker clock reading again.
Total: 2 + 3 + 1 + 7 + 5 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 28 minutes against 25 planned, 3 over, which is 12 percent over budget. All of that overrun sits in step 4, and its stop rule held it to 3 minutes rather than 15. A cleaner who kept scrubbing would have scratched a glass-ceramic top and turned an upsell into a replacement.
Two exceptions this pass exposes. The customer was out, so the note went to the office rather than being raised at the door; when they are home, show them the ring and let the office quote it, because asking you to do it now is a scope change that goes to the lead before product touches the surface. And where counters are buried in belongings, clean what is exposed, photograph what was not, and note it rather than relocating personal items into cupboards the customer will not think to check.
