Microfiber Laundering and Color Coding
Purpose
Microfiber towels almost never wear out on a job. They die in the laundry, and they die quietly.
The fiber is a split polyester and polyamide filament, and the split is the whole product: it creates the surface area that lifts soil and the electrostatic grab that holds dust without chemical. Anything that fills the splits ends that. Fabric softener and dryer sheets coat them by design. Excess detergent leaves the same film. Hard-water minerals plate them. A dryer run at a temperature ordinary cotton shrugs off glazes the filament tips over, and unlike the others that one is permanent.
A loaded towel looks and feels correct. It streaks glass, smears grease instead of lifting it, and pushes dust around. The crew blames the glass cleaner and the shop buys a different one.
The second half of this procedure protects the color code, which is only real if the laundry preserves it. A restroom towel returning to the general stack moves fecal organisms to a desk, and nobody involved will know.
Scope
Covers collection, segregation, washing, drying, testing and retirement of microfiber towels, mops and pads, and the color assignment that governs where each one may be used.
Does not cover which product goes on the towel, and does not cover the quat contact-time consequences of using the wrong fiber, which the disinfectant contact time verification SOP on this shelf cites back to here. Contaminated laundry that has been in contact with blood or other potentially infectious material leaves this procedure at step 2 and goes to the shop's bloodborne pathogens exposure control plan.
The color code this shop runs
Color conventions are not standardized. Different healthcare and janitorial programs run opposite assignments for the same colors, so what matters is that your shop picks one, posts it at the laundry and on every cart, and never changes it mid-contract. This is the assignment used in the worked pass:

Why this file owns the quat warning: quaternary ammonium binds to cotton and other cellulose fibers, which strips the active out of the solution before it reaches the surface. A cotton rag used with a quat disinfectant can deliver a fraction of the concentration the label assumes. Microfiber binds far less, but not zero, and the amount depends on the towel construction, so the product manufacturer's own compatibility statement is the source, not this table.

Procedure
Step 1 - Bag towels by color at the point of use, sealed, without sorting by hand. One bag per color travels on the cart. A towel that touches the floor is done for that visit and goes in its bag, not back in the caddy. Acceptance: every used towel in a bag matching its color, bags closed before they leave the room. What wrong looks like: a single hamper filled all night and sorted at the laundry, which is the moment the color code stops existing. Stop rule: a towel whose color you cannot identify goes to the red bag, which is the most restrictive. Hazard: a used restroom towel carries fecal organisms as a contact and hand-to-mouth route, so gloves stay on, nobody shakes or compresses a bag with their hands, and hands get washed after the last bag is closed rather than at the end of the shift.
Step 2 - Segregate at the laundry and route contaminated linen out of this procedure. Any towel that contacted blood or other potentially infectious material is handled under 29 CFR 1910.1030, whose laundry provisions require contaminated laundry to be handled as little as possible with minimum agitation, bagged at the location of use, and handled with gloves. Acceptance: color-separated loads, no contaminated item in a general load. What wrong looks like: reaching into a bag to check for a stain, which defeats the provision. Stop rule: if you cannot tell whether an item is contaminated, it is contaminated. Hazard: this step is where sharps injure - a towel that wrapped a razor, a bulb or glass. Never squeeze a bag to judge its contents, tip it into the machine rather than reaching in, and if a sharp breaks skin start the bloodborne exposure procedure the same day.
Step 3 - Load microfiber alone, at the fill level the machine allows. No cotton, no terry, no mop heads with cotton content in the same drum, because cotton sheds lint straight into the splits and it does not come out. Acceptance: one color per load, microfiber only, drum loose enough that the load tumbles rather than turns as a mass. What wrong looks like: a drum packed full, which stops the mechanical action that carries soil out. Stop rule: not enough of one color to make a sensible load means it waits, not that it rides with another color. Hazard: none, this is loading a machine that is off.
Step 4 - Dose detergent by the label and confirm the softener dispenser is empty. Physically look in the softener cup before you start. Acceptance: detergent measured to the dose its own label states for the load size and water hardness, softener cup dry, no dryer sheets in the room. What wrong looks like: an eyeballed scoop, which overdoses far more often than it underdoses and leaves the same residue softener does. Stop rule: any softener residue in the cup gets rinsed out before the load runs. Hazard: laundry chemicals splash to the eye and powders raise a dust that is an inhalation route, so eye protection and gloves go on for dosing; never put a chlorine product in the same cycle as an acid or ammoniated product, and if that mix happens everyone leaves the room, the door closes, ventilation goes to maximum and nobody re-enters to look.
Step 5 - Dry at or below the care label's maximum, and keep finish-soaked rags out of the dryer entirely. Acceptance: dryer setting at or below the mill's stated maximum for that towel, load out with the nap intact rather than slick. What wrong looks like: a towel that feels smooth and slightly stiff, which is glazed filament and is not recoverable by any wash. Stop rule: a glazed lot is retired, not re-washed. Hazard: rags carrying oil, wood finish or a solvent product can self-heat and ignite in a warm pile, so they never enter the dryer and never sit in a heap - closed metal container, disposed of as the product label directs; the drum and the load also burn skin, so gloves stay on for the unload.
Step 6 - Drop-test a sample of ten pulled at random from the lot. Lay each flat and put one drop of water on it. A functional towel takes the drop in on contact; a loaded one beads it. Acceptance: at most 2 of the 10 bead, which is the 20 percent gate. What wrong looks like: testing the ten on top of the pile, which are the ten that just came out together and share whatever happened to that load. Stop rule: more than 2 of 10 bead, the lot goes to step 7 and does not go back on a cart. Hazard: none, this is a bench test on clean towels.
Step 7 - Strip a failing lot once, re-test, and retire it if it fails again. Hot wash with a residue-stripping detergent dosed per its own label, no softener, second rinse, then repeat step 6 on a fresh random ten. Acceptance: at most 2 of 10 bead on the re-test. What wrong looks like: stripping the same lot repeatedly to keep it in service. Stop rule: fails the re-test and the lot is retired and cut up as shop rags; and if a second lot from a different purchase month also fails, stop retiring towels and look at the machine and the water, because two independent lots failing is a laundry problem. Hazard: same chemical routes as step 4, and the stripping detergent is usually more aggressive, so read its own SDS section 8 rather than assuming the everyday gloves cover it.
Step 8 - Restock carts by color and put the lot code back on the shelf label. Acceptance: every cart's caddy holds only the colors that cart's route uses, and the posted assignment is visible on the cart. What wrong looks like: a red towel in the general stack, which is the failure this whole file exists to prevent. Stop rule: any color found in the wrong stack sends that whole stack back through step 2. Hazard: none, this is restocking clean stock.
The record this produces
Per lot: purchase month as the lot code, count in service, and one row per drop test giving the date, the sample size, the number that beaded, pass or fail against the 20 percent gate, whether a stripping wash ran, and the re-test result.
Per load, the laundry log carries date, color, detergent dose and dryer setting. That is what lets a supervisor answer the two questions a streaking complaint raises: was this lot tested, and did anything change in the wash.
Retire by lot on a test result rather than by counting washes on individual towels. Nobody will do the second one, and an SOP nobody runs is worse than none.
Worked pass: a blue lot that started streaking glass
The route reported streaking on glass and grease smearing on stainless in the same week. Lot: 60 blue towels, purchase-month coded.
Step 6, first test: ten pulled at random from across the shelf. 6 of the 10 beaded, 4 took the drop. The gate allows at most 2 of 10, so 6 fails it. Step 6 takes its stop rule and the lot came off the carts that morning.
Cause found before the strip ran: product sitting in the machine's softener dispenser, which violates step 4, and the previous week a temp had run the blue lot with the shop's cotton bar rags, which violates step 3.
Step 7: hot wash with a stripping detergent at its label dose, no softener, second rinse. Re-test on a fresh random ten: 1 of the 10 beaded, which clears the at-most-2 gate, and the lot went back into service.
Cotton lint is the part that does not fully strip out, so the supervisor flagged this lot for a repeat drop test at its next wash rather than treating one pass as settled. Had that repeat failed, step 7 retires the lot. No other color lot failed in the same period, which is what says this was the lot's own exposure rather than the machine or the water.
Self-check with figures beside the criteria: both tests reported against the same at-most-2-of-10 gate (6 of 10 fails, 1 of 10 passes); both samples ten pulled at random rather than ten off the top; the strip ran once, not repeatedly; the second-lot rule checked, no second lot had failed.
Exceptions you will hit
Customer requires their own laundry service: you lose control of steps 3 to 5, so the step 6 drop test becomes the only gate you have and it runs on every delivery rather than per lot. Put that in the account file.
Site with no laundry access and a same-day turn: towels come back to the shop and the route runs on standing clean stock. Never rinse a used towel in a sink and re-use it on the same visit; a rinsed towel carries the soil and none of the chemical.
Lot fails and the shop is short: the lot is still retired. A known-loaded towel on glass produces the callback the test existed to prevent, and a callback costs more route time than the shortage.
