Composite vs Pressure-Treated Lumber for Decks

Why this matters

A customer choosing deck materials faces the most important decision in the project: pressure-treated lumber (lower cost, shorter life, higher maintenance) or composite / synthetic decking (higher cost, longer life, lower maintenance). The decision is multi-dimensional: budget, aesthetic, maintenance time, lifetime cost. A deck builder who walks the customer through the trade-offs with honest math closes the right material choice; one who pushes one option closes the wrong choice for the customer in many cases. Knowing the actual numbers (cost, lifetime, maintenance) is the diagnostic skill.

The two material families

Pressure-treated lumber

Wood (typically southern yellow pine) infused with preservative chemicals to resist rot, insects, and fungal decay.

Common selection mistakes

Hearing "low maintenance" as "no maintenance." Composite still needs washing. In shade it grows mildew, leaf tannins stain it, and grease from a grill marks it if it sits. Customers told "you will never touch it again" are the ones who call angry in year three.

Dark boards in full sun. Composite runs hotter than wood, and a dark board on a south-facing deck in a hot climate can be genuinely unusable barefoot on a summer afternoon. Put a sample out in the sun on the actual site and have the customer touch it before they choose a color.

Buying a long-life surface and setting it on a short-life frame. The deck lasts as long as its framing, its fasteners, and its flashing, not as long as its boards. If the customer is paying for a surface with decades of life, the frame, the hardware, and the ledger detail have to be specified to match, or somebody rebuilds a frame under perfectly good decking.

Deciding on composite after the frame is up. Composite generally needs tighter joist spacing than wood for the same span, and tighter again for a diagonal pattern and for stair treads. Discovering that after framing means sistering and blocking the whole field. Pick the decking before the joist layout.

Mixing systems. Manufacturer clips with another manufacturer's boards, or generic screws on a board that calls for a specific fastener, is the fastest way to void a warranty that was a main reason for buying the product.

Not reading the warranty before selling it. Coverage varies enormously between structural, fade, and stain, most are prorated, and nearly all carry installation conditions: gapping, ventilation beneath the deck, minimum ground clearance, and no ground contact. A deck built low and tight to grade can fall outside the warranty on day one.

Skipping the gap spec. Thermal movement is real, especially with all-plastic boards and especially when boards are installed cold. Boards butted tight in February buckle in July, and that is an installation failure, not a product defect.

Choosing wood on price without pricing the upkeep. Compare cost per year across the expected life, including cleaning and refinishing, and be honest that a customer who will not do that work ends up with a gray, splintering deck. Some customers genuinely enjoy the maintenance; many say they will and do not. Ask directly.

Gapping wet treated lumber like it was dry, or finishing it immediately. Get the direction right: wet PT off the yard rack is going to SHRINK, so it gets butted tight and opens up to its own side gap as it dries. Gap it 3/16 in. wet and you end up with a gap you can drop a phone through. Dry PT (kiln-dried after treatment) is done moving and gets the gap set at install. Either way, a finish applied before the wood is dry will not penetrate; sprinkle water on it and wait until it soaks in rather than beading.

Treating composite as structural. It is not. Posts, beams, joists, and stringers stay wood or steel regardless of what the walking surface is.

Forgetting local restrictions. Some jurisdictions limit deck surface materials in wildfire-exposed areas. Confirm before you promise a product to a customer.
