Fiberon Promenade Fastener Pattern And Spacing

Why this matters

Fiberon Promenade is a four-sided PVC-capped composite that ships only in a grooved profile - face-screw is not an option from the factory. The board is dimensionally stable lengthwise but moves measurably across its width with temperature, and the manufacturer-published fastener pattern in the Fiberon Promenade Installation Guide is built around that movement. Crews that default to the Trex or TimberTech clip spacing on a Promenade deck get one of two failures: end-gap creep that shows up as a 3/8 in. gap at the rim three summers in, or board sidewall fracture at the clip when the clip is overdriven and the cap is not allowed to slide. This document captures the Promenade-specific fastener spec, the thermal expansion math that drives it, and the field-verification steps you should run before the inspector arrives.

Approved fastener systems

Fiberon publishes three approved fastener paths for Promenade in the current Installation Guide:

  • Fiberon PhantomX hidden fastener with #8 x 1-7/8 in. stainless 305 screw. Default residential system.
  • Fiberon Stowaway hidden fastener with the same screw. Acceptable in standard residential when PhantomX is back-ordered.
  • Cortex for Promenade with the matching plug body. Used at perimeter rim caps and at picture-frame borders where the hidden-fastener clip will not engage.

Substituting a generic Camo Marksman Pro clip or a Trex Hideaway on a Promenade board is not approved and voids the labor portion of the warranty per Fiberon Tech Bulletin TB-04. The Promenade groove profile is 3/16 in. wider than Trex Transcend; a Hideaway clip seats loose and walks under thermal cycling.

Joist spacing and clip pattern

Per the Promenade Installation Guide (current edition):

  • Residential perpendicular install: 16 in. o.c. maximum. PhantomX clip every joist - no skipped joists.
  • Residential diagonal install (30 to 60 degrees): 12 in. o.c. maximum. PhantomX clip every joist.
  • Stair tread install: 10 in. o.c. maximum with double-rim support at nosing. Cortex plug at nosing required - hidden fastener alone is not approved for stair-tread nosing.
  • Commercial multi-family install per ICC-ES ESR-3437: 12 in. o.c. perpendicular. PhantomX clip every joist plus mid-span blocking at 24 in. centers.

Every board end lands on framing. Where a butt joint does not fall on a joist, add blocking under it - solid 2x blocking hung between joists, or a deck blocking bracket. No board end is ever left unsupported, at any board length.

Thermal expansion and gap math

PVC-capped composite expands and contracts more than wood. Fiberon publishes a coefficient of linear thermal expansion of roughly 3.2 x 10^-5 in./in./F for Promenade. For a 16 ft board, the math is:

  • 192 in. x 3.2e-5 x 50 F delta = 0.307 in. of movement.

That is a hair over 5/16 in. across a 50 F swing on one 16 ft board, and it is why end gap is set against install temperature and not to a single number.

Get the direction right, because it is the one thing crews reverse: the colder the board is when you set it, the more room it needs to grow into. A board installed at 30 F is near its minimum length and every degree after that makes it longer. A board installed on a 95 F deck surface is near its maximum length and will only pull back. So the gap runs large cold and small hot:

  • Install temperature below 40 F: 1/4 in. end gap. The board has a full season of growth ahead of it.
  • Install temperature 40 to 80 F: 3/16 in. end gap.
  • Install temperature above 80 F: 1/16 in. end gap minimum. The board is already near maximum length, so the gap will open, not close - but never butt it tight, because a board with nowhere to go lifts the clip out of the joist.

Confirm these against the current Installation Guide for the profile and length you are running; the values above are the working pattern, and Fiberon revises the table between editions.

Side-to-side (board edge) spacing is set by the PhantomX clip and is non-adjustable: roughly 3/16 in. between board edges, automatic when the clip is fully seated. Do not overdrive the clip screw trying to close the side gap; you will fracture the groove sidewall.

Picture-frame and rim-cap detail

Promenade picture-frame borders cannot be hidden-fastened on the perimeter run - the clip needs a board on both sides to engage. The published detail uses Cortex plug fasteners at the perimeter run, two plugs per joist crossing, 1 in. minimum from the board end. The rim cap (the vertical fascia board) is face-screwed with the matching Fiberon color-matched composite screw, two screws per joist crossing, predrilled at 9/64 in. per the Tech Bulletin. Do not back-set the rim cap screw - the cap is decorative and depends on the screw for hold.

Field-verification checklist before inspection

Before you call the inspector:

  1. Pull a tape on three random end gaps. At 40 to 80 F ambient they should read 3/16 in. plus or minus 1/32. If they are tight, the deck will buckle in July.
  2. Confirm one clip per joist on every board, including the second-to-last board (commonly skipped). The Promenade pattern is one clip per joist, not every other joist.
  3. Verify mid-span blocking at every off-joist board butt. Bag a photo for the warranty file.
  4. Confirm the rim cap fascia screws are color-matched and predrilled. An unpredrilled screw is a future split.
  5. Confirm stainless 305 screws at saltwater coastal jobs, or 316 if within the splash zone of an inground saltwater pool. Standard coated screws are permitted inland.

Common field failure modes and the root cause

  • Boards buckled or lifted the clips in July: end gap was set too tight for the install temperature. This is the cold-install failure - a 1/16 in. gap set in February has nowhere to put 5/16 in. of growth.
  • Gap at the rim opened to 3/8 in. on the first cold snap: boards were set hot at a full 1/4 in. and then shrank. Cosmetic, not structural, but it is the reason the hot-install gap runs small.
  • Clip screw stripped out of a PT joist: pilot hole was oversized, or the screw was driven at high RPM into wet PT and spun the threads out. Back the RPM off and re-drive into sound material, or sister blocking under the clip. Do not solve it by swapping in a longer or larger screw than the fastener system lists - an off-spec screw is the same warranty problem as an off-spec clip. Framing should be at 19 percent moisture content or less at install; that is the "dry" grade-stamp threshold (S-DRY or KD-19) the IRC builds its span tables around, and green PT well above it will shrink away from the fastener as it seasons.
  • Board sidewall cracked at the clip: clip overdriven, side gap closed below 3/16 in. The cap depends on the engineered gap to slide; if you pinch it, the cap fractures.

Promenade boards shipped during summer months arrive at warehouse temperatures above 100 F and are already near their maximum installed length. Set them at that temperature and the gaps only open as the deck cools, which is cosmetic. The dangerous version is the reverse: boards that came off a cold truck in winter and got butted tight. Either way, let every load sit on site and reach ambient before you cut, and set the end gap against the temperature the board is at when you set it, not the temperature on the forecast.
