Joist Hanger Selection for Decks

Why this matters

A deck joist hanger is the structural connector between the deck joist and the ledger or rim joist. Wrong hanger for the load = structural failure under design load. The choices are extensive (different sizes, configurations, materials); the wrong choice is one of the leading sources of deck inspection failures. A deck builder who knows the IRC requirements and the manufacturer's specific products produces decks that pass inspection and don't fail under load.

What joist hangers do

Joist hangers:

  • Hold the joist's end to the ledger or rim joist
  • Distribute the load across the connection
  • Provide the structural connection rated for the design load
  • Allow for some lateral movement (within limits)

Without proper hangers:

  • Joists rely only on nails into end-grain (weak)
  • Inadequate connection
  • Eventual failure under load

IRC requirements

The IRC governs joist hanger use:

Required for...

  • All deck joists connecting to ledger boards or beams
  • Hangers must be rated for the load
  • Hangers must be properly installed (correct nails, all holes used)

Specific provisions

  • Hangers must be galvanized (Z-Max or hot-dipped) for typical PT lumber
  • Triple-zinc (G185 / ZMAX) or hot-dip galvanized hangers are acceptable for ACQ and CA-treated lumber in normal exposure; stainless is required for coastal, high-corrosion, and other severe environments
  • All hanger nails must be installed (not skipped)
  • Hanger size must match joist size

Joist hanger types

Face mount (most common)

The hanger is nailed to the face of the ledger. The joist sits in the hanger.

Examples:

  • Simpson Strong-Tie LU (light), HU (heavy), HUS, HUSK series
  • USP THA series

Top mount (less common for decks)

The hanger is nailed from the top down.

Typically used for I-joists and engineered lumber; less common for traditional 2-by deck joists.

Concealed flange

Hides the hanger flange behind the trim. Used for finished decks.

Adjustable (sloped) hanger

Allows the joist to be installed at an angle (for sloped decks or non-perpendicular connections).

Simpson Strong-Tie LSS, USP types.

Hurricane / seismic hanger

Heavier rated; used in high-wind or seismic areas, or under specific local code.

Simpson Strong-Tie hurricane ties, ICC ES rated.

Sizing the hanger

The hanger must match:

Joist size

  • 2x6 joist: 2x6 hanger
  • 2x8 joist: 2x8 hanger
  • 2x10 joist: 2x10 hanger
  • 2x12 joist: 2x12 hanger
  • LVL or I-joist: specific engineered hanger

Load capacity

The hanger has a published allowable download. Verify it exceeds the joist's end reaction. Do not guess the reaction, compute it, because it is smaller than most people expect and the arithmetic is one line:

end reaction = total load (psf) x joist spacing (ft) x span (ft) / 2

Each hanger carries half the joist. For a residential deck at 40 psf live plus 10 psf dead, joists at 16 in on centre (1.33 ft):

  • 12 ft span: 50 x 1.33 x 6 = about 400 lb per hanger
  • 14 ft span: 50 x 1.33 x 7 = about 465 lb
  • 16 ft span: 50 x 1.33 x 8 = about 530 lb

A standard light face-mount hanger with every nail hole filled clears those figures by a wide margin, which is why the capacity check almost never governs a plain field joist. It governs where the load is not uniform: a doubled or tripled joist carrying a beam or a stair stringer, a hanger under a hot tub or a planter, a long girder hung off a ledger, and any skewed or sloped hanger (skewing derates the published capacity). Run the reaction for those, then read the manufacturer's allowable download for the exact model, nail type and lumber species, and confirm it exceeds the reaction.

Type and finish

  • Z-Max / G185 triple-zinc galvanized: the standard call for ACQ and CA-treated lumber in normal exposure
  • Hot-dip galvanized: also acceptable for ACQ and CA in normal exposure
  • Stainless steel: required for coastal, high-corrosion, and other severe exposures, and where the manufacturer or the AHJ calls for it

Note this matches the IRC provisions above. Plain electro-galvanized hardware is not acceptable in modern treated lumber at all; the choice is between triple-zinc or hot-dip in normal exposure and stainless in severe exposure.

Selection by application

Standard residential deck

Fastener requirements

The fastener requirements vary by hanger:

Hanger nails

  • Specific size and type (typically 10d common nail or 16d sinker)
  • Some require special hanger nails
  • All holes in the hanger must be filled

Joist nails

  • Toe-nail the joist to the hanger
  • Specific size and pattern per hanger spec

Through-bolt option

  • Some hangers allow through-bolts instead of (or in addition to) nails for higher capacity

Installation procedure

Step 1: Set the hanger position

  • Mark joist locations on ledger
  • Position hanger at the correct height (joist top matches the deck plan)
  • Tack hanger temporarily

Step 2: Install hanger nails

  • Drive nails into ALL provided holes
  • Use the correct nail type
  • Verify hanger is secure

Step 3: Install joist

  • Slide joist into hanger
  • Verify joist seats properly
  • Toe-nail joist to hanger per spec

Step 4: Verify

  • Joist is fully seated in hanger
  • Hanger is fully nailed
  • No visible gaps

Common joist hanger mistakes

Wrong hanger size

  • 2x8 joist in 2x6 hanger: doesn't fit; joist not supported
  • 2x6 joist in 2x8 hanger: joist drops; gap at the bottom

Hanger not properly nailed

  • Skipping holes: reduced capacity
  • Wrong nail type: doesn't transfer load
  • Bent nails: not secure

Hanger in wrong position

  • Too high: joist too high; deck plane off
  • Too low: joist drops; gap visible

Wrong material for the lumber

  • Standard galvanized in ACQ-treated lumber: corrosion (galvanic reaction)
  • Aluminum-coated in PT lumber: corrosion

Mixed brands

  • Using non-matched fasteners with brand-specific hangers
  • Some manufacturers void warranty on mixed installations

Triple-galvanized vs stainless

For modern pressure-treated lumber:

  • Pre-1990s lumber: chromated copper arsenate (CCA); standard galvanized OK
  • Post-2003 lumber: ACQ-treated; requires triple-zinc OR stainless
  • Best practice: triple-zinc galvanized (Z-Max, ZMAX, or G185) for standard work
  • Coastal or aggressive environment: stainless

The galvanized vs stainless decision matters because galvanic corrosion with modern PT chemicals can fail the hanger faster than the lumber.

Special situations

Connecting joists to existing structure

For deck attached to existing house framing:

  • Verify the band joist or framing can take the new load
  • May need additional structural verification

Sloped deck

  • Use sloped (adjustable) joist hangers
  • Or stagger the joist and use standard hangers

Cantilever joist

  • Joist extends beyond beam
  • Joist hanger at the beam; cantilever supported by joist itself
  • Maximum cantilever per IRC and manufacturer spec

Beam to post connection

  • Different hardware (post base, beam saddle)
  • Specific manufacturer products

Hidden deck (fastener-free top surface)

Hidden clip systems do not change which hanger you use, but they raise the standard the framing has to meet, because a clip cannot pull a board down onto a joist the way a face screw can.

  • The joist plane has to be flat. Every hanger must seat the joist so its top edge lands in one plane with its neighbors and with the ledger. A joist sitting a fraction high on a mis-seated hanger telegraphs straight through to the finished surface, and with clips there is no way to pull it back down. Set every hanger tight to the ledger, fill every nail hole, and check the field with a straightedge before decking goes on.
  • Crowns matter more. Crown all joists the same direction and plane down any high edge before decking. This is worth the extra hour on a clip deck.
  • Every board seam needs real support, hung properly. A butt joint gets a doubled joist or an engineered seam support, and any picture-frame border needs blocking on both sides of the mitre. That blocking is structural and gets a hanger, including skewed hangers where the framing runs at an angle. Toenailed blocking under a border is one of the most common inspection failures on this kind of deck.
  • Expect more connectors than a face-screwed deck. Borders, mitres, and inset patterns all add framing members, and each one needs the correct hanger and the full nail pattern.
  • Bracing carries more of the load. Face-screwed decking ties the frame together to a degree that clips do not, so the diagonal bracing and the lateral connections are doing more work. Do not treat them as optional on a hidden-fastener deck.
  • Tape the joist tops. Clip screws go into the top edge of the joist, which is exactly where water sits. Joist tape over the top edge is standard practice with these systems. Install the hangers first, then tape, and keep the tape from bridging where it would trap water against the hanger.
  • Keep corrosion classes consistent. Hangers, hanger nails, clip screws, and any structural screw in the same assembly should be at the same corrosion rating, and in coastal or severe exposure that means stainless throughout.
  • Plan for access. With no visible fasteners, taking a board up later is a job. If there is wiring, lighting, or an under-deck drainage system, design a removable panel and frame it with hangers so it stays structural.
