Chain Link Fabric Patch and Splice Technique

Why this matters

A chain-link run with one torn or stretched section doesn't need to come down; it needs the damaged diamonds cut out and a matching patch woven back in so the seam disappears into the weave instead of reading as an obvious repair. The diagnosis for whether a section is stretched, torn, or just under-tensioned belongs to a separate reference; this piece assumes that call has already been made and covers the hands-on weaving technique that actually closes the gap. Done wrong, cutting through the diamond instead of unraveling the knuckle, tying a patch on with wraps instead of weaving it in, the repair holds for a season and then the cut ends start working loose one wire at a time, and the customer is back on the phone about the same section.

Match and size the replacement fabric before you cut anything

Confirm gauge, mesh size (the diamond opening measured point to point), and coating type against the existing fabric before pulling a single wire. A mismatched gauge won't weave true: a lighter-gauge patch wire flexes differently than the heavier original wire around it, so the diamonds along the seam distort even when the count lines up. Vinyl-coated fabric needs a coating and color match too, since bare galvanized wire spliced into a black vinyl-coated run reads as an obvious patch from across the yard, not just up close. Skip this check and you find out the mismatch only after the patch is fully woven in, at which point pulling it back out to swap fabric costs more time than the original repair would have.

Count the damaged diamonds width-wise and height-wise at the mesh size you're matching, then add roughly one extra diamond of margin on each side beyond where the damage actually stops, since the unraveling step below needs sound, undamaged diamonds to terminate into and a patch cut exactly to the damaged footprint leaves no margin for that termination. Pull stock fabric in a continuous piece rather than piecing together offcuts for one patch; a seam within a seam doubles the number of weave joints that can work loose and is exactly the shortcut this technique exists to avoid. For a repair spanning more than a couple of line-post bays, confirm stock length against the full span before starting the unravel, since running short mid-weave means either stopping with an open seam overnight or unraveling further than planned to reach a new stock roll's edge.

Unravel the knuckle, don't cut the diamond

Chain-link fabric is one continuous wire woven in a zigzag; the top and bottom edges are finished with a knuckled or twisted selvage that locks the last diamond in place. To remove a damaged section, find the selvage or a tie point at each end of the section you're taking out, and unravel the wire back through its own weave rather than cutting straight across the diamonds. Cutting through the middle of a diamond leaves a raw wire end at every cut point, and each of those ends is free to work loose under the fence's normal flex, unraveling further with every season. Unraveling from a finished edge means every end you're left holding is already a natural termination point the weave was designed around, not a fresh cut fighting to stay put. This step is slower than cutting and it's the one crews skip when they're in a hurry; it's also the difference between a patch that holds for the life of the fence and one that's back on the callback list within a year.

Hazard: both unraveling old wire and trimming a new patch to length leave freshly cut ends that are sharp enough to cut through a work glove's palm on contact, not just scratch it. Handle a cut end by its blunt side where possible, and treat every wire tail on the ground around the repair as sharp until it's swept up; a stray cut length left in the grass is a common source of a puncture on a return visit that has nothing to do with the fence itself.

Weaving the patch in

Chain-link is woven from a single wire in a continuous spiral, over one strand, under the next, all the way down the line. To weave a patch in, start the new fabric's wire at one exposed end left by the unraveling step and spiral it into the existing weave the same direction the original fabric runs, checking every few diamonds that the pattern is staying consistent rather than drifting into an over-under sequence that doesn't match. A patch woven in the wrong spiral direction will look correct for the first several diamonds and then visibly bind or gap as the mismatch compounds down the row; catching that early, by checking the pattern every few diamonds rather than weaving the whole patch and checking once at the end, saves unweaving a long run of wire. Align the patch's diamond size to the existing weave as you go rather than at the end; a patch woven slightly loose or slightly tight compared to its neighbors telegraphs as a visible seam even when the gauge and color match perfectly.

A patch spanning more than one line-post bay needs the surrounding fabric slackened before weaving, not fought against at full tension the whole time. Hook a come-along or a fence stretcher to the fabric a bay or two beyond each end of the repair and take up just enough pull to hold the surrounding weave steady without adding new tension into the zone you're working, checking that the patch area itself stays slack enough to manipulate by hand. Weaving against fabric that's still under its original working tension makes every diamond fight you as you spiral the new wire through, and the patch ends up uneven even when the weave direction and diamond size are otherwise correct.

Hazard: fabric held under a come-along or stretcher is stored energy, and a hook that slips or a stretcher bar that lets go under load can snap back hard enough to cause a real injury. Keep your body out of the direct line the fabric or hardware would travel if it released, and if a hook shows any sign of walking off its bite during the pull, stop and reseat it before continuing rather than adding more tension to a hold that's already slipping.

Fastening the seam with hog rings

Once the weave is continuous across the repair, secure the top and bottom edges of the patch to the top rail and tension wire with hog rings at the same interval the rest of the run uses, commonly every 24 inches, and tie the patch to any line post it crosses at the tighter interval line posts get on a new installation, commonly every 12 to 15 inches, since that's the attachment that actually carries the fabric rather than just dressing the edge. Crimp each hog ring fully closed with the ring pliers rather than a partial squeeze; a ring left slightly open will work itself loose under the same seasonal flex that damaged the original section. Work the ring pattern in one direction across the patch rather than jumping around, so you can see at a glance which attachment points are done and which aren't, rather than relying on memory partway through a long seam.

Re-tension after the patch, not before

A patch woven into an already-tensioned run doesn't need the whole section restretched, but the patch area itself needs a light check: sight along the top rail and the tension wire through the repaired section and confirm neither shows a dip at the seam. If the run's overall tension was part of what prompted the call, stretched fabric elsewhere on the same run rather than just the one damaged section, that's a separate tensioning pass with a fence stretcher across the terminal posts, done after the patch is fully woven and fastened, not before; stretching against an unfinished weave can pull the new wire out of alignment before the last hog ring goes in.

Worked example

A residential dog-run chain-link fence takes a branch strike that tears a roughly 3-foot by 2-foot section, 11.5 gauge galvanized fabric, 48-inch height, one line post inside the damaged zone. The damaged area spans about 14 diamonds wide by 9 rows tall at this mesh size. Matching fabric is confirmed on the truck stock, same gauge, same galvanized finish, no coating match needed.

The tech identifies the nearest sound selvage points above and below the damaged zone and unravels the wire back to those points on both sides rather than cutting through the last intact diamond, leaving four clean wire ends to work from. The replacement patch, cut slightly oversized from the roll, is woven in starting at the bottom selvage, spiraling in the same over-under direction as the surrounding weave, checked every three or four diamonds against the neighboring rows for consistent diamond size. At the line post crossing the damaged zone, the patch is tied at the tighter line-post interval rather than the wider rail interval, since that post falls inside the repair.

Once the weave closes cleanly on all four sides, hog rings go in at the top rail and tension wire at the standard interval, and the line post gets its own ties at the tighter spacing. Sighting along the rail and tension wire through the patch shows no dip relative to the sound fabric on either side; no additional restretch is needed since the rest of the run tested sound during the initial walk.

Verify before closing the ticket

Run a hand check across the patched diamonds, pressing gently to confirm no loose wire ends remain free to catch on clothing or an animal's coat, since a technically complete weave can still leave a stray tail if a cut end was missed during the unraveling step. Confirm every hog ring is fully crimped, not just present, by testing each with light finger pressure rather than a visual check alone; a ring that looks closed can still be sprung open enough to slip under load. Sight the full run one more time, not just the patch, since the branch strike or the repair work itself can have disturbed tension at an adjacent, undamaged section that's easy to miss when attention has been on the patch the whole visit.
