Why this matters

A new-install stain job carries decisions a recoat never faces, what to finish before assembly closes the access, whether the wood has actually dried enough to take a film, and constraints a recoat doesn't share, fresh concrete nearby, hardware installed days ago and easy to gum shut, a customer expecting to use their new fence within the week. Decide what gets finished before assembly closes it off

The back face of a board-on-board or shadowbox picket, and the mating edges of any tongue-and-groove board, is reachable with a sprayer or brush right up until the next board goes up beside it, and unreachable the moment it does. Where the design allows it, pre-finish those faces on sawhorses before hanging: both faces and both end grains coated, stacked with stickers between layers so the coats can flash without touching, and each board's orientation marked so the finished face lands where it belongs on the run. The reasoning is not cosmetic. End grain absorbs and releases moisture many times faster than a flat face, so an unfinished cut end is where a picket starts to check and split first, and a back face that never gets a coat is the one facing the yard's own humidity and sprinkler overspray. Verify the wood is actually ready, don't trust the calendar

A film-forming or heavily pigmented stain applied over wood that hasn't dried out from milling or pressure treatment traps moisture under the coating, and the coating blisters and peels within a season regardless of how well it was applied. Time on the ground is a poor proxy for readiness because it depends on species, board thickness, and the week's weather; a moisture reading is not. Drive a pin-type moisture meter into a representative board on the shaded side of the run and one on the sun side, since exposure changes the reading more than most crews expect. Most exterior penetrating stains publish a moisture ceiling in the 15 to 19 percent by-weight range; confirm the number on your specific product's data sheet rather than assuming the figure that applied to the last job's product still applies to this one. Deal with mill glaze, not a weathered fence's dirt and mildew

New, smooth-faced lumber often carries mill glaze, a burnished, semi-sealed surface left by the planer that resists stain absorption and produces blotchy, streaky coverage when stain is sprayed straight onto it. Fresh concrete footings stain and etch under overspray, and unlike a weathered patio you can't sand or pressure-wash a footing clean without also attacking the wood post next to it, so mask footings or hold the stain line back from grade. Freshly installed hinges, latches, and hardware finish fasteners gum up when overspray dries in a pivot point, and a hinge that binds by the first cold snap reads to the customer as a hardware defect, not a finishing mistake, so mask hardware or back it out and reinstall after the coat cures. Sod, mulch, and plantings placed the same week as the fence are softer targets for drift than an established yard, so work with wind at your back and drop cloths under any section within a few feet of new landscaping.

Apply in a sequence that reads as one uniform job

Work sections you can backbrush before the leading edge starts to flash, since spraying the full run and circling back to backbrush afterward leaves a film on top rather than working the stain into the wood, and the sequence for a new install matters more than for a recoat because every board is the same age and absorbs at the same rate, so any inconsistency in technique shows uniformly rather than blending into an already-weathered surface. Set the cure window before handoff, not before it looks dry

Surface-dry and cured are different states, and a stain that's dry to the touch within a few hours can still be days from the full cure its data sheet describes. Worked example

A 220 foot board-on-board cedar privacy run, mixed sun and shade exposure along a property line that runs partly under mature trees, semi-transparent stain specified per the product comparison the wood preservation article covers.

About 140 pickets get pre-staining on both faces and both end grains on sawhorses before hanging, since the board-on-board pattern buries the back face of every other picket the moment the front course goes up. Stacked with stickers, they dry two full days before assembly starts.

Fresh footings from four days earlier are masked at grade with tape and a drop cloth rather than relying on stain-line discipline alone. Hinges on the single walk gate are backed out and set aside during the application pass, reinstalled once the coat is dry to the touch.

Application runs section by section, spray followed immediately by backbrushing four to five boards at a time in the sun-exposed run, closer to a full eight-board panel at a stretch in the shaded run once its turn comes.

Cure window: the sun-exposed sections clear the 24-hour floor the same week; the shaded run, finished three days later, has its own 24-hour floor tracked separately so the gate isn't handed back for use before its own coat has cured, not the job's average.

How to verify the job is done right

Walk the finished run in full daylight and check for blotchy or glossy patches, which flag a missed mill-glaze prep or an uneven wet edge. Confirm the back face of a sample of board-on-board pickets actually carries a coat, since a missed pre-finish pass is the defect most likely to go unnoticed until the fence is fully assembled. Operate the gate hardware to confirm nothing binds or drags from overspray. Check the footing lines and any nearby hardscape for stain transfer.
