Gate Hardware Sizing

Why this matters

A fence gate is the part that fails first. Wood gates sag; metal gates rust at hinges; vinyl gates warp; latches break. Most failures trace to undersized hardware: hinges rated for too-light a load, latches not designed for the gate weight. A contractor who sizes the hardware correctly produces gates that last; one who uses bin-bargain hardware produces callbacks within a year.

Hinge sizing

The hinge supports the gate's weight. Per hinge:

A typical pedestrian gate needs 2 to 3 hinges:

• 2 hinges: gate up to 50 lb (small light gate)
• 3 hinges: gate 50 to 150 lb (most pedestrian)
• 4 hinges: heavier gates

For larger gates: per hinge load = gate weight / number of hinges. Match hinge rating to that load.

Hinge types

• Strap hinge: most common; long strap rotates on a bolt
• Tee hinge: T-shaped; for lighter applications
• Heavy-duty drive gate hinge: for vehicle gates
• Self-closing spring hinge: for pool gates; meets safety code

Hinge mounting

• Multiple bolts (typically 3 to 5 per hinge)
• Through-bolts preferred (not screws into wood)
• Into solid material (post)

Latch sizing

Latch holds the gate closed:

Latch height

Per IRC and pool codes:

• Standard fence: 36 to 42 inch from ground
• Pool fence latch: 54 inches is a threshold, not a flat minimum. Put the release at 54 inches or higher and you are done. Put it lower and the code adds conditions: the release goes on the pool side, at least 3 inches below the top of the gate, and the gate and barrier carry no opening greater than 1/2 inch within 18 inches of the release. Read the adopted pool code before you tell a customer their latch has to move

Sag prevention

A gate naturally wants to sag at the latch end:

Diagonal brace

• Diagonal lumber from top of latch side to bottom of hinge side
• Provides geometric resistance to sag
• Standard on wood gates

Z-frame

• Top horizontal + diagonal + bottom horizontal
• Common for wood gates
• Allows for picket facing

Steel anti-sag kit

• Steel cable from top hinge corner to bottom latch corner
• Adjustable turnbuckle to tighten
• Common solution for sagging gates

Metal gate frame

• Metal frame within wood / vinyl gate
• Prevents geometric racking
• Premium approach

Specific gate types

Pedestrian gate (residential typical)

Components:

• 2 hinges (4 inch heavy strap)
• Thumb latch + handle
• Diagonal brace
• Drop pin (for closed position stability)

Cost: modest hardware

Vehicle drive gate (12 to 16 ft, typically two leaves)

Components:

• 4 to 6 hinges (heavy duty)
• Drop bolt latch
• Cane bolt (vertical bolt locking each leaf to ground)
• Drop rod hardware
• Possibly automated opener

Cost: moderate hardware

Pool gate (per code)

Components per the pool barrier requirements the jurisdiction has adopted (IRC Section R326 points to the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code for these):

• Self-closing hinge
• Self-latching latch, with the release either at 54 inches or higher, or lower with the pool-side conditions above
• Gate swings outward, away from the pool
• Latch release on the pool side
• No opening in the gate or barrier that passes a 4 inch sphere

Cost: moderate hardware

Gate with electronic opener

• Manual hinges
• Manual latch (sometimes)
• Electric opener motor
• Control system (keypad, remote)

Cost: the opener and controls dominate; the gate hardware is a rounding error next to them

Hardware material

For longevity:

For coastal: stainless or aluminum. For typical residential: galvanized standard. For premium: stainless or brass.

Installation principles

Hinges on the post

• Both hinges on the same post (one on each end is wrong for swinging gate)
• Hinge post must be heavier than other posts
• Bolt-through if possible

Latch on the opposing post

• Lighter loads at latch
• Standard post acceptable

Gate opening direction

• Standard: gate swings out from the home / yard
• Reverses for pool gate (swings away from pool)
• Check code requirements

Drop pin / drop rod

For larger gates:

• Vertical bolt or rod that drops into a sleeve in the ground
• Locks the gate in closed position
• Prevents wind from blowing gate open

Latch mechanisms specifically

Hook and eye

Cheapest; least secure; for very light residential

Thumb latch

Standard residential; pulls or pushes thumb mechanism to release

Magnetic latch

Premium; magnet-based; modern aesthetic

Self-latching gate latch (pool code)

Specific code requirement:

• Latches automatically when the gate swings shut, with no one touching it
• Cannot be released without a deliberate motion
• Governed by the adopted pool barrier code, not by ASTM F2200. F2200 is the automated vehicular gate construction standard and has nothing to say about a pool barrier

Wood gate frame

• 2x4 frame with diagonal
• Pickets attached
• Standard approach

Steel frame (within wood gate)

• Steel angle iron frame
• Wood pickets attached
• Doesn't sag

Vinyl gate frame

• Vinyl extrusion
• Pre-fabricated typically
• Standard approach for vinyl fence

Aluminum gate frame

• Aluminum profile
• Lightweight
• Some aesthetic options

Sag prevention math

For diagonal brace effectiveness:

• Brace must run from top hinge corner to bottom latch corner
• Not just decoration
• Resists the geometric racking force

For anti-sag kit:

• Steel cable + turnbuckle
• Tighten to keep gate square
• Re-tension periodically (every 1 to 3 years)

Common gate hardware errors

Hinges undersized

• Most common error
• Gate sags within months
• Re-do typically

Too few hinges

• 2 hinges on a heavy gate
• Concentrated load on top hinge
• Eventually fails

Wrong material for environment

• Standard galvanized in coastal: rusts in years
• Wood hinge mount: deteriorates

Forgot diagonal brace

• Wood gate without diagonal: sags

Latch at wrong height for pool code

• Pool gate fails inspection
• Customer must redo

Hinges on the wrong side

• Gate doesn't swing properly
• Re-do hardware
