Invisible Pet Fence Install

Why this matters

In-ground pet containment systems sell to homeowners who do not want a visible fence, who live with HOA restrictions on fencing, or who have a yard layout that makes physical fencing impractical (waterfront, large acreage). The contractor who installs the system is also the one the homeowner calls when the dog escapes, when the collar stops working, or when the transmitter trips a GFCI in a thunderstorm. Most "pet fence" failures are not the dog's fault, they are training shortcuts or layout errors made at install. Doing this right means installing the wire to a depth that survives lawn maintenance, setting the transmitter to a signal width that gives a meaningful correction zone, and walking the homeowner through a real training regimen before you leave the site.

Survey the property before you trench

Walk the perimeter with the homeowner. Identify:

The dog. Breed, weight, temperament, age. A 90 lb headstrong working breed needs a different collar (higher correction level), a wider correction zone (signal field), and a more rigorous training program than a 15 lb companion dog.

The boundary. Where exactly does the customer want the dog to stop? Mark the line with marking flags every 10 feet. Customers consistently say "out to the property line" then realize after install that they wanted to keep the dog 5 feet inside the property to prevent fence-line aggression with the neighbor's dog. Settle this before you trench.

Existing utilities. Call 811 a minimum of 2 working days before the trench. Even though pet fence wire is typically buried 1 to 3 inches deep, your trencher can catch a shallow buried cable, sprinkler line, or fiber drop. The call is free and the locate is mandatory in every state.

Crossings. Driveways and walks need the wire to pass under. Plan to either cut a saw kerf in the concrete (most homeowners object), thread the wire through an existing expansion joint (best when available), or run the wire up over the driveway in a tight loop (acceptable only on private gravel drives). Asphalt drives can be sawcut and patched cleanly.

Loop returns. The transmitter is a closed-loop system. The wire goes out, around the perimeter, and back. The return wire must run a different path back to the transmitter (typically twisted together with the outgoing wire only at the transmitter return leg) so the magnetic fields cancel where you do not want a correction.

Wire selection and depth

Specify the wire the transmitter manufacturer recommends. Most quality systems (Invisible Fence Brand, PetSafe Pro, SportDOG In-Ground) use 14 to 20 gauge polyethylene-jacketed solid copper. The jacket protects against soil corrosion; spliced or damaged wire becomes the failure point.

Bury depth: 1 to 3 inches below sod. Deeper buries the signal further from the dog and may require turning up the transmitter signal width, which reduces the precision of the boundary. Shallower risks lawn aeration tines or core aerators severing the wire.

Across landscape beds: lay on the soil surface and cover with mulch. The bed mulch acts as protection and the wire is easy to locate and repair if a perennial is dug up.

Across lawn: trench with a hand-operated edger or a power trencher. Most installers use a dedicated pet-fence trencher (PetSafe, Innotek branded) that cuts a 1 inch wide kerf to 2 inches deep at walking speed. Drop the wire into the kerf and close with a roller. Sod heals over the kerf within 2 to 3 weeks.

Splices: solder + heat-shrink + outdoor wire nut (gel-filled, like a 3M DBR/Y) at every splice. NEVER twist and tape; soil moisture wicks into the splice and corrodes the conductors within a season. A single bad splice can take the entire loop offline.

Transmitter siting

The transmitter is a wall-mounted plug-in unit roughly the size of a thermostat. Site requirements:

Indoor location, dry, accessible. Garage wall, basement utility wall, or interior closet on an exterior wall.

A 120V outlet within reach of the transmitter's power cord. NEVER use an extension cord; the transmitter draws minimal power but the connection needs to be permanent.

GFCI compatibility. Some transmitters have a slight ground-leakage current that nuisance-trips a GFCI. Test the transmitter on the planned outlet before final mounting; if it trips, find a non-GFCI dedicated circuit, OR a GFCI replacement rated for the slight leakage.

Avoid metal structures. Mounting the transmitter on or near a steel I-beam, large electrical panel, or HVAC unit can detune the signal output. Maintain 18 inches clearance from large metal.

The loop wire enters the transmitter at the two terminals. The outgoing leg goes to the boundary; the return leg comes back; the two legs at the transmitter twist together and run along the wall to where they split for the boundary path. Twisted pairs at the entry zone do not generate a correction field, which is how you get the dog from the inside of the boundary to the dog door without correction.

Setting signal width

Signal width is the radius (in feet) from the wire where the collar triggers a correction. Wider signal width means the dog has more "warning beep" zone and more time to retreat from the boundary, but it also narrows the usable yard by 2x the signal width on each side.

Typical settings:

Small dog (under 25 lb): 3 to 5 feet signal width. Medium dog (25 to 60 lb): 5 to 8 feet. Large dog (60+ lb): 8 to 12 feet.

Set the transmitter signal width during install. Verify by walking a test collar across the boundary at multiple points; the collar should beep at the outer edge of the signal field and shock at roughly half that distance from the wire. Adjust signal width until the actual field width matches the homeowner's intent.

Collar fit and battery

The collar must contact the dog's neck through two metal probes (long probes for long-haired dogs, short for short-haired). Probe length: long enough to make skin contact through the coat, short enough not to push into the skin. Fit: snug enough that the probes do not slip away from the skin, loose enough that you can slide one finger under the collar at the throat.

Check fit DAILY for the first week. Probes too tight against the skin for 24+ hours straight cause pressure necrosis (a real veterinary injury, looks like a burn, frequently misdiagnosed as a shock injury when it is actually a fit problem). Recommend the homeowner remove the collar at night.

Battery: know which chemistry the collar takes before you leave, because a dead collar is the single most common cause of a "the fence stopped working" call and the homeowner will not know it happened. Some collars use a proprietary cell, some a common lithium coin or cylindrical cell, some are rechargeable. Write the part number on the transmitter housing with a paint pen and leave spares. Tell the homeowner to test the collar weekly with the test light that came in the box, held to the probes while walking the boundary. Most low-battery indicators warn late, and none of them warn the dog.

Training the dog, which is the part that actually contains it

Do not skip this and do not hand the homeowner a pamphlet. The wire and the collar are containment hardware; the training is the containment. A dog that has not been taught the boundary will run through it once, discover that the correction stops on the far side, and learn exactly the wrong lesson.

Set the flags at 10 foot spacing on the boundary line at install and leave them up through the whole program. The dog learns the flags first and the signal second.

Days 1 to 3, tone only. Collar on, correction off or at tone-only. Dog on a leash. Walk the dog toward the boundary until the collar tones, then turn and lead the dog back into the yard with an upbeat "yard" or similar cue and praise. Three or four short sessions a day, a few minutes each. The dog is learning that the tone means turn around, and the owner is the one doing the turning.

Days 4 to 7, correction introduced. Correction on at the lowest level that produces a real response (a head turn, a startle, not a yelp). Still on leash. Let the dog take one correction, then lead it back into the yard and praise. If the dog yelps, panics, or will not go in the yard afterward, the level is too high. Turn it down and rebuild.

Days 8 to 14, distraction proofing. This is the step everyone skips and the reason dogs bolt. On a long line, have a helper stand outside the boundary with the thing that dog cannot resist: another dog, a person it loves, a thrown ball, a bicycle. The dog has to choose the boundary over the temptation while you still have a line on it. If it will not hold under distraction on a line, it will not hold off leash.

Weeks 3 and 4, supervised off leash and flag removal. Off leash only with the owner outside watching. Pull every other flag at the start of week 3 and the rest by the end of week 4. If the dog tests the line after flags come down, put flags back and go back a stage.

Rules to state out loud and put in writing before you leave:

  • Never call the dog across the boundary, ever. One recall through the line teaches the dog the boundary is negotiable when the owner says so.
  • To leave the yard, take the collar off and leash the dog through the line. Do not let the dog learn that walking through a correction is survivable.
  • The system contains the dog. It does not keep anything OUT. Other dogs, wildlife, and people walk straight in, and a dog cornered inside its own boundary cannot retreat.
  • It does not work during a power outage or with a dead collar battery, and the dog does not know that.
  • A dog that has already run through the line once needs the training restarted, not the correction level raised.
