Leaning Post Reset Standard Procedure

Purpose

This SOP guarantees that a post already identified as a reset candidate, meaning the shop's method decision matrices have already ruled out sister, splice, and replace, comes out of the ground, gets its footing corrected for the actual cause of the lean, and goes back in plumb, on line, and load-bearing before the crew leaves that post. Skipped or rushed, a reset produces the single most common repeat call a fence shop takes: a post that reads plumb the day of the visit and is leaning again within a season, because the crew corrected the angle in the ground the post was already sitting in rather than correcting what was wrong with that ground. This procedure exists because the method decision and the physical reset are two separate moments, often a day or more apart between quote and return visit, and the ground can tell a different story once a shovel is actually in it.

Scope

Covers the physical reset of a single line, end, corner, or gate post already selected for the reset method, from re-confirming that selection at the post through backfill, cure, and final verification. Procedure

  1. Re-confirm the reset selection at the post itself, not from the original quote. Probe the post at and just below grade with an awl on two faces. Acceptance: the point sinks less than about a quarter inch, the figure the shop's method matrix uses to separate sound from punky wood, on both faces. Wrong looks like accepting the original quote's call because a return trip is scheduled and nobody wants to re-open the decision, when the post has kept deteriorating in the days or weeks since it was quoted. Stop rule: any face failing the probe halts the reset and routes the post to the failing-post method matrix for a fresh call; do not reset a post that no longer meets the reset criteria just because reset is what's written on the work order. Hazard: none at this step, it's a hand tool check.

  2. Confirm the utility locate ticket and hand-dig log are complete for this exact post location before any excavation. Acceptance: ticket number and hand-dig completion entry present on the job record for this post. Wrong looks like proceeding on a locate pulled for the original install years earlier, treating an old ticket as still valid for a repair dig. Stop rule: no current, complete locate record for this post halts excavation until the utility locate and hand-dig standard is run for this location. Hazard: excavating without a current locate risks striking a line installed or relocated since the original fence went in; this step exists specifically to catch that.

  3. Support the adjacent panel or fabric run before freeing the post: release tension on a chain-link or wire run tied to this post, or brace a rail-hung panel so its own weight doesn't rest on the post being freed. Acceptance: adjacent tension released or braced, confirmed by hand-checking that the post moves freely without resistance from the panel before digging begins. Wrong looks like starting to excavate around a post that's still carrying live tension from the run on either side, so the post moves unpredictably the moment its footing loses support. Stop rule: if tension can't be safely released without a second person or a come-along, stop and get the second set of hands before continuing. Hazard: a post released from its footing while still under fabric or panel tension can kick sideways; keep clear of the post's path of travel while freeing it.

  4. Excavate around the footing, trench sized to expose the full footing without undercutting the surrounding soil beyond what's needed to work. Acceptance: footing fully exposed on at least two sides, trench walls holding without slumping. Wrong looks like a narrow trench that leaves the crew reaching blind under the footing, which is how a footing gets rocked loose unevenly and cracks the post at grade instead of freeing it clean. Stop rule: any trench wall showing signs of undercutting or collapse gets widened or shored before work continues; do not keep digging under a wall that's already failing. Hazard: a trench beside a footing still bearing load can slump suddenly once that load transfers; nobody works with hands or feet under the footing's overhang.

  5. Break out and remove the old footing material, then probe the post's buried section a second time now that it's exposed, since a post can read sound at grade and still be gone six to eight inches down where the first probe couldn't reach. Acceptance: buried post face probed at multiple points along its embedded length, same quarter-inch soundness standard as step 1. Wrong looks like assuming the buried post matches what the surface probe showed, when soil moisture and soil contact are exactly what accelerates rot and corrosion below grade compared to at the surface. Stop rule: any buried section failing the probe halts the reset immediately; escalate to replace rather than resetting a post whose hidden section will not hold the correction. Hazard: broken concrete edges are sharp and the chunks are heavy; gloves on, lift with legs, not back, and clear spoil away from the open trench as you go.

  6. Correct the actual cause identified in the original diagnosis, not just the angle. For a shallow or undersized footing, deepen and widen per the frost depth your local authority having jurisdiction has confirmed in writing for this job, never a figure carried over from a different job's soil or region. For a washed-out or drainage-caused footing, add a gravel base at the bottom before any concrete goes in. Acceptance: new footing depth and diameter match the confirmed local figures, gravel base present where drainage was the identified cause. Wrong looks like re-pouring the same shallow footing the post just came out of because it's faster, which corrects the lean today and reproduces the original cause by next winter. Stop rule: a footing correction that doesn't match the diagnosed cause doesn't proceed; go back to the diagnosis before pouring. Hazard: none new at this step beyond the excavation hazards already controlled above.

  7. Replumb the post on two adjacent faces against a level, brace it independently of the fresh footing, and backfill with concrete per the product's stated set time, fast-set commonly 20 to 40 minutes initial cure, standard mix 24 to 48 hours initial cure, confirmed against the bag in hand rather than assumed. Acceptance: level's bubble centered within its lines on both faces, temporary brace independent of the post itself, concrete crowned to shed water away from the post. Wrong looks like eyeballing plumb against the neighboring posts, which just matches this post to whatever lean its neighbors already carry. Stop rule: if the post will not hold plumb under a light hand check after bracing, re-brace before pouring; do not pour around a post you're still holding straight by hand. Hazard: fresh concrete is caustic on contact; gloves stay on through mixing and placement, and any skin contact gets rinsed promptly.

  8. After the stated initial cure window, re-check plumb on both faces and restore the adjacent panel or fabric tension to its original setting, not to whatever the temporary release from step 3 left it at. Acceptance: post plumb confirmed a second time post-cure, adjacent tension restored and confirmed by hand or gauge to match the run's original tension. Wrong looks like walking away once the post looks straight and leaving the released tension for a next visit, which leaves the whole run sagging at that bay until someone comes back. Stop rule: a post that has shifted out of plumb during cure gets corrected within the mix's set window; past that window, pull and restart rather than forcing a set mix. Hazard: none new, this is a verification pass.

The record this produces

The reset log ties a post location, the diagnosed cause, the footing correction made, and both plumb checks, pre-cure and post-cure, to a date and a technician. A shop reviewing a season of these logs watches for the same footing cause recurring on the same run or the same soil type, which points at an undersized standard footing spec for that ground rather than at any one post's bad luck, and routes that finding back into the multi-post triage process for the rest of the run.

Worked pass, with a step that failed

A single line post on a wood privacy run, quoted for reset after a frost-heave lean identified during the original walk-through, the method decision matrix confirming reset over sister or replace.

Step 1: awl probe at grade on both faces reads sound, under the quarter-inch standard. Reset selection confirmed at the post.

Step 2: locate ticket from four days prior on file, hand-dig log complete for this post location.

Step 3: adjacent panel tension released by unfastening the rail on one side, post confirmed to move freely by hand before digging.

Step 4: trench excavated on two sides, footing fully exposed, walls holding.

Step 5: old footing broken out and removed. A second probe on the now-exposed buried section finds the wood punky six inches below the original grade-level probe point, sinking well past the quarter-inch standard, a zone the surface probe in step 1 never reached. Fail. Stop rule taken: reset halted at this post, escalated to the crew lead, who reclassifies the post to replace under the failing-post method matrix rather than resetting a post with a compromised buried section.

Steps 6 through 8 do not run as reset steps for this post; it proceeds instead through a full replace, using a new footing built to the same corrected depth this reset would have used, and the panel tension released in step 3 is restored once the new post is set and cured.
