Pool Barrier Gate Self-Closing Verification Standard
Purpose
A pool barrier gate that self-closes and self-latches on the day of final inspection and then gets adjusted "looser" six months later on a service call is a barrier that failed the day it was loosened, not the day someone finally notices. This procedure exists so that every visit to a gate serving pool-barrier duty, whether the job is a new install or an unrelated hinge callback, ends with the self-closing and self-latching function verified and recorded, because a gate that closes and latches "most of the time" is the specific failure mode behind a drowning: it works when the adult watches it close and fails the one time a child follows it back open.
Scope
Covers verifying swing direction, self-closing performance, self-latching function, latch-release height and offset, barrier height on the gate leaf, and opening/clearance dimensions on any gate that forms part of a required residential or light-commercial pool barrier. Applies any time a technician works on such a gate for any reason, including a general sag or hardware callback that was not booked as pool work; identifying the gate as pool-barrier duty at step 1 pulls the whole visit under this SOP regardless of what the ticket says.
Does not cover general gate-sag diagnosis by cause (the gate sagging decision tree owns that) or hardware sizing and hinge selection (the gate hardware sizing reference owns that); this SOP assumes the mechanical repair is done and verifies the pool-specific function on top of it. Does not restate a single jurisdiction's code numbers as universal; the Florida pool barrier reference is the worked example for one state's adopted figures, and this SOP gates every dimension to whatever code the local authority has adopted. Does not cover an automated gate's UL 325 entrapment devices; run that SOP in addition where the pool gate is also motorized.

Procedure
1. Determine whether this gate is part of a required pool barrier before touching it. A gate qualifies if it is in the fence, wall, or enclosure line that separates the pool from the house or the yard, regardless of why the technician is actually there. Acceptance: a written yes/no call, made before any repair work starts. Wrong looks like fixing a sagging hinge on a gate that happens to face a pool and closing the ticket without running the rest of this procedure. Stop rule: any "yes" pulls every remaining step into the visit; the ticket does not get closed as a simple hardware repair.
2. Verify swing direction. With the gate at rest, confirm it opens outward, away from the pool side, and that the hinge and stop hardware physically prevent it from being forced to swing the other way. Acceptance: full outward swing confirmed, no inward travel possible. Wrong looks like a gate that swings both ways because a stop was never installed, which lets a child leaning on it from the pool side push it open into the enclosure. Stop rule: any inward-swing capability is a fail; correct the stop hardware before continuing.
3. Verify the barrier height and opening size on the closed gate. Measure the gate leaf's height on the outside face and check for any opening in the gate or between the gate and the latch post against the sphere-passage limit, using the height and sphere figures the adopted pool barrier code sets for this jurisdiction (commonly 48 inches minimum height and no opening passing a 4 inch sphere under IRC Appendix G and the ISPSC, but confirm the edition and any local amendment before citing a number to the customer). Acceptance: measured height at or above the adopted minimum, no opening exceeding the adopted sphere limit anywhere on the leaf or at the latch-side gap. Wrong looks like measuring the fence height a few feet away and assuming the gate matches it; a gate leaf is very often shorter than its neighboring panels. Stop rule: any shortfall is a fail regardless of how the rest of the gate performs.
4. Verify bottom clearance under the closed gate. Measure the gap between the bottom of the gate and the ground or deck surface at its lowest point. Acceptance: clearance at or below the adopted maximum for the surface type (a tighter figure on grade, a looser one on a hard deck or above-ground pool structure per the code adopted locally). Wrong looks like measuring at the hinge side, where wear is lowest, instead of at the point of maximum sag. Stop rule: excess clearance is a fail even if the latch and closer both test correctly; a gap a small child can slide under defeats the barrier regardless of how well it latches.
5. Function-test the self-closing hardware from the fully open position, three cycles. Open the gate fully, release it without assistance, and time whether it closes and comes to rest against the latch post on its own, unassisted, all three times. Acceptance: full closure from full open on three consecutive releases, no manual push needed on any cycle. Wrong looks like testing only from a partly open position, which a worn closer can still swing shut from even after it has lost the power to close from fully open. Stop rule: any cycle that stalls before full closure is a fail; do not average it against two good cycles. Hazard: a self-closing gate under spring or closer tension moves with real force on release, and this test runs at a barrier that exists to keep a child away from a pool; clear children, pets, and bystanders from the swing path before every one of the three releases, not just the first, and if anyone is in or near the pool unsupervised, stop and secure adult supervision before releasing the gate again.
6. Function-test self-latching on each of the same three cycles. On each release in step 5, confirm the latch engages on its own the instant the gate reaches the closed position, with no lift, slam, or hand-set needed to seat it. Acceptance: audible or visible engagement on all three cycles, confirmed by attempting to pull the gate back open without releasing the latch. Wrong looks like a gate that closes flush but needs a light hand push to seat the latch, which is exactly the motion a child's own push on the gate will not reliably reproduce. Stop rule: any cycle that closes but does not positively latch is a fail. Hazard: the pull-test against the latch briefly reopens the barrier if the latch does not hold; keep the same swing-path clearance from step 5 in effect through this test, and pull toward yourself, never toward the pool side.
7. Verify latch-release height and the pool-side offset where the release sits low. Measure the release mechanism's height above the bottom of the gate. Where it sits at or above the adopted threshold (commonly 54 inches under IRC Appendix G and the ISPSC, confirm locally), no further check is needed. Where it sits below that threshold, confirm the release is mounted on the pool side of the gate and that no opening larger than the adopted small-gap limit (commonly 1/2 inch) exists within the adopted reach distance (commonly 18 inches) of the release. Acceptance: release height documented, and where below threshold, pool-side mounting and the small-gap condition both confirmed. Wrong looks like confirming the release is on the pool side and stopping there, without checking the gap condition that makes the pool-side mounting meaningful. Stop rule: a low release with either condition unmet is a fail.
8. Resolve any fail before leaving, or put the interim precaution in place. Where every prior step passes, sign the record. Where any step fails and the repair can be completed on this visit (a closer tension adjustment, a latch replacement), make the repair and re-run steps 5 through 7 from a clean cycle before signing. Where the repair cannot be completed today, do not leave the barrier open: temporarily secure the gate in the closed position with a mechanical restraint the homeowner cannot casually defeat (not a rope or a bungee), and get the homeowner's signed acknowledgment of the finding and the interim measure before leaving. Acceptance: either a full pass on re-test, or a documented interim restraint plus signed acknowledgment. Wrong looks like leaving a "we'll get the part next week" verbal promise with the gate still swinging free. Stop rule: no interim restraint installed, no departure from a failed pool gate under any circumstance, including a customer who insists it's fine. Hazard: the interim restraint is itself pool-adjacent work and re-running steps 5 through 7 after a repair carries the same swing-path clearance those steps require; confirm the restraint cannot be defeated by a child's own strength, not just an adult's casual push, before signing off on it as the interim barrier.
The record this produces
One record per visit: the step 1 barrier determination, height and opening measurements, bottom-clearance measurement, all three self-close and self-latch cycle results, the measured release height and, where applicable, the pool-side offset and gap check, the final pass or fail call, and for any fail, the interim restraint and the signed acknowledgment. The office holds it for re-verification scheduling and as the record that answers "was this checked" if the gate is ever involved in an incident.
One run, including the stop that fired
Job: a hinge-tightening callback on a side-yard fence, not booked as pool work. Step 1 caught it: the fence gate opens directly into a pool enclosure, so the full procedure ran. Steps 2 through 4 passed: outward swing, 54 inch gate leaf height, no opening over the adopted 4 inch sphere limit, clearance under the gate at 1.5 inches.
Step 5 fired the stop. On the first release from fully open, the gate coasted to within 4 inches of the post and stopped short, the original hinge-sag complaint. Two more releases produced the same result. That is a fail regardless of what step 6 would show, so the latch test wasn't scored on a gate that never reached the post. The closer's tension screw was backed off from age and vibration; it got reset to the manufacturer's spec and the hinge sag that prompted the call got corrected at the same time, since the two shared a root cause in a loose post-mount bracket. Steps 5 and 6 re-ran clean on three fresh cycles: full closure, positive latch every time. Step 7 measured the release at 52 inches, below the 54 inch threshold, so pool-side mounting and the gap condition were checked and both passed. Record signed, no interim restraint needed since the fail was resolved on-site.
