Sliding Gate Track and Roller Installation Technique

Why this matters

A sliding gate lives or dies on the track. A gate hung on correctly rated rollers and a track bed that's off level by half an inch over its run doesn't sag the way a swing gate sags; it binds, chatters, or climbs off the rail entirely, and every one of those failure modes shows up as an operator strain fault or a gate that jumps the track under power, not a quiet drag the customer tolerates for a season. Track work also happens once. A swing gate hinge can be re-shimmed from the front; a track bedded wrong is a demolition and a re-pour. The technique in this piece is what makes the sizing numbers in the cantilever sizing reference actually hold up in the ground.

Two track systems, and which technique applies

Ground-mounted sliding gates run V-grooved wheels on a steel or aluminum track set in a concrete bed, with a guide channel or rollers at the top of the gate riding a wall- or post-mounted bracket to keep it from tipping outward. Cantilever gates carry their own weight on truck assemblies riding inside an inverted track welded to the gate frame, supported entirely on posts to one side of the opening with nothing in the driveway surface. Ground-mounted systems are simpler to install and cheaper in material, but the track sits in the vehicle path and collects debris, ice, and gravel that has to be cleared for the gate to run; cantilever systems clear the driveway completely but need the post lever-arm engineering the cantilever sizing reference covers, and this piece assumes that sizing is already done before you break ground. Confirm which system the job calls for before ordering track, because the installation sequence below diverges at the track-bed step and the hardware isn't interchangeable between the two.

Excavate and prep the bed before the track goes in

For a ground track, excavate a trench the width of the track base plus 4 to 6 inches on each side, to a depth that puts the finished concrete flush with the surrounding grade or drive surface. Set form boards to hold the trench width and pitch a slight cross-slope, about 1/8 inch per foot, away from the track centerline so water doesn't pool and freeze inside the guide channel. For a cantilever gate, the excavation is at the two support posts only, sized per the post footing depth and diameter the sizing reference calls for; there's no ground trench because the gate never touches the driveway surface. In both cases, call in utility locates before digging near a driveway approach or a gate opening that's been in place for years; buried irrigation lines and low-voltage lighting circuits collect exactly where a driveway gate goes, and the buried-line protocol is covered on its own in the underground-utility reference for this trade, not repeated here.

Hazard: an open trench across a driveway or walkway is a trip and ankle-roll hazard for anyone crossing the site while work is in progress, including the customer checking on progress. Barricade or cover an open trench any time it's left unattended, and if that barricade gets moved or removed by site traffic before you're back, don't resume work until you've re-checked the trench is still barricaded.

Set the track dead level and to gauge

Level is the single highest-leverage step in the whole install. Run a string line the full length of the track bed and check elevation every 4 feet with a laser or a long level; the track needs to read level within about 1/8 inch over any 10-foot span, because a wheel riding a track that drops even slightly downhill will let the gate creep open or closed under its own weight between uses, and a track that's high in the middle binds the wheels at both ends simultaneously. Set the track to the gauge (the wheel-to-guide spacing) the manufacturer specifies for the roller hardware you're installing; track and truck sizing has to match within the manufacturer's stated tolerance the way the cantilever sizing reference describes, and a track set to the wrong gauge lets the wheels chatter and skip rather than roll true. Anchor the track into the wet concrete with embedded anchor straps or, on a retrofit into cured concrete, epoxy anchors sized for the track's fastener spacing; screws into a shallow scratch coat pull loose under the first season of gate cycling.

Weld or bolt the track to the gate frame

On a cantilever gate the track is welded to the gate's steel frame with a continuous fillet weld per the hardware manufacturer's detail, not a stitch weld, because a gap in the weld run becomes a stress riser exactly where the truck load concentrates as the gate cycles thousands of times a year. Grind weld spatter smooth on the inside face of the track before the trucks go in; a rough bead inside the channel chews a wheel's polymer or rubber tread within the first month. On a ground-mounted system the track is typically bolted or embedded rather than welded, since it's a fixed run rather than something that moves with the gate.

Hazard: welding on a gate frame throws UV radiation, spatter, and metal fume; work with a proper welding shield, keep bystanders and pets clear of the arc flash radius, and if the frame carries any galvanized coating, grind the coating back from the weld zone first, because welding through galvanizing releases zinc oxide fume that causes metal fume fever on inhalation. Grinding weld spatter throws metal dust and sparks; wear eye protection and a respirator rated for the dust, and clear anything combustible from the spark radius before you start.

Align and mount the roller assemblies

Mount the roller trucks (or, on a ground system, the guide wheel carriage) to the track with the gate weight resting on them, not before, so the alignment reflects the actual loaded position rather than an unloaded guess. Roll the gate through its full travel by hand before doing anything else, feeling for any point in the run where resistance increases; a rough spot that's consistent at the same point on every pass is almost always a track-alignment issue at that station, not a wheel problem, because a bad wheel drags evenly across the whole run rather than at one spot. Adjust the truck's vertical set screws (where the hardware provides them) to level the gate frame relative to the track before final-torquing the truck bolts, and check the gate's top guide or roller engagement at both fully open and fully closed positions, since a truck alignment that looks fine mid-travel can still let the gate lean out of its guide at either end of the run.

Fit the end guides and the ground stop

Every sliding gate needs a positive stop at both the fully open and fully closed positions, independent of anything the operator or latch provides, because a gate that relies on an electric limit switch alone to stop its travel will eventually run past that limit on a power blip or a worn switch and either derail or strike whatever's at the end of the run. A mechanical stop, a bolted angle bracket or a welded tab the truck or wheel physically contacts, sets that hard limit. Fit and adjust the stops after the gate has been running clean through several manual passes, not before, so they land at the gate's actual travel limits rather than a measured guess that may not match how the gate settles once it's loaded and aligned.

Worked example: an 18-foot ground-mounted parking gate

The job: an 18-foot ground-mounted sliding gate for a small retail lot, steel frame with mesh infill, replacing a track that had heaved out of level after a hard freeze the previous winter. The trench gets excavated 10 inches wide by the track manufacturer's specified depth, form boards set, and the string line run the full 18 feet. First level check comes back reading 3/16 inch low at the 12-foot mark relative to both ends, just outside the 1/8 inch over 10 feet tolerance this track needs to hold. That's the stop point: pouring against that grade bakes a low spot into the concrete permanently, and no amount of shimming the track afterward corrects a dip in the slab itself, only in the track sitting on top of it. The form board gets reset and packed at the low station, the string line re-checked, and the second reading comes back level within 1/16 inch across the full run. Concrete gets poured against the corrected form.

Once cured, the track goes down anchored at the spacing the manufacturer's detail calls for, and the gate, already assembled with its truck wheels mounted, gets set on the track and rolled through its full 18-foot travel by hand. The pass is smooth except for a slight catch about 3 feet from the closed end. Checking that station against the string line shows it's still within tolerance, so the catch traces instead to a wheel-to-track gauge that's a hair tight at that one truck; the truck's mounting bolts get backed off a quarter turn, the gauge re-set to the manufacturer's spacing, and re-torqued. Second manual pass runs clean end to end. The mechanical stops go in at both ends only after that clean pass, bolted to the track flange where the trucks actually rest at full travel.

Verify the installation

Run the gate by hand through three full open-close cycles and confirm no binding, no audible wheel roar, and consistent effort throughout the run rather than a spike at one point. Check both mechanical stops are engaged squarely, not glancing, at full open and full closed. Re-check track level at the same stations measured during layout; concrete can move slightly during its first cure cycle and a station that read level at pour can drift by the time the track is loaded. Confirm every anchor and truck bolt is torqued, not just snug, and that any weld on the gate frame has cooled and been wire-brushed clean of slag before the gate goes into service. A gate that clears manual cycling clean is the one that's ready to hand off for an automated operator, if the job calls for one, under its own commissioning procedure.
