Trex Seclusions Vs Illusions Vinyl Fence Decision Guide

Why this matters

Trex Seclusions is a composite fence (wood-flour and polymer core, no cap) marketed for residential privacy use; Illusions Vinyl Works is a separately-engineered cellular PVC fence sold through some of the same distributors. The two are commonly cross-shopped by homeowners and quoted interchangeably by sales reps who do not know the engineering difference. The structural envelope, the wind-load rating, the install method, and the warranty are not interchangeable. Quote Seclusions where the customer wanted Illusions and the customer gets a heavier, structurally-different fence than they expected; quote Illusions where the structural code requires Seclusions and the post-spacing requirement changes the budget. This reference covers the material chemistry, the section-modulus difference, the panel-versus-board construction, wind-load ratings per the manufacturer's published engineering, and the warranty terms that drive the contract.

Material chemistry

Trex Seclusions is a composite system: HDPE polymer mixed with recycled wood flour, formed into the picket boards, rails, and posts. No cap. Density approximately 60 lb/ft3. Color is integral through the section, so scuffs and scratches reveal the same material. Three colors: Saddle, Winchester Grey, Woodland Brown.

Illusions Vinyl Works is a 100 percent virgin cellular PVC system - no wood content. Density approximately 38 lb/ft3. Color is achieved through co-extruded surface lamination (Classic Grand Illusions line) or integral pigmentation (standard white/tan/khaki). The Grand Illusions wood-grain finishes are a premium tier with a printed wood-look surface.

The chemistry difference cascades through every downstream behavior:

  • Heat resistance: PVC begins to soften at roughly 165 F surface temperature; composite holds shape to roughly 180 F. In Phoenix or south Florida summer, both can warp under prolonged direct sun in dark colors; the composite holds slightly better.
  • UV stability: both lines use UV stabilizers. The Trex composite warranty covers fade to 5 Delta E for 25 years; Illusions warranty covers fade for the matching warranty term (lifetime limited on the structural product).
  • Moisture: Trex composite absorbs negligible moisture but the wood-flour core can support mold growth in shaded, perpetually wet conditions. Illusions PVC is impervious. North-facing shaded fences in humid climates favor Illusions.

Structural construction

Trex Seclusions:

  • Post: 5 in. x 5 in. composite hollow section with integral steel reinforcing channel for posts taller than 6 ft.
  • Rails: 2 in. x 7 in. (top and bottom) composite hollow rails that slide through the post.
  • Pickets: tongue-and-groove vertical composite boards that slot into the top and bottom rails.
  • Assembly: pickets are not fastened to the rails; gravity and the picket-to-picket interlock hold them in place. The rails are pinned to the posts with set screws.

Illusions Vinyl Works:

  • Post: 5 in. x 5 in. cellular PVC hollow section with optional steel insert for 6 ft and taller installations.
  • Rails: 2 in. x 6 in. or 2 in. x 7 in. cellular PVC hollow rails with internal steel reinforcement on heavier residential lines.
  • Pickets: tongue-and-groove vertical PVC boards.
  • Assembly: pickets slot into rails; rails attach to posts via factory-routed pockets and stainless screws.

The structural rationale: both systems use the post-pocket method to allow rail attachment without exposed fasteners on the picket face. The composite construction is heavier per linear foot, which means the truck delivery cost is higher and the install crew handling is harder.

Wind-load ratings

Per Trex Seclusions Engineering Data (current edition):

  • 6 ft Seclusions fence on 5x5 posts at 8 ft o.c., footing per the install guide: rated for 90 mph basic wind speed per ASCE 7 in residential exposure B.
  • 6 ft Seclusions with steel-reinforced posts at 6 ft o.c.: rated for 110 mph.
  • 8 ft Seclusions only available with steel reinforcement, rated for 110 mph at 6 ft o.c.

Per Illusions Vinyl Works Engineering Data:

  • 6 ft Illusions on 5x5 PVC posts at 6 ft o.c., footing per install guide: rated for 90 mph.
  • 6 ft Illusions with steel-insert posts at 8 ft o.c.: rated for 100 mph.
  • 8 ft Illusions with steel insert at 6 ft o.c.: rated for 110 mph.

Read those as three-part rows and never split them: height, post spacing, and reinforcement together produce the rating. Wind load on a post scales with the square of the wind speed AND linearly with the tributary area the post carries, which is height times spacing. Going from 90 to 110 mph is about 1.5 times the pressure. Opening the spacing from 6 ft to 8 ft is another 1.33 times the load on each post. So a row that widens the spacing and raises the rating at the same time is asking the reinforcement to cover both, and it is the row most often mis-transcribed into a quote.

Before you price a job off any row above, pull the current published engineering sheet for the exact line and confirm the spacing on the row you are quoting. Manufacturers revise these tables, and the second Illusions row runs opposite to the direction every other row in both tables goes. If the sheet in front of you does not show that combination, build to the tighter spacing.

Higher-wind coastal jobs require the steel-insert option in both systems. Quote it explicitly; the steel insert is a separate line item that crews and sales reps sometimes leave out.

Install method and post setting

Both systems require concrete-set posts; neither is rated for direct-burial without concrete.

Trex Seclusions post setting per the Installation Guide:

  • Hole depth 30 in. minimum residential, 36 in. in frost-heave-prone soil, or below the local frost depth, whichever is deeper. Do not stop at 36 in. because the install guide says so: frost depth runs well past 36 in. across the northern tier, and the building department's published frost depth governs over the manufacturer's number.
  • Hole diameter 10 in. minimum.
  • Concrete mounded above grade, sloped to shed water.
  • Plumb the post in two planes before concrete sets - composite is not as forgiving as wood for adjustment after.

Illusions Vinyl Works post setting:

  • Hole depth and diameter similar to Trex.
  • PVC post fits over a treated wood inner post in the alternative install method (the wood absorbs the structural load and the PVC is the cosmetic cover). This method is faster but uses more material.
  • The pure PVC-post method without the wood liner requires the steel insert for any installation taller than 5 ft.

Warranty terms

Trex Seclusions: 25-year limited residential transferable warranty covering material defects, cracking, splitting, splintering, and color fade beyond 5 Delta E. The transferability matters at sale - homeowners can pass the remaining warranty to a buyer.

Illusions Vinyl Works: lifetime limited residential transferable warranty on the structural product, with separate color warranty terms (standard colors lifetime, Grand Illusions wood-grain colors 20-year limited).

The Illusions lifetime structural warranty is the more attractive term on paper; the Trex composite warranty's heavier-product feel sells in person. Both warranties exclude damage from physical impact, snow load above the rated, and aftermarket coatings.

Cost positioning

Both lines are premium-priced versus standard PVC fence (Veranda, Bufftech) at the home center. The Trex Seclusions composite is generally priced near the Illusions Classic line. Grand Illusions wood-grain pricing is the premium tier of either line.

The hidden cost on Trex is delivery and handling - the composite weighs roughly 1.6x the equivalent PVC fence, which can require a heavier truck and more crew on install day.

Decision tree

Work the branches in order and stop at the first one that decides the job.

1. Design wind speed. Above 90 mph basic wind speed, both lines need the steel-reinforced post option, and you quote the exact published row that pairs that reinforcement with the spacing you will actually build. Do not carry a spacing over from the other manufacturer's table; the two lines do not publish the same combinations. If the design wind exceeds what either publishes at the spacing you intend to install, neither is the answer and the conversation moves to an engineered fence or a shorter height. Never quote off a rating that assumes a spacing you are not going to build.

2. Shade and moisture. North-facing runs, under canopy, or against a wet grade in a humid climate goes to the cellular PVC. The wood flour in the composite core does not rot structurally, but it supports surface mold in a permanently damp shaded location, and that becomes a cleaning complaint every spring.

3. Sun and dark color. Dark color on a south or west exposure in a hot climate goes to the composite, which holds shape at a higher surface temperature. Dark PVC in that same spot is where panel bow shows up.

4. Impact exposure. Ball fields, dog runs, driveway edges, and anywhere a string trimmer or mower will hit the bottom rail favor the composite, because the color runs through the section and a gouge exposes the same material. A deep scratch through a laminated wood-grain PVC picket is a picket swap, not a buff-out.

5. The look the customer is buying. Bright architectural white stays bright in PVC. Wood tone with real weight in the hand sells itself at the sample board in composite. If the customer will decide by touching a sample, bring both.

6. Site access and crew size. The composite runs roughly 1.6x the weight of the equivalent PVC. Long carries from the street, backyard-only access through a gate, elevated terraces, or a two-person crew all argue for PVC on labor alone.

7. Warranty as tiebreaker. With everything above a wash, the lifetime limited structural term is the stronger piece of paper. Put the transferability in writing at the sale either way; it is a real resale talking point and customers forget it by closing day.

If nothing above breaks the tie, let the customer's eye decide. On a standard 6 ft residential privacy run, neither line is a technical mistake.
