Opener Noise and Vibration Complaint Visit

Purpose

A noise ticket is the one techs treat as a soft complaint and the one that ends in a refund argument, because nobody wrote down how loud it was when they arrived.

This SOP turns "it wakes the baby" into numbers at two marked positions, proves the door and counterbalance before anything is isolated, and closes on a measured reduction.

Scope

Covers a booked noise or vibration complaint on a residential or light commercial trolley-rail or wall-mount operator that still runs: rumble overhead, chain slap, a rattle at start and stop.

Does not cover repairing what the survey finds. Rail, chain, belt and trolley route to garagedoor-opener-rail-and-trolley-repair-standard; rollers and hinges to garagedoor-roller-and-hinge-replacement-service; counterbalance to garagedoor-door-balance-test-standard. A single loud bang, a door gone heavy, or a grinding that changes with load is handled at step 1.

The two routes noise takes to the bedroom

Airborne noise leaves the door as sound in the garage air and reaches the house through the wall and ceiling membrane. Structure-borne noise never travels as air: the head vibrates and the floor above radiates that vibration as rumble. A quieter drive does almost nothing for the second one.

Separate them with weighting: an A-weighted and a C-weighted reading at the same point on the same run. A-weighting discounts low frequencies the way the ear does and C-weighting does not, so the gap measures low-frequency content there. Shop default, not a standard: 15 dB or more of C minus A reads structure-borne, under 10 dB airborne, and 10 to 15 gets both.

Procedure

1. Triage the complaint before the truck rolls. Ask what the sound is like, when it started and whether the door has changed weight. Acceptance is the complaint classified in writing, noise-only or converted. Stop rule: a single loud bang followed by a door that is heavy by hand is a broken spring or a cable off, so nobody touches the door and the ticket converts to garagedoor-broken-spring-emergency-call-response. Hazard: a torsion spring holds enough stored energy to break an arm, and the customer told to try it once more is who that happens to.

2. Mark two positions and take the baseline before touching anything. Position one is on the door centerline, 3 ft out and 5 ft above the slab; position two is the marked complaint spot in the room above. At each, record background with the house quiet, then A and C levels on a full opening cycle. Acceptance is six figures written down, background plus A and C at both, on a Class 2 sound level meter, the shop grade under ANSI S1.4 and IEC 61672; an uncertified phone app gives a before-and-after difference, never a level you quote. Stop rule: under 3 dB over background the figure is an upper bound, not a level you can quote, so the visit reschedules to a quiet hour; 3 to 10 dB takes the conventional background correction and gives a usable corrected level; 10 dB or more needs none. Hazard: the door is cycling with people in the garage, so the opening stays clear and the vehicle comes out first.

3. Put the door down and the operator dead, then prove the counterbalance by hand. Unplug the operator and pocket the plug, the cord-and-plug exemption at 29 CFR 1910.147(a)(2)(iii)(A), which holds only while the plug stays with you, then pull the release and work the door through full travel. Acceptance is a moderate one-hand lift and the door holding within 2 in of where you leave it at mid travel over 10 seconds. Drift down is under-sprung, creep up over-sprung, and either converts the visit under garagedoor-door-balance-test-standard, because a drive train dragging a door the springs are not carrying goes loud again on new parts. Hazard: hands flat on the section face only, never on a joint or a roller, which close on fingers as the door moves.

4. Survey the door hardware on manual, and treat what you find first. With the door still released, spin every roller, check each hinge and pull the track fasteners. Acceptance is every roller turning freely under thumb pressure with no flat, no stem rocking in its sleeve, hinges unspread at the knuckle, no loose track lag. Stop rule: worn hardware routes to garagedoor-roller-and-hinge-replacement-service, is replaced before any isolation work, and position two re-measured, because isolating a head that transmits roller impacts treats the wrong end. Hazard: a bottom-bracket roller sits on a cable under full spring tension and is not touched here; aerosol lubricant is an inhalation and contact route with a flammable propellant, so ventilate, work to the label, and never spray within reach of a water-heater or furnace pilot.

5. Survey the drive train and, above all, how the head is hung. Check chain or belt tension against the manual, then take every hanger fastener and the header bracket. Acceptance is tension at the manual's figure, straps touching nothing but their own fasteners, and every hanger fastener landed in framing rather than ceiling membrane, confirmed by shavings at the pilot. Stop rule: a fastener not in framing is relocated onto a joist before the operator runs again. Hazard: take the weight of the head on a prop or a second person before the first fastener comes out, because an unsupported head swings down on the rail; if a strap tears out, everyone clears the door plane and the operator does not run until it hangs from framing again.

6. Decide the route from the readings, then choose the treatment. Compare C minus A at position two against the defaults above. Acceptance is a stated route with the number behind it. Structure-borne means isolation, the head hung from framing with resilient material at the strap and nothing bearing on the ceiling; airborne means the hardware and drive work at steps 4 and 5, the drive change quoted separately. Both, the 10 to 15 band, means the hardware and hanger work first and a re-read before any drive is offered. Stop rule: do not sell a belt drive to a customer whose C minus A says structure-borne; the head will still be bolted to the same joists. Hazard: none at this step, it is arithmetic.

7. Restore power, re-measure, and re-prove the protections you disturbed. Re-engage the trolley, stand beside the head out of the door plane and run it. Acceptance is four things: a repeat A and C reading at both positions with background re-checked; at least 5 dBA of reduction at position two, the shop default for a change a customer hears; the photo-eye obstruction test reversing a closing door; and the contact-reversal test reversing on the object the manual names, commonly a 2x4 laid flat at 1.5 in, inside its stated time. Those last two are the entrapment protection the head is listed to under UL 325; 16 CFR Part 1211 binds the manufacturer of any operator made on or after January 1, 1993, and your duty to run the test comes from the manual and ordinary care. Stop rule: if any hanger, bracket, limit or force setting moved, garagedoor-limit-and-force-verification-after-a-repair runs before the door goes back in service, and a failed reversal red-tags it. Hazard: this step puts motion back with the customer in the garage, so clear the opening aloud before every cycle and use a block of wood as the test object, never a hand or a foot.

8. Hand over the numbers, including the ones that did not move. Show the customer before and after at their own mark. Acceptance is the customer told the reduction, the level left, and the next step: a second visit, a drive change, or a ceiling detail that is a builder's job. Stop rule: where the reduction missed 5 dBA, say so rather than rounding up, and either book the next step or close the ticket as not improved. Hazard: none here, a conversation on the driveway.

The record this produces

Worked pass: rumble over a bedroom, one failed step

Attached garage, chain drive about nine years old, a single 16 by 7 four-section door on ten rollers, master bedroom above, rumble on the morning departure.

Step 1: classified noise-only, door not heavy by hand, no bang reported. Step 2: position two at the bedside, marked. Bedroom background 32 dBA, running 54 dBA and 72 dBC; 54 minus 32 leaves a 22 dB margin, above 10, so no correction. C minus A is 72 minus 54, or 18 dB, above the 15 dB default, so structure-borne. Garage background 38 dBA, running 78 dBA and 84 dBC, margin 40 dB; C minus A there is 84 minus 78, or 6 dB, airborne at the source.

Step 3: operator unplugged and pocketed, door released. Lift moderate, drift 1.5 in over 10 seconds at mid travel against the 2 in acceptance, so the counterbalance passed.

Step 4 failed and took its stop rule. Three of the ten rollers had flats and would not spin under thumb pressure, and one end hinge was spread. The step forbids isolation ahead of hardware, so those rollers and that hinge were replaced under the roller and hinge SOP and position two re-measured: 49 dBA and 68 dBC, so 54 minus 49 is 5 dB down and C minus A is 68 minus 49, or 19 dB, still structure-borne.

Step 5: chain tension at the manual's figure. The hangers were not: one of the two rear lags had missed the joist and was holding in ceiling membrane, no shavings at the pilot. The head was propped before either fastener came out, both straps relocated onto the joist with resilient material, nothing left bearing on drywall. Step 6: the route still read structure-borne at 19 dB, so isolation was the treatment and no drive change quoted.

Step 7: trolley re-engaged, power restored from beside the head, opening clear. Position two read 44 dBA and 58 dBC against an unchanged 32 background, so the margin is 44 minus 32, or 12 dB, needing no correction. Total reduction is 54 minus 44, or 10 dB, clearing the 5 dBA default, and C minus A is 58 minus 44, or 14 dB, out of the structure-borne band and into the 10 to 15 band that reads as both. Position one re-read at 76 dBA and 82 dBC on the same 38 background, 2 dB down; the 5 dBA default is written for position two. No setting had moved but the hanger geometry had, so the limit and force check ran anyway; the photo eyes reversed a closing door and the 2x4 laid flat at 1.5 in reversed on contact inside the manual's stated time. Step 8: the customer was shown 54 to 44 at their own bedside mark, told the next step is a ceiling detail, and both sets of readings went on the ticket.
