Torsion Spring Wind Direction Identification
Why this matters
Torsion springs come in two wind directions: "left-wind" and "right-wind." Standard residential dual-spring installations use one of each (a mirror pair) - installing two of the same wind direction creates incorrect operation and damages the door system. Many service techs encounter this confusion at the first spring replacement they do; this reference walks through the identification and the standard practice.
What "wind direction" means
A torsion spring is a tightly-wound steel coil. The coil winds in one of two directions when viewed end-on:
Right-wind spring (RH spring):
- Standing at the spring's stationary end, looking toward the wind end, the coils spiral up to the right
- "Right-hand winding"
- Used on the LEFT side of the door when installed in a standard dual-spring setup (counterintuitive)
Left-wind spring (LH spring):
- Standing at the spring's stationary end, the coils spiral up to the left
- "Left-hand winding"
- Used on the RIGHT side of the door in standard dual-spring setup
The left-wind / right-wind designation refers to the SPRING'S winding direction, not its installation position.
Visual identification
The wind direction is visible from the spring:
- Look at the end of the spring where the wire exits the coil
- Trace the wire's path going AROUND the spring's body
- If the wire wraps clockwise (when viewed from the end), it's a right-wind
- If the wire wraps counterclockwise (viewed from the same end), it's a left-wind
Some manufacturers stamp "L" or "R" on the spring; verify if possible.

For a dual-spring system on a residential door (most common):

The drum (cable wrapping point) on each side determines the direction the spring winds. Drums are also right or left handed, and they match the side they're on.
Single-spring system
For a single-spring installation (rare in residential, more common in older or smaller doors):
- One spring carries the full door load
- Wind direction is determined by the drum orientation
- Either left-wind OR right-wind depending on which drum side the spring engages
Color coding
Spring manufacturers use color coding to indicate cycle rating + wind direction:

Color conventions vary by manufacturer; verify with the specific manufacturer's documentation.
What happens if you install backwards
If you install two right-wind springs OR two left-wind springs:
- The door immediately operates incorrectly
- The cables may unwind off the drums rather than wrap onto them
- Significant force may be applied to the spring in the wrong direction
- Spring damage is rapid (can happen within the first few cycles)
- The door may not be properly counterbalanced
This is a major error. Verify wind direction before installing, twice.
Quick identification field test
Before installing a new spring:
- Place the new spring at its intended installation position
- Verify the wind direction matches the existing spring's wind direction (the failed one being replaced)
- The mounting cone (the end with the bolt holes for the bracket) goes to the stationary anchor
- The winding cone (where the winding bars insert) goes toward the door
If the new spring won't fit the same way as the old one came out, it's the wrong wind direction.
Ordering / specifying
When ordering replacement springs:
- Verify wind direction
- Color code or manufacturer designation
- Some manufacturers ship springs labeled L/R for clarity
- Some manufacturers' parts catalogs split L/R as separate part numbers
Common designations:
- "L-wind" or "L-wound" = left-wind
- "R-wind" or "R-wound" = right-wind
- "M" or "F" sometimes used (male/female windings)
When in doubt:
- Photograph the existing failed spring
- Photograph the spring's installed orientation
- Send to the supplier with the part number; verify before purchase
Cable drums and wind direction
Cable drums also have wind direction:
- Right-hand drum: cable wraps clockwise (when viewed from the spring side)
- Left-hand drum: cable wraps counterclockwise
The drum wind direction matches the spring wind direction on the same side:
- Right-wind spring + right-hand drum on the LEFT side
- Left-wind spring + left-hand drum on the RIGHT side
If a drum is replaced, verify direction matches the spring. Drums are color-coded and stamped (L/R) for identification.
Counterintuitive: the "right-wind spring goes on the left side"
The spring's wind direction and its installation position are opposite for a reason:
- As the door closes, the spring needs to wind in a specific direction
- As the door opens, the spring needs to unwind
- The combination of drum direction and spring wind direction determines the winding behavior
- The result: a right-wind spring on the LEFT side of the door produces the correct winding behavior
Don't try to memorize the logic; just remember:
- Right-wind = left-side installation
- Left-wind = right-side installation
(Per the standard convention. Some older installations may be opposite; verify by inspection.)
Some doors use the opposite convention
Older doors, custom installations, and some manufacturers use the opposite convention:
- Right-wind on the right side
- Left-wind on the left side
When servicing an existing door, ALWAYS match the existing convention. Don't try to "correct" the wind direction to a different convention - the cable drums are already set up for the existing convention.
Tools to verify wind direction
When in doubt:
- Visual inspection: trace the spring's wire as described above
- Comparison with the existing spring: install the new one in the same orientation as the old
- Manufacturer documentation: many provide installation guides specific to the door model
- Supplier guidance: most suppliers can identify the wind direction from a photo
Common pitfalls
- Installing two same-wind springs - door doesn't operate correctly; spring damage
- Mismatched spring + drum wind direction - cables come off the drums
- Ordering without verifying - wrong direction shipped; delay in repair
- Photographing the wrong end of the spring - confused by mirror image
- Trusting a customer's verbal description - verify by inspection
When a spring "looks like" it should be the same as the other side
Two things fool the eye on a torsion pair, and both are geometry rather than carelessness.
The mirror problem. Wind direction is a property of the wire helix, not of how the spring sits in space. A right-wind and a left-wind spring viewed from opposite ends photograph identically. Sight both springs from one fixed position, looking at the same end of each, and the difference is unmistakable. Walk around the shaft between the two looks and it disappears. Pick a side of the door, stand there, and read both springs from that spot.
Flipping does not convert a spring. End-for-end rotation does not change the helix. What it does change is which end carries the winding cone, and that is exactly what makes a wrong-wind spring feel like it almost fits. If the new spring only mounts with the winding cone facing away from the door, the problem is wind direction, not the bracket.
Where this actually bites:
- A "pair" out of one box. The crew assumes a pair means one of each and grabs both. Confirm each spring on its own.
- Same wire size, same length, same look. Wind is the one spec you cannot read off the dimensions. Cone color helps only if you know that manufacturer's convention, and the conventions are not universal.
- Single-spring doors. With no partner to compare against, your references are the failed spring and the drums. Keep the old spring on site until the new one is up and wound, and let the drums settle any argument: the drum hand and the spring wind have to correspond or the cable will not lay onto the drum.
- A door someone else serviced. If the previous install ran against the standard convention and the door has been working, the door is telling you which convention it wants. Match the door, not the textbook.
The habit that prevents all of it takes half a minute: before the old spring comes off the shaft, photograph both of its ends in place with the door in frame, and photograph the drums. Compare the new spring against that photo, standing where you stood when you took it.
