Downspout Extensions and Foundation Drainage
Why this matters
The downspout's job is to move water AWAY from the foundation. Without proper extensions, water pools at the foundation, leading to basement water issues, foundation damage, soil erosion, and mosquito breeding. Many customers have inadequate downspout extensions. Adding proper extensions is one of the highest-value low-cost services in gutter contracting.
What "away" means
Water should be directed:
- At least 6 feet from the foundation (residential standard)
- 10 feet preferred (better drainage)
- Toward a drainage area (not against another structure)
- Downhill (where possible)
The further away, the better.

For premium installations:

When the discharge is uphill
If the discharge area is higher than the downspout:

For these customers, more involved solutions.

- Install the emitter
- Connect the buried pipe

The emitter is designed to be unobtrusive when not in use.

When the customer reports basement water
Multiple causes:
- Inadequate downspout extension (primary cause for many)
- Grading issues
- Foundation cracks
- Sump pump failure
Investigate the primary cause; downspout extensions often help significantly.
Customer expectations
After installation:
- What it will do: move roof water away from the foundation instead of dumping it at the corner of the house. That is the whole job, and it is usually the biggest single improvement available on a wet-basement call.
- What it will not do: fix bad grading, seal a cracked foundation wall, or replace a failed sump pump. If any of those are also in play, the extension is one part of the fix and the customer needs to hear that before you invoice, not after the next storm.
- Discharge point matters: water has to leave at a spot that drains away, not into a low pocket, not onto the neighbor's lot, and not back toward the house. Show them where it comes out.
- Buried lines need maintenance: pop-up emitters and buried pipe silt up and freeze. They need to be checked and flushed, typically annually, and the emitter has to stay clear of mulch and sod.
- Freeze behavior: buried and above-grade extensions both ice up in hard freezes. Water will back up and overflow at the elbow until it thaws. That is expected, not a defect.
- Mow and traffic care: above-grade extensions get run over by mowers and kicked loose. Hinged or roll-out extensions have to be put back down after mowing or they do nothing.
- Judge it on the next real storm, not on a hose test. Ask them to walk out during a heavy rain and look at where the water goes, and to call if it is still pooling at the wall.
Set the expectation in writing on the invoice. Most drainage callbacks are expectation problems, not workmanship problems.
