Half-Round vs. K-Style Gutter Profiles
Why this matters
Two primary gutter profiles dominate residential installations: K-style (the modern standard) and half-round (traditional/premium). The choice affects aesthetics, capacity, and cost. Customers ask about the difference; gutter contractors should be able to explain each.
K-style profile
The standard modern profile:
- Decorative front face (resembles crown molding)
- Flat back (fits flush against fascia)
- Larger capacity than half-round of same nominal width, roughly a quarter more cross-sectional area
- Lower cost
- Holds debris in the crease behind the decorative face; not self-cleaning
- 5-inch and 6-inch sizes most common
K-style is what most modern homes have.
Half-round profile
The traditional / premium profile:
- Semicircular cross-section
- Visible from the side
- Lower capacity per inch than K-style
- Higher installed cost, and not because it uses more metal. It uses less: the developed girth of a semicircle is shorter than the back-leg-plus-bottom-plus-decorative-face girth of a K-style of the same nominal size. The premium comes from low production volume, specialty brackets, fewer crews who run it, and the fact that most half-round is specified in copper or zinc rather than aluminum
- Smooth bore with no interior corners, so debris flushes rather than packing
- Classic / period-correct appearance
- 5-inch and 6-inch sizes available
Half-round is what customers choose for aesthetic + traditional looks.

Half-round is the easier of the two to clean out. The curved bore has no interior corner, so a scoop or a rinse clears it in one pass, while K-style holds a line of packed grit in the crease behind the decorative face.
Maintenance differences
Both profiles benefit from:

- Annual paint touch-up (if applicable)
The maintenance is similar; the profile doesn't change the routine.
When the customer wants matching
For existing homes:
- If most homes in the neighborhood have K-style: K-style
- If the customer's home is historic / unique: consider half-round
- If the customer wants modern: K-style
- If the customer wants traditional: half-round
Match the home's character.
Documentation
For each installation:
- Profile and size: half-round or K-style, and the nominal size (5 in, 6 in, 7 in). Half-round and K-style of the same nominal size do not carry the same flow, so the profile has to be recorded with the size.
- Material, gauge or weight, and finish: aluminum 0.027 or 0.032, steel gauge, copper ounce weight, and the exact color name or code. The color code is what makes a section repair possible in five years.
- Hanger type and spacing: hidden hangers, brackets, or spikes and ferrules, with the on-center spacing used and any tighter spacing in snow regions or long spans.
- Downspout size, count, and locations, plus the outlet size at each drop. Note where each downspout discharges.
- Pitch and run lengths, with the high point and the drop point marked per run. This is what the next tech checks first on an overflow call.
- Expansion joint locations on long runs, and end cap and miter details (box miter, strip miter, hand-mitered).
- Leaf protection: brand, style, and which runs got it, since partial coverage is common.
- Photos: each elevation before, the hanger detail and the outlet detail during, and each elevation after. Get one shot showing the gutter to drip-edge relationship, because that is the detail that gets argued about later.
- Warranty terms: material warranty, workmanship warranty, and the registration status.
- Anything you found and did not fix: rotted fascia, failing drip edge, roof condition, grading at the discharge points. Note it, tell the customer, and put it on the invoice.
A half-round install specifically needs the bracket style and the pipe size recorded, because half-round hardware is far less interchangeable across manufacturers than K-style hardware.
