Seamless Gutter Machine Setup and Coil Load Standard

Purpose

A seamless gutter run is only as true as the setup that formed it. A coil loaded off-center, a roller left ungapped for the wrong stock gauge, or a threading skew nobody caught in the first two feet doesn't show up on the trailer, it shows up as a twisted profile that won't sit flat against the fascia on a customer's house, discovered after the crew has already driven off. This standard fixes the machine, verifies it, and proves the first cut before the crew forms a single foot of the job's actual gutter.

Scope

Covers pre-run setup and coil loading on a trailer-mounted rolling former: trailer stabilization, roller and shear pre-check, coil verification against the job ticket, mounting and threading the coil, and proving the first test length. This applies at the first setup of the day and again any time the coil changes mid-day, a color switch between two jobs, a profile switch from 5K to 6K, or a reload after the machine jams; a setup verified once at 7 a.m. does not carry over to a different coil loaded at noon. Procedure

  1. Chock the trailer and confirm it sits level before opening the coil cradle. Set wheel chocks both directions and check the machine bed against its bubble level; correct with the tongue jack if it reads off. Acceptance: chocks set, level reads centered. Wrong looks like a trailer that rocks under hand pressure at the cradle end. Stop rule: re-chock and re-level before touching the coil; do not load stock onto an unstable base. Hazard: a loaded coil sits under spring tension in the cradle, and a trailer that shifts while the coil is being mounted can drop the cradle arm suddenly; keep hands clear of the pinch point between the coil face and the cradle frame while positioning it, and if the trailer moves at all mid-load, stop and restart the load rather than continuing.

  2. Wipe the forming rollers and shear free of paint transfer and oxide film, then verify the roller gap matches today's coil gauge. Clean with mineral spirits station to station; check the gap setting against the machine's own chart for .027 inch versus .032 inch stock. Acceptance: bare metal visible at each roller, gap set to the stated gauge on the chart. Wrong looks like forming heavier stock through a gap set for the lighter gauge, which galls the coil's paint finish and leaves visible drag marks down every finished section. Stop rule: any roller carrying a visible score or groove does not get run today; flag it for the maintenance SOP's roller check before this setup continues. Hazard: the cutoff shear is a guillotine-action edge at the machine's exit; keep fingers clear of the shear throat during this check, and kill drive power before wiping any roller, never wipe a station that could still be coasting.

  3. Match the staged coil's label to the job ticket before it goes on the cradle. Confirm profile width, gauge, color, and lot number if the job is a color-match replacement. Acceptance: all four fields on the coil label match the ticket. Wrong looks like a visually similar but wrong-width coil staged next to the right one, caught only after several feet are formed and won't seat at the fascia. Stop rule: any mismatch halts the load; get the correct coil before mounting anything. Hazard: none at this step, it's a label check at the rack before tension is on the coil.

  4. Mount the coil on the cradle spindle oriented per the machine's threading placard, and engage the cradle brake. Use the hydraulic cradle for 14 and 15 inch coil widths; a manual lift is acceptable only at 11.75 inch. Acceptance: coil seated square on the spindle, leading edge oriented per the placard, brake engaged before release. Wrong looks like a coil mounted backwards, which feeds the finish face into the rollers on the wrong side and abrades the coated surface against the roller teeth as it forms a mirror-image profile. Stop rule: verify orientation against the placard before releasing the brake; if it's unclear, check the placard, don't thread and hope. Hazard: hand-lifting an unbalanced coil onto the spindle is a crush and back-injury risk; use the cradle's lift mechanism rather than muscling any coil the manual lift isn't rated for, and stay off to the side of the spindle axis in case the coil settles unevenly once the brake releases.

  5. Feed the leading edge through the entry guide and first two roller stations by hand, then engage the drive at idle to walk it through the rest. Track the sheet against the guide's reference edge as it advances. Acceptance: less than an eighth inch of visible drift across the guide width through every station. Wrong looks like a skewed feed that compounds through each roller, so stock entering crooked exits crooked and wastes the first several feet before anyone stops to check. Stop rule: any visible drift at the entry guide stops the feed immediately; back it out and re-square rather than running it through and trimming the bad section later. Hazard: hands stay at the entry guide only, never in a roller nip once the drive is engaged; a nip does not release on contact, and gloves increase pull-in risk here rather than reducing it, so bare or snug-fit hands only at this station, per the machine's own guarding.

  6. Cut a test length at the shear and check the profile against the stored good sample or the factory template. Compare height, width, and hem or bead against the reference, and sight down the flat face for oil-canning. Acceptance: dimensions within the machine's stated tolerance of the reference, no visible wave along the flat. Wrong looks like a profile that reads right by eye but sits proud or shy of true once it's actually held against fascia. Stop rule: any dimension out of tolerance stops the run for a roller adjustment; do not form the job's lengths on an unverified setup. Hazard: same nip and shear hazards as step 5; stay clear of the shear throat when it cycles.

  7. Record the setup and start production forming. Log profile, gauge, color and lot, and roller gap setting on the job ticket before forming the job's actual lengths. Acceptance: all four fields entered before production starts. Wrong looks like a crew that skips the log and has no baseline to return to if the machine jams or the coil changes mid-day. Stop rule: no production forming starts with the setup fields blank on the ticket.

The record this produces

The ticket carries profile, gauge, color and lot, and the roller gap setting the crew actually ran. A color-match callback months later gets checked against the lot number logged here, not against memory. A crew lead scanning a week of tickets watches for the same defect recurring across different jobs on the same coil lot, which points at the coil itself rather than any one setup, and watches for the same technician's setups repeatedly needing a mid-run correction, which points at the check being rushed rather than skipped outright.

Worked pass, with a step that failed

A 6-inch K-style job, .032 inch stock, matching an existing run's color for an addition. Step 1: trailer chocked, level confirmed clean. Step 2: rollers wiped to bare metal, gap checked against the chart and set for .032. Step 3: coil label matches the ticket on width, gauge, and color; lot number logged since this is a match job. Step 4: coil mounted on the hydraulic cradle (15 inch width), oriented per the placard, brake engaged.

Step 5: fed through the entry guide and first two stations by hand, drive engaged at idle. The sheet tracked true through the first four stations, then showed a visible eighth-inch drift at the fifth as the drive brought it up to running speed. Fail. Stop rule taken: feed stopped immediately, sheet backed out to the entry guide, re-squared against the reference edge, re-fed. The second pass tracked clean through all stations.

Step 6: test length cut, checked against the stored 6K sample. Height and hem matched within tolerance, no oil-canning on the flat. Step 7: setup logged (6K, .032, matched color and lot number, gap setting from step 2) before the crew formed the job's actual runs.
