Commercial Restroom Hand-Dryer Install (XLerator / Airblade)
Why this matters
A high-speed hand dryer (Excel XLerator, Dyson Airblade V or 9kJ, World Mi-Air) is on every commercial restroom spec for the same reason: total cost of ownership beats paper towels by a wide margin and the unit pays back in 12 to 24 months. The install is straight forward, but the four things that go wrong (under-sized branch circuit, wrong mounting height for ADA, poor backing in a hollow wall, no GFCI where one is required) get the unit warranty-voided, the inspector failing the job, or worse a re-do behind the finished tile. The OEMs publish exact specs; follow them.
Pre-install verification
Before pulling the unit out of the box, confirm:
The branch circuit matches OEM spec. Excel XLerator HD (high-speed, 12.5 A draw at 110-120 V) requires a dedicated 20 A circuit. Excel XLerator-ECO (5.6 A) can share but a dedicated 15 A is the cleaner install. Dyson Airblade units ship in more than one voltage variant and they are not field-convertible, so read the rating plate on the box before you rough anything in. A line-voltage (208-240 V) unit will not run on a 120 V circuit and a low-voltage unit will be destroyed by 240 V. Either way it wants a dedicated circuit sized to the nameplate.
GFCI protection. NEC 210.8(B) covers receptacles in other than dwelling units, and in the 2020 and later cycles its scope is broad: single-phase receptacles rated 150 volts to ground or less and 50 amperes or less, in listed locations that include bathrooms. Note that it reaches RECEPTACLES; hand dryers hard-wired (not receptacle-connected) on a dedicated circuit are typically exempt from the GFCI rule but check the AHJ. Some jurisdictions require GFCI for all restroom branch circuits.
ADA has TWO rules here and the one people quote is not usually the one that fails the job.
Reach range. Under the 2010 ADA Standards and ICC A117.1, unobstructed high reach is 48 in maximum above finish floor for BOTH forward reach (308.2.1) and side reach (308.3.1). The 54 in side-reach figure is from the 1991 ADAAG and was lowered; do not use it. The operable part, which on these units is the sensor, has to sit inside that range.
Protruding objects, Section 307.2. Anything whose leading edge is between 27 in and 80 in above the floor may protrude no more than 4 in into a circulation path. A deep-bodied dryer mounted at hand height in an open path violates this, and no reach-range compliance saves it. Three ways out: pick a shallow-profile unit built to stay under 4 in, recess it, or set it in an alcove or behind a cane-detectable element. This is the rule the inspector writes up, and it is why the shallow models exist.
Use the OEM mounting template for the actual height. Read the template carefully: manufacturers publish mounting dimensions to the BOTTOM of some units and to the TOP of others, and the two differ by the height of the machine, which is around a foot on a full-size dryer. Getting that backwards puts the unit a foot off and out of reach range.
Wall construction. The dryer (XLerator weighs 12 lb, Airblade V weighs 21 lb, Airblade 9kJ weighs 23 lb) needs solid backing. Tile-over-cement-board is preferred. Tile-over-drywall requires a 3/4 in plywood backing plate or solid-strap blocking installed before the tile.
Rough-in
The wall box and conduit stub must align with the OEM mounting template:
- Excel XLerator: 4 in by 4 in metal box, centered behind the dryer body. Wire enters through a 1/2 in conduit knockout on the back of the dryer chassis. Mounting template part XL-MTH for standard, XL-MTH-LO for low height.
- Dyson Airblade V: surface-mount terminal block on the rear of the unit. 1/2 in conduit knockout on top, bottom, or sides. The Airblade Quick Installation Guide specifies a 4S box behind the unit.
- Dyson Airblade 9kJ: same as V; 1/2 in conduit knockout.
Run 12 AWG copper for 20 A circuits, 14 AWG for 15 A. Stranded wire is acceptable at the terminals; solid is easier on the box screw terminals. THHN/THWN inside EMT is the typical commercial wiring method; MC cable is acceptable where permitted by the AHJ.
In retrofit installs, the previous paper-towel dispenser usually has a wall anchor pattern that does not align with the dryer template. Patch the old holes with setting-type joint compound and a fiberglass mesh patch, sand flush, and re-tile or paint as needed before the dryer mounts.
Backing for hollow walls
Drywall alone will not hold a 23 lb dryer that experiences vibration and the occasional pull-down by a user trying to "fix" a unit. The minimum acceptable backing:
- 3/4 in plywood, 16 in by 16 in minimum, screwed to studs with #10 by 3 in wood screws at 6 in on center.
- Or solid-strap blocking (2x6 minimum) between studs at the dryer center line.
Install the backing before tile, drywall, or wall paneling closes the wall. Retrofit through a finished tile wall requires either pulling tile or using a hollow-wall toggle anchor rated for the dryer weight times 4 (safety factor), typically a 1/4 in toggle bolt with a 250 lb rated capacity.
Mounting and final connection
Mark the template centerline on the wall at the design height off the OEM template, and write on the shop drawing whether that dimension is to the top or the bottom of the unit. Then check the resulting sensor height against the 48 in reach maximum and the leading edge against the 4 in protrusion rule before a hole gets drilled.
Drill the mounting holes per the template. The XLerator uses 4 wall anchors plus 2 mounting hooks; the Airblade V uses 6 mounting points.
Land the wire on the terminal block. Confirm phase rotation on 208-240 V units (the Airblade does not care about phase but the inspector may want it landed L1-L2 not L2-N to avoid a derived neutral issue at the panel).
Verify cover plate engagement. The XLerator cover engages the security key bolt on the bottom; mis-engagement is the number one warranty call. The Airblade cover snaps over the chassis with a captive screw on the bottom edge.
Test. Power on, hand under the IR sensor, confirm 10 second run cycle (XLerator default) or 12 second cycle (Airblade V).
Drain pan and water management
The Dyson Airblade pulls water off the hands and routes it through internal drain channels to a removable filter and drip tray. The unit must be level (1/4 in over 12 in is acceptable; more than that causes the drip tray to overflow). The XLerator does not capture water; water falls directly to the floor. Check where it lands and where it goes. The IPC's floor drain requirements are in Section 412; whether this particular restroom is required to have one depends on the occupancy and the fixture count, so read the section rather than assuming.
A non-capturing dryer over hard tile puts water on the floor every single use. That is a slip exposure the building owns, and ASTM F1637 (Safe Walking Surfaces) is the practice a plaintiff's expert will cite. Raise it in writing before you mount anything: site the unit where the floor already drains or where the traffic pattern does not run under it, spec a capturing unit with a drip tray, or add a wall guard and put the location on the housekeeping schedule. Do not hang it over the middle of a dry tile floor and say nothing.
Commissioning checklist
- Dedicated breaker labeled "Restroom Hand Dryer" at the panel
- Wire gauge and ampacity confirmed against OEM spec
- Backing verified (tap test or pre-install photo)
- ADA mounting height verified (bottom of dryer measured)
- IR sensor sweep range tested at typical user height (low for child accessibility, high for adult)
- Run cycle time and dry-out time verified
- Drip tray (Airblade only) installed and accessible for cleaning
