Dryer Vent Rigid vs Flex Duct Selection per IRC M1502
Why this matters
Dryer vent installation is one of the most failure-prone systems in a residence and one of the most actively code-enforced. NFPA estimates dryers and washing machines cause 13,000 to 16,000 residential fires per year in the U.S.; the majority of the dryer share is lint accumulation in the vent. IRC Section M1502 spells out the duct material, length, and termination rules; a handyman who installs to anything below that standard is on the hook the first time a fire investigator pulls a tape measure. This is the reference to put in front of a homeowner who wants flex hose run through a soffit.
What IRC M1502 actually requires
The 2021 IRC (widely adopted basis for current state codes) specifies:
- Material and size (M1502.4): exhaust ducts shall be rigid metallic material with smooth interior surfaces, minimum 0.0157 inch (28 gauge) nominal thickness, 4 inch (102 mm) nominal diameter.
- Duct length (M1502.4): the maximum allowable length of the exhaust duct is 35 feet, measured from the connection to the transition duct to the outlet terminal. Equivalent length penalties for fittings apply per the code table or the manufacturer's installation instructions.
- Transition ducts (M1502.4): a single 8 foot maximum length of flexible transition duct listed and labeled to UL 2158A is permitted between the dryer connection and the rigid duct. The transition duct cannot pass through any wall, floor, or ceiling and cannot be concealed.
- Duct insulation: exhaust ducts in unconditioned spaces may be required to be insulated to prevent condensation; verify with the AHJ.
- M1502.3 Termination: Outlet terminations to exterior, equipped with a backdraft damper, not on the building roof unless designed for it, minimum 3 feet from any opening into the building.
Manufacturer (Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung, Bosch) installation instructions can be more stringent and per M1502.1 the more restrictive rule applies.
Equivalent length deductions for elbows
The IRC equivalent-length table and most manufacturer tables deduct equivalent feet per fitting, and the deduction depends on the elbow's radius, not just its angle:
- 90 degree mitered elbow: 5 feet
- 45 degree mitered elbow: 2 feet 6 inches
- 90 degree smooth large-radius elbow: roughly 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 feet, less as the radius grows
- 45 degree smooth large-radius elbow: about 1 foot
- Hood or wall cap with damper: 1 to 1.5 feet depending on the termination
Pull the row that matches the elbow in your hand. Using one number for every elbow is how a run passes on paper and fails on the tape.
A run with the dryer in an interior closet routed up through a soffit and out a sidewall might physically measure 18 feet but include three 90 degree elbows. Mitered, at 5 feet each, that is 33 equivalent feet before the wall cap, which puts the run at the limit. Swap the same three for smooth large-radius elbows at about 1-3/4 feet and the identical duct computes at 23-1/4 feet. Same house, same length of pipe, and the elbow choice is the entire margin.
Why flex hose fails
Acceptable flex transition is labeled to UL 2158A and ships with the dryer or from a parts house. The product that fails is white plastic accordion hose, vinyl hose of any color, foil flex without a UL label, and anything sold for the bathroom exhaust system. Every accordion fold is a lint trap that smooth rigid duct does not have; they also sag and hold condensate, and the plastic and vinyl versions have no temperature rating for a dryer outlet. IRC M1502.4 rules them out entirely, listed transition span or not.
Flex transition in concealed space (inside a wall cavity, above a ceiling, under a floor, through a soffit) is prohibited even when the transition is the UL-listed product. The rigid duct has to run the full concealed length.
Standard install bill of materials
- 28 gauge or heavier rigid galvanized metal duct, 4 inch nominal, smooth interior. Aluminum is acceptable per most AHJs but galvanized is the standard.
- Sheet metal screws are prohibited (M1502.4) because protruding screw points snag lint. Joints are sealed with foil-backed UL 181B tape or aluminum tape; never duct tape (cloth duct tape per the original spec is also prohibited, it fails the temperature rating).
- 90 degree smooth elbows over 90 degree mitered when possible.
- UL 2158A listed transition flex, 8 feet maximum and as short as the dryer position allows, between the dryer and the wall stub. Pull the dryer to inspect this section at every visit.
- Dampered wall cap or roof cap from the manufacturer's published list of compatible terminations.
Cleaning and inspection cadence
Most manufacturer guides recommend annual inspection and cleaning of the entire vent run. There is no code-mandated cleaning interval, and NFPA 211 does not set one here: it is the chimney and solid-fuel standard, and the duct provisions this article is built on are IRC M1502. High-use households (multi-person, daily run) should clean every 6 months. Visual signs that cleaning is needed: clothes taking longer than one cycle to dry, dryer exterior running hotter than normal, lint visible at the exterior termination after running, or condensation at the dryer connection. Use a rotating brush kit (Gardus LintEater or equivalent) inserted from both ends; do not use vacuum-only cleaning, the lint pack will not release until brushed.
Booster fans for long runs
Some manufacturers approve in-line booster fans labeled to UL 705 when the equivalent length exceeds 35 feet. The booster must be installed within the manufacturer's specified distance from the dryer (typically not less than 15 feet) and interlocked with the dryer so the booster runs whenever the dryer runs. Boosters are last-resort; reroute the duct to under 35 feet equivalent before adding fans whenever possible.
A gas dryer vent run that fails causes carbon monoxide and combustion byproducts to vent into the living space instead of outdoors. Per IRC G2439 (Section 614 of the IFGC) the vent for a gas dryer has the same length, material, and termination rules as M1502 plus combustion-air requirements. Never route a gas dryer vent into an attic, crawl space, or building interior under any code in the U.S.
