Basic Faucet Replacement

Why this matters

Faucet replacement is one of the most common handyman service calls: customers buy faucets from home centers and want them installed for a moderate labor on top of the moderate amount faucet cost. The work is straightforward when the existing installation is straightforward, and challenging when corrosion, tight space, or non-standard fittings complicate it. A handyman who can replace a faucet cleanly in 60 to 90 minutes (vs the customer's 4 to 6 hour DIY attempt) commands the labor premium with confidence.

When to perform

  • Customer is replacing fixture (cosmetic or functional update)
  • Existing faucet leaking or failed
  • Customer purchased new faucet, needs install
  • Mismatch between current faucet and remodel style

Pre-installation checks

Before quoting:

  • Verify the new faucet's hole count matches the existing sink:
    • 1-hole faucet (single-handle, no spread)
    • 2-hole faucet (one for spout, one for handle)
    • 3-hole faucet (8-inch standard widespread)
    • 4-hole faucet (3-hole plus sprayer)
  • If hole count doesn't match, deck plate (escutcheon) may bridge the gap, or sink replacement is needed
  • Verify shut-off valves work (turn them; if stuck, replace as part of the job)
  • Verify supply line type (compression vs flex)

Tools

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Basin wrench (for tight space under sink)
  • Channel locks
  • Phillips and flat screwdrivers
  • Plumber's putty or silicone caulk
  • Teflon tape
  • Bucket (for residual water)
  • Towels

Materials

  • New faucet (customer-supplied or selected)
  • New supply lines (often included with faucet; verify compatibility)
  • New shut-off valves (if existing fail or you decide to upgrade)
  • Plumber's putty or silicone caulk
  • Teflon tape

Procedure for typical kitchen faucet replacement

Step 1: Disconnect water supply

  • Locate the hot and cold shut-off valves under the sink
  • Close both
  • Open the faucet to verify water is off
  • Disconnect supply lines from the faucet (use adjustable wrench)
  • Catch any water with a bucket

If the shut-off valves don't turn or leak:

  • Note the issue
  • Discuss with customer (additional cost to replace valves)
  • Address valves before continuing if needed

Step 2: Remove existing faucet

For modern faucets:

  • Remove mounting nut from underneath the sink (basin wrench typically required for the tight space)
  • Older mounting hardware varies (threaded posts, clip systems)
  • Lift faucet out from above

If the faucet is stuck due to mineral buildup:

  • Apply penetrating oil to mounting threads
  • Use channel locks for better grip
  • For stuck faucets, removal can take 30 to 60 minutes alone

Step 3: Clean the sink area

  • Remove old plumber's putty or sealant from around the sink hole(s)
  • Wipe area clean
  • Verify the holes are clean for the new faucet

Step 4: Install new faucet

For a typical single-hole kitchen faucet:

  • Apply plumber's putty (or silicone) around the base of the faucet (or apply gasket if provided)
  • Drop the faucet through the sink hole
  • From underneath, install the mounting nut or plate
  • Tighten gradually until firm; don't over-tighten

For a 3-hole faucet (widespread):

  • Separate components (spout body, two handles)
  • Install each component through its respective hole
  • Connect handles to spout body via the under-sink connector tube

For a faucet with a deck plate:

  • Install deck plate first (bridges multiple holes)
  • Install faucet through deck plate

Step 5: Connect supply lines

  • Connect cold supply line to cold side of faucet
  • Connect hot supply line to hot side of faucet
  • Apply teflon tape to threaded connections
  • Tighten connections; hand tight plus 1/4 to 1/2 turn

For shut-off valves with compression fittings:

  • Pre-existing fittings should still seal
  • For new supply lines, may need new compression ferrules

Step 6: Install accessories

For pull-down or pull-out faucets:

  • Install the spray hose
  • Verify the weight on the hose (allows hose to retract)

For sprayer attachments (older 4-hole):

  • Connect sprayer hose to faucet body

For dishwasher / disposal connections:

  • Verify these are functional after faucet install
  • Sometimes faucet install disrupts these

Step 7: Test for leaks

  • Slowly open the shut-off valves
  • Verify water flows from spout when faucet is opened
  • Check all connections (under sink) for leaks
  • Check faucet base (above sink) for leaks
  • Tighten any leaking connections (typically 1/4 turn more)

Step 8: Clean up

  • Wipe up any water
  • Clean the sink and counter
  • Verify all components are properly attached
  • Test sprayer / pull-down repeatedly

Special situations

Bathroom faucet (similar but simpler)

Most bathroom faucets are 8-inch widespread or 4-inch centerset:

  • 4-inch centerset: 3 connection points on a single base
  • 8-inch widespread: 3 separate components (spout + 2 handles)

Otherwise similar procedure.

Vessel sink faucet

  • Tall vessel-style spout
  • Installation similar but height matters; verify height fits the sink

Wall-mounted faucet

  • Different installation method; mounted to wall behind sink
  • More complex; not typical handyman

Tub / shower faucet

  • More complex; requires accessing wall
  • Different work; consider plumber referral

Hands-free / sensor faucet

  • Battery or AC powered
  • Additional wiring or battery placement
  • Manufacturer-specific installation

Common failure modes during install

Faucet leaks at base

  • Mounting nut not tight
  • Plumber's putty not applied
  • Gasket not seated
  • Solution: re-do the seal

Supply lines leak at connection

  • Insufficient teflon tape
  • Cross-threading
  • Damaged threads
  • Solution: re-do the connection

Faucet doesn't flow

  • Air in lines (open faucet; let water purge)
  • Aerator blocked (clean or replace)
  • Supply line connected wrong way (rare)
  • Shut-off valve not fully open

Hot and cold reversed

  • Customer reports cold from hot tap
  • Supply lines connected wrong way
  • Swap supply lines

Spray head retraction issues

  • Weight too light or too heavy
  • Hose tangled
  • Adjust weight; clear obstruction

Old supply line considerations

If existing supply lines are:

  • Hard chrome or copper: typically reusable, but check for kinks
  • Flexible braided: typically replace as part of faucet install (cheap)
  • Plastic flex: replace; old plastic supplies fail

A new faucet typically includes new supply lines.

Shut-off valve replacement

If shut-off valves are stuck or leaking:

  • Turn off main water supply
  • Cut existing valve (often soldered to pipe)
  • Install new valve (compression or sweat)
  • Test before reinstalling supply lines

Compression valves are easier for handyman work; no soldering needed.

Customer expectations

Set these before you go under the sink, not after something seizes.

  • Old shut-off valves may not survive being turned. Valves that have not moved in fifteen years frequently will not close fully, or they close and then weep at the packing. Say up front that valve replacement is a likely add, with its own price, and that on a house without working stops the water goes off at the main until it is done. Customers accept this readily when they hear it first and badly when they hear it after.
  • A faucet swap is not a leak inspection, but it becomes one. Once the old unit is out you can see the deck, the drain, and the trap. Corroded tailpieces, a cracked basket strainer, and a mushy particleboard cabinet floor are common finds. Show them, price them separately, and let the customer decide.
  • Hole count is not negotiable. A single-hole faucet on a three-hole sink needs a deck plate, and not every faucet offers one that matches. If the customer bought the faucet, confirm the hole pattern before anyone starts.
  • Homeowner-supplied faucets carry homeowner warranty. You warrant your labor. If the cartridge in a big-box faucet drips in six months, that is a manufacturer claim, and the customer needs to know that going in.
  • Discolored water and sputtering for a few minutes is normal. Air and disturbed sediment clear once the lines run. What is not normal is water that stays cloudy or a spout that never reaches full flow, which usually means a clogged aerator or debris in a supply line.
  • Timing. A straightforward swap on working valves is a short visit. A seized valve, a corroded mounting nut, or a drain that comes apart in your hand turns it into a half-day. Quote the swap, name the conditions that extend it, and call before you cross that line.

Finish by showing the customer where the shut-off valves are and how to close them. Most homeowners do not know, and the ten seconds it takes to point is the difference between a drip and a flooded cabinet.
