Garbage Disposal Installation per IPC and UPC
Why this matters
Garbage disposal installs look like a straightforward swap but trigger several code requirements that DIY guides routinely ignore: trap-arm length limits, air-gap or high-loop requirements for dishwasher discharge, dedicated circuit and switch location, and venting for the disposal's drainage path. A code-compliant install passes inspection, prevents siphon-blowback from the disposal into the dishwasher, and avoids the slow-drain-and-clog cycle that an undersized vent produces. The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC, used in much of the western US) and the International Plumbing Code (IPC, used in much of the rest) handle these slightly differently; always work to the AHJ's adopted code.
Code basics
Both UPC and IPC require:
- A P-trap on the disposal discharge line (trap arm length governed by the code)
- A vent serving the trap (either a wet vent, dry vent, or air-admittance valve depending on local code)
- Dishwasher discharge connected to the disposal (or to the sink drain) in a manner that prevents back-siphonage
- Dedicated electrical circuit with appropriate switching, per NEC Article 422 (appliances) and the branch-circuit articles it references
Key differences:
- IPC Section 802.2 (and earlier sections) requires an air gap OR an approved alternative for dishwasher discharge. The "approved alternative" includes a high loop on the dishwasher drain hose.
- UPC Section 807.4 has historically required an air gap explicitly, though some jurisdictions have amended to allow a high loop.
Trap arm length per IPC Table 906.1: maximum trap arm length increases with pipe diameter. For a 1-1/2 inch trap arm, the maximum length from the trap to the vent is 5 feet (specific values vary by code edition).
Electrical requirements per NEC Article 422
Article 422 is the appliance article: it carries the flexible-cord permission that lets a waste disposer be cord-and-plug connected, and the disconnecting-means requirements in its later parts. Work from the article and the adopted cycle rather than from a remembered section number.
The disposal must be served by a circuit appropriate to its motor rating. Most residential disposals (1/3 to 1 HP) are served by a 15- or 20-amp dedicated circuit, though they can share with the dishwasher in some jurisdictions per NEC 210.23.
Switching:
- A wall switch within sight of the disposal (typical residential install) OR
- A cord-and-plug connection to a switched receptacle under the sink, where the switch is wall-mounted
Hardwiring with no readily accessible disconnect is not permitted. The cord-and-plug method with a switched receptacle is the cleanest install because the disposal can be unplugged for service without breaker-panel access.
Equipment list
- Disposal (1/3, 1/2, 3/4, or 1 HP per customer's preference and sink waste volume)
- Installation kit (most disposals ship with mounting hardware; verify the new mounting assembly fits the existing sink flange or replace with the included assembly)
- Plumber's putty or 100 percent silicone for the sink flange seal
- New P-trap, tailpiece, and slip joint connections to match the existing drain configuration
- Dishwasher discharge connector (for the disposal's dishwasher inlet) and high-loop bracket OR separate air-gap fitting
- Dedicated 14 or 12 AWG cable for hardwire (if not using cord-and-plug)
- 10-32 green grounding screw and grounding pigtail (if hardwire). 10-32 is the grounding-screw thread; 6-32 is the device-mounting screw and it will not take the ground lug
- Cord and plug kit (if not using existing cord)
Standard install procedure
Turn off power at the breaker. Verify with a non-contact voltage tester at the existing switch and outlet locations. Lock out the breaker if other people may be in the area.
Disconnect the existing drain at the sink flange and at the trap. Drain residual water into a bucket. Cap the trap arm temporarily if leaving the house dry.
Remove the existing sink flange (if replacing) by loosening the mounting collar from below and pushing the flange up through the sink opening.
Install the new sink flange:
- Apply a 1/4-inch rope of plumber's putty under the flange rim
- Press the flange into the sink drain opening from above
- From below, slide the rubber gasket, fiber gasket, and mounting ring onto the flange
- Snap the mounting ring against the lower flange ring
- Tighten the three mounting screws evenly until the flange seats firmly; excess putty will squeeze out at the rim (wipe clean)
Mount the disposal onto the lower mounting ring:
- Lift the disposal to the mounting ring; rotate to engage the locking lugs
- Turn the disposal until it locks (most units have a "wrenchette" tool included to rotate; some have a wrench-tab arrangement)
Knock out the dishwasher inlet plug if a dishwasher will discharge into the disposal. Use a hammer and the included punch or a screwdriver to break the cast-in plug. Retrieve and discard the plug fragments through the sink opening before sealing the disposal.
Connect the dishwasher discharge:
- Slide the dishwasher hose onto the disposal's dishwasher inlet barb; secure with a hose clamp
- Implement the air gap or high loop per local code. For high loop: secure the dishwasher hose to the underside of the sink countertop at the highest possible point, with the hose looping above the level of the disposal inlet before descending to it. For air gap: install the air gap fitting through the sink or countertop, with the dishwasher discharge entering one side and the disposal-feed side exiting to the disposal inlet.
Connect the P-trap and trap arm:
- Cut the tailpiece to the correct length to reach the trap
- Assemble the trap with slip nuts and washers; do not overtighten (plastic threads strip easily)
- The trap arm must be sloped 1/4 inch per foot to the vent or main drain
- Verify the trap arm length is within code maximum for the pipe diameter
Electrical connection (cord-and-plug if existing receptacle is available; hardwire if direct connection to a cable feed):
For cord-and-plug:
- Knock out the access plate on the bottom of the disposal
- Run the cord through the strain relief and tighten the strain relief
- Connect black to brass screw (hot), white to silver screw (neutral), green to green screw (ground)
- Replace the access plate
- Plug into the switched receptacle
For hardwire:
- Same procedure but with cable instead of cord
- Verify a disconnect (switch) is provided within sight, per the disconnecting-means provisions of NEC Article 422
Re-energize the circuit and test:
- Run cold water through the disposal
- Switch on the disposal; it should start immediately with a strong motor sound
- Verify no leaks at the sink flange, the disposal discharge, the dishwasher inlet (after running the dishwasher), and the P-trap
- Verify the dishwasher (if connected) drains properly through the disposal and no back-siphonage into the dishwasher tub
Common code violations
- Dishwasher drain hose run flat into the disposal inlet. No air gap and no high loop means dirty sink water can siphon back into the dishwasher. It is the most frequently written violation on this install and the fix costs a hose clamp and five minutes. Use whichever of the two your jurisdiction accepts, and know which one that is before you get to the sink.
- The knockout plug left in the dishwasher inlet. The dishwasher will not drain and the homeowner blames the appliance. Knock it out and fish the slug out of the grind chamber, because if you leave it in there it will find the impellers.
- No accessible disconnect. Hardwired straight to a cable feed with no switch in sight and no plug to pull is not a legal install. Either a wall switch within sight or a cord-and-plug into a switched receptacle.
- S-trap instead of a P-trap. Very common on older sinks that get a disposal added. An S-trap siphons its own seal and puts sewer gas into the kitchen. If there is no vent to tie into, use an air-admittance valve where the code allows it, or add a vent.
- Trap arm too long or improperly sloped. Beyond the code maximum from trap to vent, the trap loses its seal. Slope of about a quarter inch per foot, and no dips built out of extension pieces stacked to reach the drain.
- Flexible corrugated tubing used as the trap or trap arm. It is not permitted, it catches solids, and it is exactly what a disposal will fill.
- No GFCI where the receptacle requires it. Kitchen receptacles serving countertop and, in current code cycles, receptacles under the sink, fall under the GFCI rules. Read the adopted cycle rather than the last house you did.
- Vent tied in downstream of the trap on a double-bowl sink, so the disposal side pulls water out of the other bowl. The customer will describe it as gurgling in the other sink, and the piping is what needs redoing, not the disposal.
