Binding Door Hinge Replacement Decision Tree

Why this matters

A door that binds, rubs the jamb, or springs open is rarely a hinge problem at first glance, but in 7 out of 10 calls it is. The decision a handyman has to make at the door is: tighten the existing hinges, replace screws with longer fasteners into the framing, replace one hinge, replace all three hinges, or refer the customer to a carpenter because the door slab has bowed or the jamb has racked. Getting this wrong costs an hour of plane-and-shim work that did not need to happen, or worse, a closed work order that re-opens in two weeks when the same door drags again. This decision tree separates the four root causes (loose screws, sagging top hinge, hinge wear, jamb shift) and routes each to the actual fix.

Symptom mapping

Door drags at the top corner near the latch side: classic loose top hinge, screws pulled out of the jack stud. This is 60% of binding-door calls. The top hinge carries most of the door weight and the original 3/4-inch screws shipped from the manufacturer only catch the jamb, not the framing behind it. Once the screw holes wallow, the top of the door drops and the latch-side top corner rubs.

Door drags at the bottom corner on the latch side: bottom hinge issue or the door slab itself has cupped. Less common than top-corner drag. Check the bottom hinge screws first; if tight, look at the door slab in profile - cupped slabs bind at the floor.

Door springs open after closing: jamb has racked, OR a hinge has been over-driven and the door is hinge-bound (the slab cannot fully close because the hinge knuckles are crushed into the jamb mortise). Look at the hinge gap with the door closed; 1/16-inch gap is normal, 0-inch gap with daylight at the latch side is hinge-bound.

Door rubs on the strike-side jamb full length: jamb has shifted in toward the door OR the door has swelled. Strip a 1/4-inch ribbon off the jamb is the wrong answer here - find the cause first.

Hinge pins squeak: lubrication, not replacement. White lithium grease or graphite powder on the pin. Skip the diagnostic.

Step 1: the long-screw test

Open the door 90 degrees. Look at the top hinge while a helper pushes the latch edge up. If the hinge moves visibly toward the framing, the top screws are loose in the jamb.

Remove one jamb-leaf screw from the top hinge, the one nearest the middle of the leaf (jamb leaf only, not the door leaf). Replace with a 3-inch #9 wood screw - long enough to pass through the jamb (3/4-inch material) and bury 2 inches into the jack stud behind. Drive flush, not over-tight. The 3-inch screw catches structural framing instead of just the jamb veneer.

Test the door close. In 60% of binding-door calls, this single screw replacement fixes the problem in under 5 minutes. If the top corner still drags, replace the rest of the top hinge's jamb-leaf screws with 3-inch screws.

Why the jamb leaf and not the door leaf: the door-leaf screws drive into the edge of the door slab (1-3/4-inch thick solid or laminated wood) and 3/4-inch screws hold fine there. Going to 3-inch screws in the door leaf can split the slab edge.

Step 2: the hinge-gap inspection

If long screws did not fix it, pull the hinge pin on the top hinge (tap upward with a 16d nail set on the underside of the pin head). Look at the knuckles when the pin is out.

Wear visible as oval-shaped knuckle holes or a hinge that flops when the pin is removed: the hinge is worn out and needs replacement. Residential hinges average a 30-year service life; high-traffic doors (bathroom, kid's bedroom) wear out at 15-20 years.

Mortise depth wrong: hold a hinge leaf in the mortise. Should sit flush with the jamb or door edge, not below it, not above it. A hinge sitting proud by 1/16 inch is hinge-bound and the door will spring open. A hinge sitting too deep (mortise cut too aggressive on a prior replacement) means the door binds against the strike jamb.

Hinge type and size: standard residential is 4-inch by 4-inch square-corner or 1/4-inch radius-corner on exterior and heavier doors, 3-1/2 inch on most interior doors. Measure the existing leaf, do not assume. Within one size class, mainstream residential hinges (Stanley, Hager BB1191, and the Home Depot / Lowes private-label lines) are dimensionally interchangeable, but corner radius and leaf gauge are not, so match those to the existing mortise. Older homes may have 3-1/2-inch hinges; do not substitute 4-inch in a 3-1/2-inch mortise without re-cutting both leaves.

Step 3: replace one hinge or all three

Replace one hinge if: only the top hinge shows wear, screws are tight in the other two, gaps look even at the middle and bottom hinges.

Replace all three if: the door is over 30 years old and any hinge shows wear, the hinge knuckle finish is different (mismatched paint, scuffs, replacements over the years), or the customer is paying for a hinge upgrade (brass to satin nickel, plain bearing to ball bearing). Hinges are sold in matched sets; mixing brands or wear states on one door always shows.

Always replace pins on a replaced hinge - never mix old pin with new hinge or vice versa. Hinge pins are not standardized across brands.

Always use the manufacturer-supplied screws or upgrade to 3-inch on the jamb leaf top hinge. Cheap drywall screws under finish hinges will rust and stain the finish within 2 years on bathroom doors.

Step 4: when it is not the hinge

Door is hinge-bound (springs open and hinge gap is 0 at the knuckle): shim the hinge OUT from the mortise with cardboard or a hinge shim. One layer of business card behind the offending hinge solves most hinge-bound cases. Do not chisel the mortise deeper - the chisel reduces the wood you can shim against next time.

Jamb has racked (jamb-side gap is uneven top-to-bottom): house settlement. Look at the floor and the casing. If the floor slopes toward the door and the casing has cracked at the miter, the foundation is moving. Tell the customer in writing - this is not a hinge fix and shaving the door is a stopgap that will re-occur in 18-24 months.

Slab has swelled from moisture: bathroom doors and exterior doors after rainy seasons. Wait for the slab to dry (2-4 weeks of dry weather) before planing. If the customer needs the door now, plane the strike edge only - never the hinge edge - and seal the planed edge with primer to prevent the next swell.

Slab has bowed or cupped (look down the edge with one eye, like sighting a board): the slab is failing. Replace the slab. A bowed hollow-core door cannot be straightened.

Step 5: hinge upgrade options

Standard plain-bearing hinge: residential default. Stanley, Hager, Schlage import lines. Adequate for 90% of interior doors.

Ball-bearing hinge: bearings between the knuckles carry the door weight on a rolling surface instead of a sliding one. Worth the upgrade on any heavy slab (solid core, exterior, tall doors), on any door fitted with a closer, and on high-cycle doors. It is the standard answer when a plain-bearing hinge has already worn out once on the same door, because the load that killed the first one has not gone anywhere.

Spring hinge (self-closing): a spring in the barrel closes the door on its own, tension adjustable with a pin and a hex key. This is the hinge for the garage-to-house door, which IRC R302.5.1 requires to be self-closing and self-latching. Typical practice is one spring hinge plus two conventional hinges on a standard door, tensioned just enough to close and latch reliably and no more; over-tensioned spring hinges slam, wear the latch, and get disabled by the homeowner. Follow the door manufacturer's and the hinge manufacturer's instructions on how many spring hinges the slab needs, and re-check the latch after adjusting.

Non-removable pin (NRP) hinge: a set screw in the barrel captures the pin so it cannot be driven out from the hinge side. Required in practice on any out-swinging exterior door, because on those the hinge barrels are outside. Cheap, and it closes an obvious hole in a door the customer just paid to secure.

Heavy-duty and commercial-grade hinges: thicker leaves, larger knuckles, higher BHMA grade. Reach for these when the slab is genuinely heavy or the traffic is commercial. On residential work the more common failure is the jamb, not the hinge, so spend the money on framing-length screws first.

Finish upgrades (satin nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, matte black): cosmetic, and the reason for half the hinge calls that are not about binding. Replace all hinges on a door as a set, and price the whole opening including the strike and the knob or lever if the customer wants the finish to match.
