Interior Door Adjustment and Replacement
Purpose
Most sticking doors are not sticking doors. They are frames that moved, hinges that loosened, or strikes that fell out of position, and the slab is the innocent party. The failure mode this procedure exists to prevent is a tech reaching for a plane in the first ten minutes: material off a slab does not go back on, so a door planed to fit a racked frame leaves a permanent gap once the frame is corrected, and the shop owns a door.
The standing instruction is diagnose, then fasten, then adjust the frame, then adjust the strike, and only then remove material. Following that order, most calls close with a screwdriver and a file.
Scope
Covers interior swinging doors in existing openings: bind and latch diagnosis, hinge and frame correction, strike adjustment, the adjust-versus-replace decision, and replacement by new slab or prehung unit.
Does not cover exterior doors, whose weatherseal, threshold and sill pan requirements are a different job; lockset and deadbolt boring, which the doorknob and deadbolt article owns; fire-rated assemblies beyond the step 5 stop; or pocket, bifold and barn hardware.

Procedure
1. Measure before you touch anything, and write the numbers down. Take the reveal at head-hinge, head-centre, head-latch, latch-top, latch-middle and latch-bottom, plus the floor clearance, then check hinge jamb plumb in both planes and the opening's two diagonals. Acceptance: a written set of seven readings and two diagonals. The target is about 1/8 inch at the head and both sides, with 1/2 inch of floor clearance over hard flooring and about 3/4 inch over carpet; where the door serves a return-air path the undercut the system requires governs instead. What wrong looks like: calling it "sticks at the top" without measuring, then correcting the wrong end. Stop rule: diagonals differing by more than about 1/4 inch means the frame is racked and the correction belongs at the frame, not the slab; racking with a structural cause outside the opening goes to the lead first.
2. Fix the fasteners before anything else, because that is what fails first. Support the open door and check every hinge leaf for loose or spinning screws. Replace one screw per leaf on the jamb side with one long enough to reach the trimmer stud, commonly 2-1/2 to 3 inches, drawing it up progressively rather than in one pull. Acceptance: every replacement screw meets firm resistance and stops with the leaf tight to the jamb, head flush. What wrong looks like: a screw that spins freely, meaning it crossed a shim gap and found nothing; driving it harder then crushes the jamb inward and pulls the frame out of plumb. Hazard in this step: never pull the screws from both leaves of a hinge at once and never strip all hinges before the slab is supported; drive the pins and lift the slab with the leaves intact, and set it on edge against a wall, never leaning where it can slide flat onto somebody. Stop rule: a spinning screw stops the step; fill the shim gap with a solid block or glued dowel behind the hinge, let it hold, then re-drive.
3. Correct the frame with shims, not with the slab. Where a jamb is bowed or out of plumb, adjust the shims behind the hinge or latch jamb in the smallest increment that changes the reading. Acceptance: hinge jamb plumb within about 1/8 inch over the opening height, and reveals within about 1/32 inch of the 1/8 inch target at head and hinge side. What wrong looks like: shimming a bow out at the middle while the ends stay put, which just moves the bind. Hazard in this step: casing removal splits trim and drives finish nails through into a hand, so cut the caulk line first, lever against a block rather than the wall finish, and pull nails through the back of the casing rather than punching them out the face. Stop rule: a frame that will not come to plumb because the rough opening itself is out stops the step; price a prehung replacement rather than chasing it with shims.
4. Bring the latch to the strike, not the door to the strike. With the reveals right, close the door slowly and watch where the latch bolt meets the strike, then move the strike plate, file its opening in the direction needed, or shim behind it. Acceptance: the bolt extends fully into the strike with the door held closed, no rattle against the stop, and it stays latched against a firm hand push. What wrong looks like: a strike relieved by more than about 1/16 inch of filing, the signal that the frame is still wrong and the strike is absorbing it. Stop rule: more than 1/16 inch of correction at the strike sends you back to step 3.
5. Remove material from the slab only when the frame is right and the door is not part of a rated assembly. Acceptance before any plane or saw: reveals within tolerance at the head and hinge side, the bind isolated to one edge, and the door confirmed unrated. Hazard and hard stop in this step: a fire-rated door and frame assembly may only be modified within the limits of its own listing, and NFPA 80, in the edition your authority having jurisdiction has adopted, binds the building and reaches you through the inspector, so planing or cutting one out of its listing voids the assembly; the garage-to-dwelling door is the one a handyman meets most often, and the IRC requires opening protection there at Section R302.5.1 in the edition your jurisdiction has adopted. Second hazard: paint disturbance on a door in target housing built before 1978, including cutting the bottom, fires the EPA rule at 40 CFR Part 745 Subpart E, and the item stops and routes to its own SOP. Stop rule: any doubt about whether a door is rated stops the step; the label is on the hinge edge or the top rail, and an unlabelled door in a rated location is treated as rated until the authority having jurisdiction says otherwise.
6. Make the adjust-versus-replace call against stated criteria, out loud, with the customer. Replace rather than adjust when the slab is delaminated at a face or a stile, when the lock stile is split through at the bore, when the correction needed exceeds the reveal budget left, or when the slab is warped beyond its manufacturer's tolerance. Acceptance: the criterion that decided it, named on the ticket. What wrong looks like: adjusting a warped slab, which fits at one point of contact and binds at another because a warped door does not lie in a plane. Stop rule: most door warranties treat warp beyond about 1/4 inch across the door face as a defect and anything under it as within tolerance, so check the warranty for the door in front of you; where it is still in force the claim is worth more than the labour.
7. Replace to the method the opening supports. A sound plumb frame takes a new slab: transfer hinge locations and bore positions from the old slab and cut the hinge gains and latch mortise to depth. A frame that is out, rotted or the wrong size takes a prehung unit: set it plumb on the hinge jamb first, shim and fasten behind each hinge, confirm the reveal, then fasten the head and latch jamb. Acceptance: the same six reveals within about 1/32 inch of the 1/8 inch target, and the door stays put when released anywhere in its swing. What wrong looks like: fastening the latch jamb before the reveal is confirmed, which locks in a taper you then have to undo. Stop rule: if the reveal will not come within tolerance after a second shim adjustment, the opening is out beyond what setting a unit will correct, so stop and price the opening correction as its own task rather than drawing the jamb in with fasteners. Hazard in this step: a hollow core slab is a one-person lift for most techs while a solid core of the same size commonly runs two to three times the weight and is not, so check the product weight before lifting over a stair or into a header, and keep fingers clear of the hinge edge as the slab goes in.
8. Demonstrate operation to the customer and record the final numbers. Acceptance: the door swings from any position without drifting open or closed, latches on a normal push, clears the flooring through its full swing, and the six reveals and floor clearance are recorded as-left. What wrong looks like: demonstrating only that it closes, when the complaint was that it swung open on its own. Stop rule: a drifting door means the frame is still out of plumb in the swing plane, and that goes back to step 3 rather than an explanation at handover.
The record this produces
Two sets of the same seven measurements, before and as-left: six reveals plus floor clearance, together with the two diagonals, the jamb plumb reading, what changed at each step, and the criterion that decided adjust versus replace.
The office reads the criterion when the customer calls back about another door in the same house: doors all racking one way is a building problem, visible only across tickets. The next tech reads the before-and-after set to know whether the door drifted or held, which separates a settling frame from a loose hinge. The shop reads the replace criteria in aggregate, because repeated warp replacements from one supplier is a purchasing conversation.
Worked pass: 32 inch hollow core bedroom door, binding and not latching
Complaint: rubs at the top corner on the latch side and will not stay latched.
Step 1 readings, in inches: head reveal 1/8 at the hinge end, 1/8 at centre, 1/32 at the latch end. Latch side 1/32 at the top, 1/8 at the middle, 3/16 at the bottom. Floor clearance 1/2 over hardwood. Diagonals measured 86-13/16 and 87-1/16, a 1/4 inch difference, so the frame is racked and the top hinge has dropped away from the trimmer. No structural cause visible at the header or the adjacent wall, so it stayed with the tech.
Step 2 FAILED. The top hinge had one loose screw. The first 3 inch replacement screw went in and then spun free with no resistance, which under the acceptance condition is not seated. The stop rule fired: the tech backed it out and probed, finding roughly 3/4 inch of shim gap between jamb and trimmer at that hinge, which is why the original short screws had nothing to hold and why the jamb crept inward at the top over the years.
The correction was cheap: a hardwood block cut to the gap, glued behind the hinge, then the screw re-driven into solid material until it met firm resistance and stopped flush.
Re-measured after step 2: head reveal 1/8, 1/8, 1/8 across. Latch side 1/8 at the top, 1/8 at the middle, 5/32 at the bottom. The bind was gone and the diagonals had closed to within about 1/16 inch, so step 3 was recorded as not required rather than skipped.
Step 4 still had work. With the frame back where it belonged the bolt landed about 1/16 inch low against the strike opening and would catch but not fully engage. The strike was relieved 1/16 inch downward with a file, at the limit the acceptance condition allows, and that reading went on the ticket because a strike at the limit is the first thing to check if this door is reported again. The bolt then extended fully and the door stayed latched against a firm push without rattling against the stop.
Step 5 never fired: no material came off the slab. As-left readings recorded, customer shown the door swinging and latching from both sides.
