Shower Door and Bath Hardware Installation

Purpose

A shower enclosure is tempered glass hanging off anchors set through tile into a wall that gets wet every day. Both of its failure modes are slow. An anchor set dry wicks water into the substrate behind the tile and nobody sees it until the board is soft and the tile sounds hollow. A panel with a nicked edge carries that nick as a stress riser and lets go weeks later, into a tub, usually with somebody in it.

This procedure guarantees the glass is inspected before it is lifted into position, the opening is measured against the kit's published adjustment range before anything is cut, and every penetration in a wet wall is sealed at the substrate rather than smeared over a bracket afterwards.

Standing instruction: nothing is drilled, cut, ground or nipped on tempered glass, ever, and no anchor goes into a wet wall dry.

Scope

Covers framed and semi-frameless shower and tub door kits sold as a complete unit, sliding and pivot, and bath hardware mounted in wet walls: towel bars, rings, hooks, corner shelves, and shower and curtain rods.

Does not cover heavy frameless enclosures with fabricated panels and wall-mounted hinges, which are a glazier's work; replacement of an individual glass panel; grab bars and anything a person puts body weight on, which go to the grab bar and handrail procedure; or tile and waterproofing repair, which stops this procedure rather than folding into it.

Procedure

1. Identify the substrate and the waterproofing before you plan a single hole. Acceptance: substrate named as cement board, glass-mat gypsum, mud bed, a one-piece fiberglass unit or a plastic surround over open stud bays; tile thickness measured at a cut edge; and any surface-applied membrane noted. What wrong looks like: a lag-style anchor driven into a fiberglass surround with nothing but an air gap behind it. Stop rule: any soft, drummy or stained area within about 6 in of a planned hole is a waterproofing question for the lead and the install waits, because an anchor into wet board never gets tight. Hazard: probing a suspect area punches the membrane, so keep the probe shallow and in a grout joint rather than through a tile face.

2. Inspect every panel under light before anything is lifted into place. Run a light along all four edges of each panel and look for chips, nicks and shells. Acceptance: every edge of every panel inspected and recorded as clean, with any defect photographed and that panel set aside. Tempered glass holds its strength in a compressed surface skin, so an edge nick is a stress riser that can let go hours or days later with nobody touching it. What wrong looks like: a chipped corner hidden inside the track on the theory that the track supports it. Stop rule: a nicked panel is rejected and returned; and nothing on this job drills, cuts, grinds or nips tempered glass, because that fractures the whole panel at once. Hazard: a failing panel comes apart into a shower of fragments, so panels are carried upright on edge by two people in cut-resistant gloves and eye protection, never flat and never leaned on a tub rim.

3. Measure the opening at three heights and check it against the kit's range. Acceptance: width measured at the top, middle and bottom of the intended track run, both jambs checked for plumb over the header height, the tub rim or curb checked for level end to end, and all of it compared against the adjustment range printed in the kit instructions. What wrong looks like: one measurement taken at the tub rim, usually the widest point on an out-of-plumb alcove. Stop rule: an opening outside the kit's stated range is the wrong kit and it goes back; it does not get shimmed into fitting, because a shimmed jamb track leaks where the enclosure is meant to contain water. Hazard: working over a tub, so a non-slip mat goes in before anyone steps in and nothing is set on the rim where it can slide off onto a foot.

4. Cut the header and jamb tracks to the smallest measured width. Acceptance: cut length computed from the smallest of the three measurements minus the deduction the kit instructions state, cut square, deburred, and the length written on the ticket before the saw runs. What wrong looks like: cutting to the largest of the three, which binds at the tightest point and cannot be undone. Stop rule: a computed length that disagrees with the instructions means re-measuring rather than trimming to fit. Hazard: cutting aluminum throws hot chips at eye level and leaves an edge that cuts like a blade, so eye protection goes on before the cut and the burr is filed before the piece is carried.

5. Lay out the wall holes and drill them wet or with collection, never dry. Acceptance: hole positions transferred from the track, checked plumb, and drilled with a bit intended for tile, started through tape at low speed with the hammer function off until the tile is fully penetrated. What wrong looks like: a hammer drill started on a glazed face, which spalls a crater no escutcheon covers. Stop rule: a tile that chips or cracks at the first hole stops the pattern and the layout is reassessed. Hazard matched to the route: drilling tile and cement board releases respirable crystalline silica, which is inhalation, so gloves and a face shield are the wrong control and water at the bit or a shroud with collection is the right one. Work of this kind normally sits under 29 CFR 1926.1153, with the general industry twin at 1910.1053, the split following the activity rather than the building; any respirator goes under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134.

6. Bed every wet-wall anchor in sealant, then set it. Acceptance: each hole filled with sealant before the anchor goes in so the shank is bedded and sealant squeezes out under the bracket flange rather than being wiped onto the tile afterwards, anchor type matched to the substrate from step 1, and no anchor set dry. What wrong looks like: a bead run around the outside of a bracket after it is screwed down, which seals water in behind the flange instead of out of the hole. Stop rule: an anchor that spins in an oversized hole is relocated or replaced with a larger listed anchor for that substrate, never bedded in adhesive instead. Hazard: some sealants cure by releasing acetic acid or solvent vapour into a small unventilated bathroom, so read the label, ventilate to outdoors while tooling and curing, and treat eye or airway irritation as a reason to air the room rather than push through.

7. Set the panels, adjust the rollers, and never let metal touch glass bare. Acceptance: the door running full travel without contacting a jamb, the strike-side gap even top to bottom within about 1/8 in, the door hanging plumb after roller adjustment, and every kit cushion, bumper and setting block in place so no fastener or frame edge bears directly on glass. What wrong looks like: a roller run to the end of its adjustment to cure a bind, leaving nothing to adjust when the door settles. Stop rule: a door that still binds at the end of roller travel is a track or opening problem and returns to the step 3 measurements rather than being forced. Hazard: metal bearing on glass is a common cause of a break that looks spontaneous later, and lifting a panel into a header over a tub is two people in gloves with the tub matted and nobody else in the room.

8. Cure, tag the shower out of service, then close the water test and hand over. Acceptance: the sealant's cure-before-water-exposure time read off its label and written on the ticket, the shower tagged out of service in writing with the time it may be used, and once cured a 5 minute run with the door closed followed by a dry towel drawn along the outside of the bottom track and both jamb tracks coming up dry. Where the cure runs past the visit, the customer runs the shower and the shop closes the dry check on its follow-up call, recorded with its date. What wrong looks like: a bead wiped and the shower used the same evening, which pulls uncured sealant out of the joint. Stop rule: any damp on the towel fails the install and the enclosure comes apart at the leaking penetration rather than getting another bead outside it. Hazard: any towel bar or hook fitted on this visit is not a grab bar and will not take a fall load, so say that to the customer in those words and route them to the grab bar procedure.

The record this produces

Substrate and tile thickness, any waterproofing finding and who it went to, the edge inspection result per panel, the three opening widths with both plumb readings and the tub level check, the kit's published adjustment range and whether the opening fell inside it, the computed and actual cut length, hole count and how they were drilled, anchor type and that each was bedded, the strike gap top and bottom, the sealant cure time from the label, and the dated dry check with who performed the run.

The office reads the adjustment-range line when a customer asks why their kit went back. The next tech reads the anchor type and substrate before drilling anything else in that wall.

Worked pass: 1998 alcove tub, customer-supplied framed slider

Complaint: customer bought a sliding tub door kit online and wants it fitted, plus a towel bar and a robe hook.

Step 1: cement board confirmed at a cut edge behind the escutcheon, tile measured 5/16 in thick, no drumminess along the planned track lines. Step 2: both panels inspected under a light, all four edges clean on each, recorded panel by panel.

Step 3: opening measured at three heights along the intended track run. Top 59-3/8 in, middle 59-1/4 in, bottom 59-1/8 in, so the smallest is 59-1/8 in. The kit instructions gave an adjustment range of 56 in to 59 in.

Step 3 FAILED. 59-1/8 in against a stated maximum of 59 in is 1/8 in over the top of the range. Under the stop rule the kit is the wrong kit and does not get shimmed into fitting, so nothing was cut. A cut header cannot go back, which is exactly why the check sits before step 4.

The customer was shown the tape at all three heights and the range printed in their own instructions, and the kit went back under the customer-supplied materials procedure. A kit with a 57 in to 60 in range was ordered for a return visit. The towel bar and robe hook were fitted this visit so the trip carried work, and the customer was told plainly that neither is a grab bar.

Return visit: jambs measured 1/8 in out of plumb on the left and 3/16 in on the right over the 60 in header height, both inside the 1/4 in the new kit allows. Header cut to the smallest width less the kit's stated 1/4 in deduction, so 59-1/8 minus 1/4 leaves 58-7/8 in, cut square and deburred.

Step 5: six holes, three per jamb track, drilled with a diamond bit run wet through tape at low speed with the hammer off. No spalling at any of the six. Step 6: all six filled with sealant before the anchors went in, sealant visible under both flanges, anchors matched to cement board.

Step 7: strike-side gap measured 3/32 in at the top and 1/8 in at the bottom, a difference of 1/32 in and inside the 1/8 in gate. Door ran full travel with no jamb contact, cushions all in place, no metal bearing on glass.

Step 8: sealant label read 24 hours before water exposure, written on the ticket, and the shower tagged out of service with the time it could be used. The office called at 48 hours; the customer had run it, and the towel check along the bottom track and both jambs came up dry, recorded with its date.
