Siding and Trim Patch Repair
Purpose
Cladding is not the waterproofing. The water-resistive barrier behind it is, and the siding is a rain screen keeping most of the weather off it. So a siding patch is a repair of the drainage plane; the new piece is the last and least important layer. Staple a square of housewrap over the hole without lapping it and the leak has moved six inches, not gone.
Scope
Covers patch repair of residential and light commercial cladding and trim: lap and panel siding, corner boards, frieze and rake, plus barrier and sheathing repair inside the opening. Does not cover full-wall re-siding, structural sheathing or framing replacement, roof-plane work, window or door removal, or a wall whose source is above the patch and unresolved. Sealant selection belongs to the caulking and sealant renewal SOP, regulated lead work to the pre-1978 paint disturbance SOP.

Procedure
1. Identify the material and the build year, and close the two gates before any tool starts. Read the profile and thickness against the build year and leak history the office pulled. Acceptance: material on the ticket as vinyl, fiber cement, wood, hardboard, aluminum or asbestos-cement-suspect, with the build year beside it. Wrong looks like calling brittle gray lap board "old fiber cement" and reaching for a saw. Stop rule: asbestos-cement-era cladding that is brittle, dense and shows no wood grain is presumed asbestos-containing until sampled, and nothing gets cut, drilled, sanded, broken or washed; that is 29 CFR 1926.1101 work and it leaves the shop. Second stop rule: past 20 sq ft of disturbed pre-1978 exterior paint, RRP requires a certified firm, a certified renovator, its work practices and cleaning verification, so the job books through the pre-1978 paint disturbance SOP. Hazard: pre-1978 paint runs two duties on two triggers. Worker exposure is 29 CFR 1926.62, which presumes you are over the action level for manual demolition, scraping, sanding and heat-gun work on lead paint until an assessment says otherwise; respirators and hygiene come from it. Occupant protection is EPA's RRP rule at 40 CFR 745 Subpart E, whose minor repair exception below that same 20 sq ft line never reaches its prohibited practices: open-flame burning or torching, machine sanding or grinding without HEPA exhaust, and a heat gun at or above 1100 F.
2. Find the source, measure the extent, then decide whether this is a patch. Probe with an awl and take pin-meter readings above, below and each side of the damage, and trace the water path above it. Acceptance: penetration in eighths and moisture percentage at each point on a sketch, the named suspected source, and pin-meter baselines at the interior points below the damage, taken before the wall opens, the last moment an untested interior reading exists for step 7. Patch limit, a shop default: damage inside one course or panel each way, sheathing softness under about 4 sq ft, no soft framing member. Wrong looks like probing only the stained board, which is downstream of every leak. Stop rule: past that limit, or an unresolved source above, the lead names the trade and ends the shop's work; a closed wall over a live leak is a warranty the shop cannot survive. Hazard: probing overhead drops debris and rusted fastener heads, so eye protection and a hard hat, and nobody under the probe line.
3. Open the wall without damaging what stays. Release tool for interlocking vinyl, lap siding cut at a course line with blade depth set to material thickness only, trim pulled with a flat bar over a shim. Acceptance: piece out, adjacent courses undamaged and still locked or nailed, no new kerfs in the sheathing face. Wrong looks like a blade set to 1 in on 5/16 in board, cutting the barrier and the sheathing you are about to depend on. Stop rule: a kerf into structural sheathing gets that sheathing patched to bearing on framing, not taped. Hazard: cutting, drilling or sanding fiber cement releases respirable crystalline silica, so use the control 29 CFR 1926.1153 Table 1 names for a handheld power saw cutting fiber-cement board with a blade 8 in or less: a saw with a commercially available dust collection system, used outdoors only. That is the entire control, and the row calls for no respirator at either duration. Other Table 1 rows do turn on whether the task passes four hours, so read the row for the tool in hand; a respirator any row requires runs under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134. On pre-1978 painted wood the same act is a lead-dust route, so hand tools, a ground drop and wet cleanup rather than dry sweeping. Never cut vinyl with an abrasive wheel or free it with a torch, because heating PVC releases hydrogen chloride.
4. Repair the barrier so every lap sheds down and out. Cut the barrier back to sound dry material, then patch with upper sheets over lower and side laps behind the downhill sheet, taping only where its manufacturer permits. Acceptance: at every edge a continuous downhill path with no upstream edge exposed, side laps at or beyond the stated minimum, patch dry when covered. Wrong looks like a square of wrap taped on all four sides, which is a bathtub, not a barrier. Stop rule: a reverse lap or missing head flashing running past the patch is the source, not a defect inside it, so the opening is enlarged with authorization or the job goes to the lead. Hazard: the wall is open here, so it gets covered and fastened before the tech leaves it for any reason and before end of day, never over a rain forecast.
5. Set the patch piece by the manufacturer's fastening rule. Match profile, thickness and exposure, then fasten to that product's instructions: vinyl hangs and moves, so the fastener goes through the slot center with about 1/32 in under the head and the panel is never drawn tight; fiber cement and wood take the fastener type, spacing and edge distance the sheet states. Acceptance: fastener type, spacing and edge distance recorded as read, and the panel sliding freely by hand where it is designed to move. Wrong looks like a vinyl panel nailed dead tight, which buckles in the first heat and waves from the driveway. Stop rule: no instruction sheet for the product in hand stops the step until one is pulled; the fastening rule is what the warranty runs on. Hazard: a contact-trip nailer fires when its nose is bumped, so the air line comes off whenever it is set down, and nothing is fastened from a ladder while reaching past the rails.
6. Leave the drainage gaps the product calls for, and seal only where it says. Hold the stated clearance where cladding meets horizontal flashing and treat butt joints as the instructions describe. Acceptance: measured clearance at each flashing matching the instructions, bottom edges and drainage laps open, sealant only where the sheet names it. Wrong looks like a neat bead across the bottom of the patch and along the head flashing, the most common way a good patch rots the wall behind it. Stop rule: a joint the tech cannot form with the pieces on the truck stops the step rather than getting substituted. Hazard: sealants and primers carry inhalation and skin routes their labels describe, so read the label before the cartridge opens and work upwind; a respirator the label names is a condition of use.
7. Water test the patch, restore what you took off, and close out on what was found. Run a garden hose at low volume above the patch for at least 10 minutes, wetting from the top down, check the opening's low point and the interior below it, then put back every downspout, shutter, light or gutter section removed for access, refastened to its original points. Acceptance: no moisture at the low point, no rise against the step 2 interior baselines, items removed and reinstalled recorded as a matched pair, and the ticket carrying the source finding, the barrier photograph and the test result. Wrong looks like a two-minute rinse aimed at the new board, which tests nothing that fails in real weather, on a ticket reading "replaced siding" with no source named. Stop rule: any wetting fails the patch, returns it to step 4 once, and a second failure ends the shop's work with the finding in writing. Hazard: water on a wall means water at the receptacles, fixtures and meter below it, so keep the stream off every enclosure, and a soaked device has its circuit opened at the panel before anyone touches it.

The office reads the source line on a callback, because a patch under an unresolved source is not a warranty item; the next tech reads the barrier photograph, the only evidence the lap was right.
Worked pass: 1968 cedar lap wall under a gable rake
Step 1: 1/2 in bevel cedar, painted, 1968 from the county record, so the paint is presumed lead-based and the worker route applies from here. Not asbestos-cement.
Step 2: three courses read soft, awl in past 3/8 in, meter 26 to 31 percent. Sheathing behind soft over roughly 2 sq ft, under the 4 sq ft patch limit, framing firm. Interior baselines taken at two points below the damage. Suspected source is the rake trim above, not the boards.
Disturbed area before any tool: 7-1/4 in is this bevel's face width, not its exposure; at the 1 in lap the exposure is 6-1/4 in. Three courses is 3 x 6.25, or 18.75 in, which is 1.56 ft, times the 6 ft width, giving 9.4 sq ft, under the 20 sq ft threshold. So the RRP minor repair exception applies, the prohibited practices stay off the table, and removal stayed hand-tool with a ground drop and wet cleanup under 1926.62.
Step 3: three courses off with a flat bar over a shim, no power sanding, adjacent courses intact, no kerf.
Step 4 FAILED and took its stop rule. The felt behind the rake was lapped backwards for about 4 ft, upper sheet tucked behind lower, running past the 6 ft opening and up under trim the shop was not authorized to remove: the step 2 suspected source, confirmed. The tech did not tape it. Photographs and the probe map went to the lead, who priced enlarging the opening and resetting the rake trim as an authorized line; approved that afternoon, the felt was re-lapped to shed down and out, and only then did step 5 start. Without that authorization the wall would have been covered and fastened and the visit ended there.
Steps 5 and 6: replacement bevel matched at 7-1/4 in face width, set to the same 6-1/4 in exposure, fastened to the type and spacing on the instruction sheet, clearance at the rake flashing held to the same sheet, bottom edges open, sealant only at the two vertical butt joints it names. Step 7: hose run 12 minutes above the repair, low point dry, the two interior points unchanged from their step 2 baselines, passed; one downspout section and one light fixture removed for access, both reinstalled and recorded as the pair.
