Flue and Venting Inspection on a Service Call

Purpose

This standing instruction settles two things before anyone judges a vent: what category the appliance actually is, and whether the vent still drafts when the house is working against it. Both get skipped, and skipping either one is how a vent passes on a service call and spills on laundry day.

Vent category is set by two properties and only two: whether the vent operates at positive or non-positive static pressure, and whether the flue gases condense. Draft hardware and the presence of an inducer are correlated with category and do not define it. A tech who classifies on the correlate can put an induced-draft appliance in the wrong category and approve a vent material its listing does not allow.

Safety actions that gate the work

  • Personal carbon monoxide monitor on before you enter the mechanical space, with the ambient reading recorded with the appliance off. This whole procedure is about the path combustion products take, and the reading with the appliance off is the only one that describes what the occupants were in.
  • If ambient carbon monoxide is elevated, or spillage is visible with occupants present, the appliance goes off and people leave the space before any further testing.
  • Prove the control circuit dead before opening a control compartment, proved on a known live source before and after per NFPA 70E-2021, 120.5, with work practices at 29 CFR 1910.333(b)(2), and close the appliance gas cock before disturbing a connector.
  • Breaking down a chimney connector or clearing a blockage is the disturbance step, not the access step. Soot and flaked liner go airborne when a joint is separated or a chimney is rodded, so use a HEPA-filtered vacuum at the deposit rather than compressed air, wear eye protection, and use respiratory protection under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134. Older connector cement and chimney parging may be material you cannot identify, so do not grind or abrade it: that is a separate scope under 29 CFR 1926.1101 for repair work, or 1910.1001 in general industry.

Scope

Covers the vent system serving residential and light-commercial gas appliances, from the appliance connection through the termination, as inspected during a service call. Does not cover vent design or resizing for a changeout, and does not cover the heat exchanger, owned by the heat exchanger inspection methods SOP. Does not cover the pressure switch fault that a blocked vent produces at the appliance, owned by the inducer and pressure switch diagnosis SOP. Does not cover oil equipment or masonry chimney repair itself, which goes to a chimney professional.

Procedure

  1. Establish the vent category from its two defining properties before you look at the pipe. Read the rating plate and the installation instructions for the appliance's category and its listed vent materials. Acceptance: the category written down with the two properties named, positive or non-positive vent static pressure and condensing or non-condensing, plus the vent material the appliance's own listing allows. Wrong looks like classifying from the presence of an inducer or a draft hood, which are correlates and not the definition. Stop rule: if the plate and the instructions disagree, stop and get the manufacturer's answer before approving anything. Hazard: none at this step, it is reading done with the appliance off.

  2. Confirm the installed material and configuration match that listing and the adopted code. Acceptance: the material found matches what the appliance listing names, joints are the listed connection method, and connector rise, slope, support spacing and length are inside what the National Fuel Gas Code, NFPA 54 / ANSI Z223.1, in the edition your authority having jurisdiction has adopted, and the manufacturer's instructions allow. Wrong looks like a plastic vent on a category the listing does not permit it on. Stop rule: a material mismatch means the appliance goes off and the vent is corrected before it runs again, whatever the draft measures. Hazard: connectors are hot on a recently fired appliance and single-wall connector edges cut, so let it cool and wear gloves.

  3. Survey the physical path from appliance to termination. Acceptance: a written condition note for connector joints and fasteners, horizontal runs and support, the chimney interior where visible, the termination clearances the instructions state, and any common-vented appliance sharing the path. Wrong looks like checking the appliance end and never going outside to the termination, which is where nests, screens, snow and ice sit. Stop rule: a blockage found means nothing else is tested until it is cleared. Hazard: terminations often mean ladder work, so roof or ladder access follows the shop's fall protection SOP rather than being improvised.

  4. Measure baseline draft with the house in its normal state. Probe in the vent connector at the manufacturer's stated location, appliance at steady firing. The convention here is negative gauge relative to the room, so a reading of minus 0.04 in w.c. is stronger draft than minus 0.01 in w.c. Acceptance: a negative reading meeting the manufacturer's stated draft at steady firing, recorded with the house condition it was taken in. Wrong looks like recording a magnitude with no sign, which loses the one thing the reading is for. Stop rule: no negative draft in a still house means the appliance goes off now. Hazard: you are beside a firing appliance with a probe in the vent, so the monitor stays in your breathing zone and the probe is handled by its handle.

  5. Repeat the measurement with the house set to worst case, and time the spillage. Close the doors between the mechanical space and the rest of the house, run every exhaust fan, the range hood and the clothes dryer, and fire the appliance cold. Acceptance: draft still negative at the connector under those conditions, and any spillage at the draft hood or relief opening stops within the time your program's combustion appliance safety protocol states, commonly 60 seconds from main burner ignition; use the figure your protocol names rather than a remembered one. Wrong looks like testing only in a still house, which passes a vent that fails whenever the family does laundry. Stop rule: draft that goes non-negative, or spillage persisting past that time, means the appliance goes off pending correction. Hazard: this test deliberately depressurizes an occupied space around a firing appliance, so occupants stay out of the mechanical space, the monitor is in your breathing zone, and the test is aborted the moment it alarms.

  6. Correct, restore, and re-run the worst-case test rather than the easy one. Acceptance: the named fault corrected, then baseline and worst-case draft both re-measured at the same probe location, spillage timed again, and ambient CO re-read with the appliance firing. Wrong looks like clearing a blockage and confirming with the still-house reading only, which is the test the fault already passed. Stop rule: a worst-case result still failing means the appliance stays off and the manager decides on temporary heat. Hazard: this is where fuel, energy and flame go back with the family in the house, so stand clear of the relief opening while it lights, keep the monitor on, and confirm any door switch you disturbed still kills its appliance.

  7. Write the file and say plainly what state you left the appliance in. Acceptance: category and defining properties, installed material and whether it matches the listing, both draft readings with signs and the house condition each was taken in, spillage time against the protocol figure, ambient and flue CO, the fault found, and the appliance state on departure. Wrong looks like "checked flue, OK," the note the next tech finds on the callback that mattered. Stop rule: an appliance left off is not closed out without the customer told in person and in writing. Hazard: none at this step, it is paperwork.

The record this produces

One venting record per visit, attached to the equipment:

  • Vent category, with vent static pressure and condensing status named
  • Installed material and configuration, and whether they match the appliance listing
  • Baseline draft in in w.c. with its sign, and the house condition it was taken in
  • Worst-case draft with its sign, the exhaust appliances that were running, and the spillage time against the protocol figure
  • Ambient CO with the appliance off and firing, and flue CO air-free with its limit
  • The fault found, what was corrected, and the appliance state on departure

The next tech compares worst-case draft between visits, which is how a house that got tighter after new windows becomes visible before it becomes an incident. The manager reads spillage times across the book, because a cluster in one subdivision is a builder detail, not a coincidence.

Worked pass: 1990s atmospheric furnace, common-vented with a water heater

Step 1: rating plate and instructions give a Category I appliance, which is non-positive vent static pressure and non-condensing, and the listed vent is Type B gas vent or a lined masonry chimney. Both defining properties written down.

Step 2: installed vent is a single-wall connector into a clay-lined masonry chimney, connector rise and support inside what the adopted edition of NFPA 54 and the instructions allow, and the water heater connects into the same chimney above the furnace connector. Material matches the listing.

Step 3: termination cap sound and clear. At the cleanout, mortar debris is visible at the base of the chimney. The mechanical room is a closed closet with a solid door and no combustion air opening.

Step 4: baseline draft at the connector reads minus 0.038 in w.c. at steady firing with the house in its normal state, which meets the manufacturer's stated draft.

Step 5 FAILS its acceptance and takes its stop rule. With the closet door closed, both bath fans, the range hood and the dryer running, draft at the same probe location reads minus 0.002 in w.c., and visible spillage at the draft hood is still present at 90 seconds from main burner ignition against the 60 second figure this shop's protocol names. Appliance off, customer told, manager notified.

Step 6: chimney base cleared by a chimney professional, and a combustion air opening sized per the adopted edition of NFPA 54 is cut and louvered into the closet door. Re-measured at the same probe location: baseline minus 0.041 in w.c., worst case minus 0.021 in w.c., both negative. Spillage under worst case stops at 22 seconds, inside the 60 second figure. Ambient CO reads 0 ppm with the appliance firing.

Step 7: flue CO recorded at 62 ppm air-free against the 400 ppm air-free limit the ANSI Z21 series sets for listed vented appliances. Appliance left running, file written, customer signed.

Self-audit, criterion by criterion: step 1 demanded the category with both defining properties, and the run names non-positive vent static pressure and non-condensing rather than pointing at the draft hood. Step 4 and step 5 both demanded a signed reading at the manufacturer's stated probe location, and the run prints minus 0.038, minus 0.002, minus 0.041 and minus 0.021 in w.c., all with signs, all at that same location, in one unit. Step 5's acceptance had two criteria and the run fills both, a draft value and a spillage time of 90 seconds against the protocol's 60; the failure is reported against the criterion the step stated rather than against the still-house reading that passed. Step 6 demanded the worst-case test be re-run rather than the baseline, and the run prints both.
