Truck Ramp and Lift Gate Operation Technique
Why this matters
A ramp and a lift gate both get an item from the ground to the truck bed, and they fail in opposite directions. A ramp fails when gravity takes the load away from the operator, downhill, faster than anyone can hold it. A lift gate fails when the load sits off-center on the platform and the mechanism tips or binds under uneven weight. Treating both as "walk it up carefully" misses that each needs its own control technique aimed at its own specific failure, which is why they get separate treatment here rather than one shared set of steps.
Setting up the ramp before anything rolls on it
A folding or slide-out loading ramp only works if it is actually fixed to the truck at both ends. Confirm the hooks or pins seat fully into the bed lip or tailgate edge, not resting against it, before any weight goes on. Walk the ramp once, empty, and watch for flex; a ramp that visibly bows under a person's weight alone is not rated for the item waiting behind it, and it does not get used until it is swapped for one that is. Read the capacity decal on the ramp itself: folding truck ramps commonly carry an incline rating around 15 degrees or less at full extension, and that figure is specific to the ramp's own length and construction, so confirm it on the unit in your hands rather than assuming last week's ramp matches this one. That decal check is not optional paperwork: 29 CFR 1910.176 requires mechanical handling equipment to be maintained in safe operating condition, and a ramp with a missing or illegible rating has no way to confirm it still meets that duty.
Surface traction changes the technique as much as the incline does. A wet ramp, a ramp with morning dew still on it, or one dusted with leaves or debris cuts a boot's grip and a wheel's grip at the same time, which is exactly when both matter most. Wipe the ramp surface dry before use whenever it is visibly wet, and treat a ramp with a worn or smooth traction surface (the raised diamond pattern flattened from years of wheel traffic) as needing that same caution even in dry conditions. A ramp that fails traction under a loaded dolly does not fail slowly; the wheels lose grip and the whole load starts to slide at once, which is the same runaway failure covered below, just triggered by the surface instead of by operator position.
When the load exceeds hand control: winch assist
A single-piece item heavy enough that two people bracing it cannot reliably control its descent, a full gun safe, a cast-iron tub, an industrial cabinet, needs a winch or come-along rather than hand control alone. Anchor the winch or come-along to a rated point on the truck's frame, never to a bumper or a tie-down loop not rated for the pull, and run the strap or cable in a straight line to the load with no twist. Take up slack before the item starts moving so there is never a moment of freefall before the line goes taut; a line that snaps tight against a moving load shock-loads both the line and its anchor point. Keep hands and body clear of the cable or strap's path the entire time it is under tension; a winch line under load that slips or snaps releases stored tension explosively along its own line of pull, and standing to the side of that line, not in front of or behind it, is what keeps that release from reaching a person.
Loading up: control from behind, never push into open space
Going up, the failure mode is the load rolling back down onto whoever is behind it. Position a second crew member at the base of the ramp before the dolly starts up, not as an afterthought once it is already moving; that person's job is to brace against a rollback, not to push from behind. The person on the handle walks up centered on the ramp's width, in a straight line, because a dolly angled across a ramp's slope is one uneven push away from tipping sideways off the edge. Never let the loaded dolly get ahead of your own footing; if you are climbing faster than you can hold the handle's angle, the control this technique depends on is already lost, and the right move is to stop and reset your footing before continuing, not to push through it.
Unloading down: the operator controls descent, not the load
Going down a ramp is where a runaway happens, and the control position is different from going up. The operator stays above and slightly behind the load's center of gravity, using their own braced weight against the handle as the brake, and lets the dolly descend one controlled step of travel at a time rather than in a continuous roll. Do not walk ahead of a loaded dolly on a downhill ramp facing away from it; a hand truck moving faster than a person can retreat is now chasing them, and there is nowhere on a ramp to step aside. The second crew member stays to the side at the base, not directly downhill in the load's path, ready to brace a runaway from the side rather than absorb it head-on. If the dolly does start to outrun the operator's braced steps, the response is to plant the trailing foot and lean weight back into the handle immediately, not to try to out-walk it to the bottom.
Operating a hydraulic lift gate
A lift gate moves the load vertically instead of along an incline, and its failure mode is an off-center load causing the platform to tip or bind against the truck frame as it travels.
- Bring the platform level with the ground before loading anything onto it. Loading onto a platform still mid-travel puts weight on a surface that is not yet stable, and the platform's own motion can push a partially loaded dolly off before it is set.
- Center the load over the platform's support arms, not toward the outer edge. A dolly loaded near the platform's edge shifts the load's moment arm outward, which is what causes an otherwise properly rated platform to tip under a load within its stated capacity.
- Operate the controls from the ground or the truck bed, never while standing on the platform mid-travel unless the gate is specifically designed for a rider and the control stays within reach the entire time. The control is a hold-to-run switch by design: release it and the platform stops, so if anything looks wrong mid-travel, release rather than trying to correct while it keeps moving.
- Keep hands and feet clear of the fold point where the platform meets the truck bed and the point where the platform meets the ground at full-down travel. Both are scissor-style pinch points that close as the mechanism cycles, and they close whether or not a hand happens to be there.
If the gate loses power or hydraulic pressure mid-travel with a load still on it, most gates have a manual release valve that lowers the platform under gravity alone rather than leaving it stuck aloft. Operating that release is its own hazard, not a convenience feature: without the pump's controlled flow rate, gravity is the only thing setting the descent speed, and a heavy load can drop faster than the same lift would normally travel. Clear everyone from under and beside the platform before opening the manual release, and open it in short increments, closing it again to check the rate, rather than opening it fully and letting the platform fall to the ground uncontrolled.
A worked case: the same appliance, two pieces of equipment
A 250 lb appliance dolly needs to go from a driveway onto a box truck. The crew has a folding ramp on one truck and a lift gate on the second truck at the same job.
On the ramp: climbing up, the base spotter braces as the handle operator walks the dolly up centered, no issue. Coming back down empty to reposition, the operator starts walking ahead of the dolly rather than staying above and behind it, a habit carried over from flat-ground pushing. The dolly's front wheels start to roll faster than the operator's backward steps on the incline. That is the runaway starting. The operator does not try to outrun it; they plant their trailing foot, lean their weight back into the handle, and arrest the roll within about a foot of travel, well short of reaching the spotter at the base. They reset above the dolly's center of gravity before continuing down at the controlled pace the technique calls for.
On the lift gate: the same dolly loads onto the platform, but the crew sets it near the outer edge to leave room for a second item. As the platform starts to rise, it visibly tilts toward that edge. The operator releases the hold-to-run control immediately; the platform stops mid-travel rather than continuing to tilt. The dolly is repositioned toward the platform's center, and the lift resumes level.
Verify and stow
A ramp left deployed or a lift gate left mid-travel is a hazard for the next person at the truck, not just an inconvenience. After the load is on, retract or fold the ramp and confirm the latch or pin engages before the truck moves; a ramp that looks stowed but is not pinned can drop under road vibration. Return the lift gate fully to its travel position and confirm it locks there, not just that it looks flush; a platform resting against the stop without the lock engaged can still shift under road motion the same way an unpinned ramp can.
