Fertilizer Math by N-P-K
Why this matters
A lawncare tech who can compute the actual nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium delivery from a fertilizer bag in 30 seconds at the customer's lawn produces accurate quotes and effective treatments. The customer who asks "how much nitrogen am I getting?" and gets a vague answer goes to the next contractor. The math is simple but rarely taught; most techs read the bag label without understanding what the three numbers actually mean for application. Knowing the N-P-K math also enables a contractor to discuss the soil test results meaningfully, recommend the right product family, and adjust applications to climate, season, and customer goals.
What N-P-K means
A fertilizer bag prints three numbers (e.g., 24-2-10 or 32-0-10). These represent:
- N: percentage by weight of nitrogen
- P: percentage by weight of phosphate (P2O5)
- K: percentage by weight of potash (K2O)
For a 40 lb bag of 24-2-10:
- N: 24 percent of 40 lb = 9.6 lb of nitrogen
- P: 2 percent of 40 lb = 0.8 lb of phosphate
- K: 10 percent of 40 lb = 4 lb of potash
The remaining 25.6 lb is the carrier (often a granular substance like sand or vermiculite).
Pounds per 1,000 sq ft
Most lawn fertilizer guidance is in "pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per application". Typical:
- Light feeding: 0.5 lb N/1000 sq ft per application
- Standard feeding: 1.0 lb N/1000 sq ft per application
- Heavy feeding: 1.5 lb N/1000 sq ft per application (rarely recommended)
To calculate how much fertilizer to apply per 1,000 sq ft:
Fertilizer pounds per 1,000 sq ft = (target N pounds per 1,000 sq ft) / (fertilizer N percentage)
For 1 lb N/1000 sq ft using a 24-2-10:
Fertilizer = 1.0 / 0.24 = 4.17 lb of fertilizer per 1,000 sq ft
A 40 lb bag of 24-2-10 covers 40 / 4.17 = 9,600 sq ft at this rate.
Calculation examples
Example 1: 32-0-10 fertilizer at standard rate
- Target: 1.0 lb N per 1,000 sq ft
- Fertilizer per 1,000 sq ft: 1.0 / 0.32 = 3.13 lb
- 40 lb bag covers: 40 / 3.13 = 12,800 sq ft
Example 2: 13-13-13 starter fertilizer
- Target: 1.0 lb N per 1,000 sq ft
- Fertilizer per 1,000 sq ft: 1.0 / 0.13 = 7.69 lb
- 40 lb bag covers: 40 / 7.69 = 5,200 sq ft
Higher-N fertilizers cover more area per bag for the same N delivery. Starter fertilizers (more P and K) cover less area at the same N rate.
Example 3: Soil test shows P needed
Customer's soil test:
- N: low
- P: low
- K: adequate
Application: 13-13-13 starter at 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft
At this rate: 1 lb N delivered also delivers 1 lb P2O5 and 1 lb K2O per 1,000 sq ft.
If only N is needed (typical for lawns with adequate P and K):
Use 32-0-10 or 24-0-10 (no phosphorus, modest K). Apply at 1 lb N rate.
Example 4: Customer has 5,000 sq ft lawn
Total nitrogen target for the season:
- 4 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per year (typical cool-season lawn)
- 5,000 sq ft x 4 lb / 1,000 = 20 lb N total
Using 32-0-10:
- 20 lb N / 0.32 = 62.5 lb of fertilizer total for the season
- Divided into 4 applications: 15.6 lb per application
- One 40 lb bag covers approximately 2.5 applications
The customer's annual fertilizer need: roughly 60 to 70 lb of 32-0-10 spread across 4 to 6 applications.
Slow-release vs fast-release nitrogen
Fertilizers vary in how quickly N becomes plant-available:

Modern premium lawn fertilizers blend multiple N sources to provide quick green-up plus sustained release. Bag labels show the breakdown (e.g., "30 percent slow-release nitrogen").
Application rates by season
Cool-season turf typical schedule:

Phosphorus considerations
Many states restrict phosphorus application due to runoff concerns affecting lakes and rivers:
- Florida, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maine, Maryland, New York, New Jersey: phosphorus-free or restricted fertilizers required
- Restriction typically: no P unless soil test confirms deficiency
- Bag labeling: "0" P (zero phosphate) fertilizers widely available
For starter fertilizer at new lawn installation, P is permitted because it supports establishment. Verify against local regulations.
Potassium considerations
Potassium (K) is important for:
- Cold tolerance
- Drought tolerance
- Disease resistance
In standard fertilizer programs, K is supplied along with N. Fall winterizer fertilizers often emphasize K (1:0:2 or 1:1:2 ratio) to support cold tolerance.
Soil test interpretation
A standard soil test reports:
- N: typically not measured directly; estimated from organic matter
- P: ppm; categorized as low / medium / high / very high
- K: ppm; same categorization
- pH: target 6.0 to 7.0 for most turf
- Organic matter: percentage
- CEC (cation exchange capacity): indicates soil's nutrient-holding ability
A soil test report typically recommends fertilizer rates and applications. Follow the recommendation; don't over- or under-apply.

Calibrate the spreader to deliver the target rate at the operator's walking speed.
Application best practices
Calibrate before the season, and recalibrate when the product changes. Spreader settings printed on a bag are a starting point, not a number. Weigh out a known quantity, run a measured strip at normal walking speed, and weigh what is left. Prill size, density, and humidity all shift the flow rate, so a setting that was right for one product is wrong for another with the same analysis.
Half rate, two passes, perpendicular. Splitting the target rate across two passes at right angles cancels the edge falloff of a rotary pattern. Single-pass application is where stripes come from, and stripes show up two weeks later as green bands the customer photographs and sends you.
Close the hopper on turns and on hardscape. Fertilizer on a driveway is not just waste, it is the material that washes into the storm drain and puts phosphorus in the customer's neighborhood pond. Blow or sweep any granular that lands on hard surface back onto the turf before you leave, every time.
Use a drop spreader or an edge guard near beds, walks, and water. Many states set a setback from surface water. Where a buffer applies, respect it and note it on the ticket.
Do not apply to dormant, drought-stressed, or frozen ground. Nitrogen on a plant that is not growing feeds weeds and leaches. On frozen or saturated soil it runs off. Wait for conditions rather than burning the visit.
Water in appropriately. Most granular products want light irrigation shortly after application to move the nutrient off the leaf and into the soil, which also reduces burn risk. Combination products carrying a post-emergent herbicide are the exception; those need leaf contact and dwell time. Read which one you are holding before you tell the customer to run the sprinklers.
Match rate to release type. A quick-release source at over one pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet in one shot is a burn and a surge of soft growth. Coated and slow-release sources carry higher single-application rates safely. The analysis on the front of the bag does not tell you this; the nitrogen source breakdown on the back does.
Record every application. Date, product, analysis, rate, total area, and weather. That log answers the customer's questions, supports the next soil test decision, and is the record a state regulator asks for.
