Grub and Insect Treatment Visit

Purpose

Put an insecticide on a lawn only where a counted population justifies it, at the rate the label states, and leave a record that holds up to a state inspection and a neighbor complaint. Without a standing procedure the same call goes two ways and both lose: a blanket application across a property that had grubs in one zone, or a "we treated for bugs" ticket with no counts, rate or times - the ticket you cannot defend in October when the turf still lifts like carpet, or next spring when a beekeeper asks what you sprayed.

Scope

Covers scouting, the treat/do-not-treat decision, measuring, application and closeout for turf insects on residential and light commercial lawns: annual white grubs (masked chafer, Japanese beetle and European chafer larvae), billbugs, chinch bugs and sod webworm, applied on foot from a spreader, backpack sprayer or skid unit by an applicator holding the state credential for that category.

Does not cover ornamental or tree and shrub applications, which sit on a different label site and usually a different license category; soil injection; mole and vole work, a vertebrate program whatever the customer believes; or fire ant mounds where your state regulates them separately. Turf already killed by grubs is a seeding job.

Procedure

  1. Confirm license, label and product before the truck leaves. Read the label of the exact product going on the truck, not last season's, and confirm the target insect and the turf are both listed sites and your license covers the category. Acceptance: the label names your pest, the rate table is legible, the SDS is on the truck. Wrong looks like a weathered label or a carried-over formulation. Stop rule: no legible label, no application. Hazard: if the label specifies a respirator, nobody wears one until they are in a written respiratory protection program with medical evaluation and fit testing under 29 CFR 1910.134, and because the label's PPE is a condition of use, a product whose label specifies a respirator is not applied by a crew without that program: substitute a product whose label PPE you can meet, or the visit does not happen; the SDS must be accessible under 29 CFR 1910.1200.

  2. Walk the property and draw the zones before anything comes off the truck. Sketch the turf into zones by irrigation, sun and damage pattern, marking every pond, well head, downspout outfall, vegetable bed, pet run and blooming area. Acceptance: a sketch carrying each zone's square footage and every one of those features. Wrong looks like a single number for "the lawn" on a property with an irrigated back and a baked front. Stop rule: where grade or overgrowth hides a boundary, take the closer line and shrink the zone. Hazard: ground-nesting yellowjackets nest in dry turf and mulch edges and a spreader wheel over the entrance triggers a mass sting response, so flag any hole with insects moving in and out, keep everyone 10 feet clear that day, and confirm whether anyone on the crew carries an epinephrine auto-injector.

  3. Cut sample flaps and count, one set per zone. With a sod knife cut three sides of a one-foot square about 3 inches deep, fold the flap back, count every grub in the flap and the soil beneath it, then fold the sod back and step it down. Take at least three samples per zone, more where it is large or the damage patchy. Acceptance: three counted flaps per zone minimum, each recorded as its own number, every flap closed and firmed. Wrong looks like one sample from the worst spot used for the whole property. Stop rule: fewer than three usable flaps means no decision for that zone - come back rather than guess. Hazard: cut with the blade travelling away from your leading hand, and probe for shallow irrigation lateral, low-voltage lighting and pet-fence wire before the first cut.

  4. Apply the density gate per zone and write the decision down before you mix anything. For annual white grubs the working gate is a zone mean at or above 10 per square foot on healthy irrigated turf, dropping to about 5 where the zone is unirrigated or drought-stressed, because stressed turf cannot outgrow root feeding it would otherwise tolerate. Acceptance: each zone carries its own mean, its own gate and a written treat or do-not-treat call. Wrong looks like averaging the whole property, letting a hot zone and a clean zone cancel out. Stop rule: a zone under its gate is not treated, and the ticket says so with the number. Hazard: none added here, which is why it gets skipped.

  5. Run the pre-application site check in the conditions you actually have. Standing on the zone about to be treated, check for blooming plants including clover and dandelion in the turf itself, wind carrying toward water or a neighbor's garden, and people or pets in or next to the area. Acceptance: no blooming plants where a pollinator-restricted label applies, wind inside the label's stated limits, area clear of people and pets. Wrong looks like white clover in flower across a lawn you are about to treat with a label that restricts application to blooming plants when bees are foraging. Stop rule: any label condition unmet stops the application - leave without treating rather than treat around it. Hazard and legal gate in one clause: applying in a manner inconsistent with the labeling is unlawful under FIFRA at 7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G), so the label's pollinator, wind and buffer statements are instructions, not guidance.

  6. Calibrate, then weigh out a charge sized to the treated area only. Confirm the spreader setting against the label's table for that spreader, then verify it by running a weighed charge over a measured 1,000 square feet and reweighing what is left. Acceptance: measured output within about 10 percent of the label rate, and the weighed charge equal to treated square footage divided by 1,000 times the label rate. Wrong looks like a setting carried over from the last product. Stop rule: output outside 10 percent means recalibrate before you load; never split the difference. Hazard: pouring granules raises dust, so stand upwind and pour downwind of yourself at hopper height with the label's eye and respiratory protection on, over turf or a containment tray, never over a storm inlet.

  7. Apply in the pattern the zone requires and hold the boundaries you drew. Walk a consistent pass at the calibrated speed with the deflector engaged along every hard edge and marked feature, keeping product off driveways, walks and the street. Acceptance: full coverage of the zone, no granules on hard surfaces after the pass, no product inside the buffer marked around water. Wrong looks like a green stripe of granules along the curb, a direct path to the storm system. Stop rule: product on a hard surface gets swept back onto the turf before you move on; product that reaches a drain stops the job and starts the SDS spill procedure. Hazard: granules deflect off hard edges into eyes, so safety glasses stay on for the whole pass, and over about 85 F rotate the applicator and drink before thirst - the label's long sleeves and boots are why heat illness lands in August.

  8. Water in to the labeled depth, or hand the watering off in writing. Soil-active turf insecticides do nothing until they reach the root zone, so irrigate to the depth the label states and prove it with a straight-sided can in the zone rather than by watching the clock. Acceptance: the can reads the label's depth, or the customer holds a written instruction naming the depth and the deadline. Wrong looks like "the customer said they would water", which is how a correctly rated application gets re-treated free. Stop rule: no irrigation and no customer commitment means the application waits; do not apply product you cannot activate. Hazard: on a zone with a well head or an uncapped valve box, keep the hose bib connection above the box and use a hose-bib vacuum breaker so treated water cannot be drawn back toward potable plumbing.

  9. Post the area, brief the customer and close the record before you leave. Set posting signs at each normal entry, tell the customer what went down, where, why the untreated zone was left alone, and when people and pets may return per the label's re-entry statement, then close the record. Acceptance: signs visible at every entry, customer briefed in person or by sent message, every record field filled. Wrong looks like signs at the front walk only when the gate is the entry everyone uses. Stop rule: no signs on the truck means no application that day. Hazard: children and pets are the re-entry exposure that matters, so name the return time as a clock time, not a duration.

The record this produces

The application record carries the date, the start and stop times, the applicator's name and license number, the product name and EPA registration number, the rate applied, the treated square footage by zone, the target pest, and the weather at application including wind speed and direction and air temperature. Most state lead agencies require a written record of each application and set a retention period, commonly two years, though the fields and the period are your state's, so confirm both. It files with the job ticket, read by a state inspector, your carrier after a drift complaint, and you next season.

The scouting record carries each zone's flap counts, the zone mean, the gate applied and the resulting call, as a note on the customer record. Next year's applicator reads it to tell a chronic site from a one-off.

One pass, with a step that failed

Late August, cool-season lawn, 8,400 square feet: an unirrigated south-facing front of 3,600 showing two patches that lift like carpet, and a shaded irrigated back of 4,800.

Step 3 cut four flaps in the front and three in the back. Front counts: 12, 14, 9, 3, so 38 over 4 flaps, a mean of 9.5 grubs per square foot. Back counts: 1, 0, 2, so 3 over 3 flaps, a mean of 1.0. Step 4 applied the gate zone by zone: the front is unirrigated and stressed, so its gate is 5 and 9.5 is over it, treat; the back is irrigated and dense, so its gate is 10 and 1.0 is under it, do not treat. Treated area is 3,600 square feet, not 8,400, and the ticket records the back's 1.0 mean as the reason it was skipped.

Step 5 failed. White clover was in flower across roughly a third of the front lawn with bees working it at mid-morning, and the label restricts application to blooming plants where bees are foraging. Stop rule taken: no application. The crew mowed the front at standard height to remove the bloom, told the customer why, and rebooked for the next morning - about an hour of return time against a treatment window running several weeks. Applying over the bloom would have cost a bee kill, a state complaint and a documented label violation.

Next morning the front carried no open bloom and step 5 passed. Label rate on that bag is 2.9 pounds per 1,000 square feet, so 3,600 / 1,000 = 3.6 and 3.6 x 2.9 = 10.44 pounds weighed out, called 10.5 on the scale. The calibration check delivered 3.1 pounds against a target of 2.9, 6.9 percent high and inside the 10 percent acceptance, so the setting stood.
