Herbicide Application and Drift Control
Purpose
Put a labeled rate of herbicide on the turf that was sold and nowhere else. Drift is the one lawn-care error that damages property the shop was never hired to touch, and somebody else finds it: a neighbour's tomatoes cupping ten days later, a customer's redbud with strapped leaves. By then the wind data for that morning is public record and the shop's application record is the only evidence of what was done.
Drift is also decided before the tank is mixed. Droplet size, boom height and speed are set at the truck, and wind is a gate you pass or fail. Nothing done at the wand fixes a fine-droplet setup on a gusty morning.
Scope
Covers selective and non-selective herbicide applied to turf and hard-surface cracks by broadcast boom, ride-on sprayer, or handheld wand: label reading, mix arithmetic, nozzle selection and catch test, the wind and sensitive-site gate, application pattern, tank rinse, and the record.
Does not cover the posting sign or the entry restriction clock, which is the LawnCare pesticide posting and re-entry notification SOP and runs on this same visit. Does not cover a combination product's fertilizer half, or weeds in beds, where the tolerant-species problem is different; that is the bed edging and weed control SOP.

The handoff that fails is the untreated area. A crew that skips a strip near a vegetable garden and says nothing has created a callback where the shop looks like it missed, rather than a documented decision the office can explain in one sentence.
Procedure
Step 1 - Read the label on this container, then check the licence
Read the label on the container going on the truck. Acceptance: maximum single-application rate per 1,000 sq ft on the work order, the wind restriction transcribed word for word, the EPA registration number recorded, and the applicator's state licence category confirmed for turf herbicide. Wrong looks like working from last season's rate memory on a container whose formulation changed from an ester to an amine, which changes the volatility behaviour entirely. If the label disagrees with the work order the label governs and the office gets a call: under FIFRA it is unlawful to use a registered pesticide in a manner inconsistent with its labeling (7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G)), so a label restriction is not shop preference. Keep the safety data sheet with the container, since 29 CFR 1910.1200 requires it be accessible to the employees using the product.
Step 2 - Catch-test every nozzle before anything is mixed
Fill with clean water, bring the system to working pressure, and catch each nozzle into a graduated jug for a timed 60 seconds. Acceptance: each nozzle within 10 percent of the average of all nozzles on the boom, and the average within 10 percent of the tip's rated flow at the pressure on the gauge. Wrong looks like one tip running visibly heavier, which is a worn orifice, and a worn tip lays a stripe of over-application that shows as a bleached band two weeks later. Any nozzle more than 10 percent above the average gets replaced, not cleaned, and the test re-runs; a tip that has worn open does not wear back. Relieve pressure through the boom valve with the pump off before breaking a tip loose, because a pressurized line releases a jet at eye height.
Step 3 - Pick the droplet spectrum, not just the nozzle
Choose a tip and pressure that put you in a Coarse or Very Coarse spray classification for broadcast turf work. Acceptance: nozzle chart consulted for that exact tip, working pressure inside the tip's stated band, classification named on the record. Wrong looks like dropping pressure on an air-induction tip to coarsen the spray, which is backwards: that tip needs pressure at the upper end of its range to draw air and form the large air-filled droplets it exists to produce, while a conventional flat fan does coarsen as pressure falls. The driftable fraction is generally taken as droplets under about 150 microns, and those are what a 6 mph crosswind carries past the property line. The categories come from ASABE S572.1, which reaches you through the label rather than binding you on its own.
Step 4 - Mix by arithmetic, in the order the label gives
Compute finished spray volume from treatable area and carrier rate, then product volume, then mix. Acceptance: gallons of finished spray and fluid ounces of product written down before the jug is opened, tank half filled with water before product goes in, agitation running, container triple-rinsed with rinsate into the tank. Wrong looks like pouring product into a dry tank, which leaves concentrate on the sump and pulls a slug of near-neat material through the first nozzle to open. Mixing is the highest-concentration moment of the day: chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection per the label go on before the closure is broken, the operator stands upwind of the fill port outdoors, and where the label calls for respiratory protection it is issued under a written program meeting 29 CFR 1910.134, not as a shop dust mask.
Step 5 - Run the wind and sensitive-site gate at the property, not at the shop
Measure wind at the site with a handheld meter held at about boom height, then walk the downwind boundary. Acceptance: measured wind inside the label's stated range, no temperature inversion indicated, and every sensitive feature inside the downwind boundary written on the record with a measured buffer. Wrong looks like dead calm being read as ideal: under about 3 mph on a clear morning with dew and no ground turbulence, an inversion can hold fine droplets suspended and carry them a long way when the layer breaks, which is why many labels set a lower wind limit as well as an upper one. Sensitive features are vegetable gardens, grape vines, fruit trees, a koi pond, an open surface drain, and any young tree with thin bark. If the gate fails on wind, do not apply and log the measured value and time; if it fails on a sensitive feature, leave the buffer untreated, flag it, and record its area.
Step 6 - Apply at the calibrated speed with the boom at the charted height
Run parallel passes at the calibrated speed, with the boom at the height the tip chart requires for double overlap at your nozzle spacing, and shut the outer section off on any pass adjacent to a sensitive boundary. Acceptance: consistent ground speed, no visible fog above the boom, wet pattern meeting edge to edge with no dry seam. Wrong looks like speeding up on the back stretch, which thins the rate on the part of the lawn nobody inspects, or raising the boom to clear a swale, which widens the drift cone with the height increase. If the pattern shows a dry seam, stop and check for a plugged tip rather than making a correction pass at an unknown rate. Never clear a tip with the pump running.
Step 7 - Rinse the tank and account for what is left
Rinse tank, boom and lines with clean water before the unit leaves, and spray the rinsate onto a site the label permits. Acceptance: rinse volume recorded, rinsate applied to a labeled site, leftover finished spray accounted for on the record. Wrong looks like a half tank of growth-regulator herbicide carried to tomorrow's ornamental job, where the residue in the line is enough to injure a bed the product is not labeled for. If the tank has held a growth regulator and the next job is near sensitive plants, use a dedicated tank or a tank cleaner per the label, not a water rinse. Never put rinsate into a storm inlet, a ditch, or a driveway that drains to one.
Step 8 - Write the record before you leave the property
Complete the record on site. Acceptance: every field below filled, including measured wind and untreated buffer areas, signed by the licensed applicator. Wrong looks like a record built at the shop that evening, where the wind field becomes whatever the forecast said. If a value is genuinely unknown, write unknown: a fabricated wind speed is the field an investigator checks against the nearest airport observation, and a mismatch discredits the whole record.
The record this produces
One application record per property per visit: date, start and finish clock times, applicator name and licence number, product trade name and EPA registration number, formulation type, treatable area in square feet, carrier rate in gallons per 1,000 sq ft, product rate per 1,000 sq ft, total finished spray applied, tip number and working pressure, droplet classification, measured wind speed and direction, air temperature, and every untreated buffer with its size and reason.
Tip number, pressure and the catch-test figure land on the equipment card, which is what shows a boom drifting out of calibration across a season rather than on one bad morning. Wind and buffers land on the property card, so the next applicator arrives knowing the west boundary has a vegetable garden, and the office reconciles product consumed against area treated the way the fertilizer SOP describes. What the record cannot do is settle liability for off-target injury, which is a question for the owner and the shop's insurer; its job is to establish what was applied, at what rate, in what conditions.
One pass through this procedure
Property: 14,000 sq ft of measured treatable turf, broadleaf herbicide, ride-on boom with three nozzles at 20 in spacing, so a 60 in swath, 5.0 ft wide. Plan is a 1.0 gallon per 1,000 sq ft carrier rate at an illustrative label rate of 1.5 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft: 14.0 gallons of finished spray carrying 21.0 fl oz of product.
Step 2 fails. The three nozzles catch 74, 76 and 88 fl oz in 60 seconds. Average is 79.3 fl oz and the 88 sits 10.9 percent above it, outside the 10 percent gate. The stop rule runs: nothing is mixed, the tip is replaced rather than cleaned, and the test re-runs. Second run catches 75, 76 and 77 fl oz, average 76.0, widest nozzle 1.3 percent off. That figure is accepted and written down.
Calibration now closes against the plan. 76 fl oz per minute is 0.594 gpm per nozzle, 1.78 gpm across three. At 4.0 mph the machine covers 352 ft per minute, and at a 5.0 ft swath that is 1,760 sq ft per minute. Applied volume is 1.78 divided by 1.76, so 1.01 gallons per 1,000 sq ft against a 1.0 target, 1.2 percent over and inside the 5 percent band the shop accepts. The full lawn takes 7.95 minutes of spraying and 14.2 gallons.
Step 5 passes on wind at 5 mph from the west and fails on a sensitive site: the downwind walk finds a vegetable garden 20 ft past the west property line. A strip 5 ft wide by 90 ft along that boundary, 450 sq ft, is left untreated, flagged and recorded. Treated area drops to 13,550 sq ft, so the mix is cut to 13.6 gallons carrying 20.3 fl oz of product.
Steps 6 through 8 pass. The pattern meets with no seam, the tank rinses to a labeled turf site, and the record carries the measured 5 mph, the 450 sq ft untreated buffer with its reason, and the corrected catch-test figure. The office reads the buffer note next morning and calls the customer first.
