Weed Escape and Respray Visit
Purpose
A respray is a diagnosis, not a second try. When weeds survive an application, the pattern of what survived tells you which of five things went wrong, and only one of them is fixed by putting the same product down again. Guess, and the shop pays for the trip twice, burns a slot against the label's seasonal maximum, and on a resistance escape actively selects for the survivors.
This procedure guarantees that the first application's record is read before the truck loads, that a cause is named on evidence, that the re-treatment is checked against the label's own limits, and that the correction addresses the cause rather than repeating the application.
Scope
Covers the callback visit on a residential or light commercial lawn where weeds survived a prior herbicide application: reading the prior record, mapping the escape pattern, identifying the survivor and its growth stage, assigning a cause, clearing the label's re-treatment gate, and applying the correction.
Does not cover mixing, nozzle and droplet selection, calibration or the wind and sensitive-site gate, which are the LawnCare herbicide application and drift control SOP and govern any spray this visit produces. Does not cover bed weeds and shielded spot treatment near ornamentals, which is the bed edging and weed control visit, or posting and re-entry, which is the pesticide posting and re-entry notification SOP.

The handoff that fails is the mowing date. A lawn mowed two days after a systemic application removes the treated leaf before the product has moved, and that reads as product failure forever unless somebody writes the date down.
Procedure
Step 1 - Read the prior record before the truck loads
Pull the application that failed and read seven fields: product, site-of-action group, rate applied, date, target species, weather at application, and any mowing or rainfall since. Acceptance: all seven present and legible. Wrong looks like a respray dispatched off a phone complaint, which makes the same mistake twice at full cost. Stop rule: a record missing any of the seven is not a respray - it is treated as a first application, with its own record, and the office is told which field was missing. Hazard: none added, this is a read at a desk.
Step 2 - Map the escape pattern before deciding anything
Walk the treated area and sketch where survivors are, then name the pattern. Acceptance: a sketch showing survivor locations, an estimate of what share of the treated area carries them, and one pattern named - stripes or skips, uniform scatter, edges and obstacles only, or one species surviving where others died. Wrong looks like "the weeds came back", which fits all four and decides nothing. Stop rule: two distinct patterns on one property are two causes and get two entries, never one averaged call. Hazard: survivors sit where people do not walk, so watch for ground-nesting yellowjackets at bed edges and in dry turf, keep everyone 10 ft clear of any hole with insects moving in and out, and confirm whether anyone on the crew carries an epinephrine auto-injector.
Step 3 - Identify the survivor and its growth stage
Name the species, not the category, and record where it is in its life cycle. Acceptance: species named, plus stage recorded as seedling, actively growing and pre-bloom, flowering, or mature perennial with rhizome or tuber. Wrong looks like "broadleaf", which cannot be checked against a label spectrum or a rate table. Stop rule: a survivor you cannot name gets photographed and confirmed by the office before any product is chosen, since rate and season both change with species. Hazard: bare-hand sampling finds poison ivy, whose oil transfers to gloves, tools and clothing and raises dermatitis days later, so wear gloves, wash exposed skin promptly with soap and water, and bag the gloves rather than returning them to the truck bin.
Step 4 - Compare what the label required against what actually happened
Set the label beside the record and check four things with numbers: the label's rate for that species at that stage against the rate applied, water volume and any required adjuvant, the label's rainfast interval against rainfall since, and its temperature statement against conditions on the day. Acceptance: four written comparisons, each with both values. Wrong looks like "we applied it correctly", with nothing to compare. Stop rule: a comparison you cannot make because the record lacks the value stops the cause call and returns the visit to step 1. Hazard: none added; the container stays closed until step 7.
Step 5 - Assign one cause from five
Choose between coverage miss, under-rate for that species, wrong stage or spectrum, environment (rain inside the rainfast interval, temperature outside the label's range, or a drought-stressed weed that was not actively growing), and resistance. Acceptance: one cause written with the step 2 pattern and the step 4 comparison supporting it. Wrong looks like defaulting to resistance, the rarest of the five and the most expensive conclusion. Stop rule: resistance is named only when the species is on the label, the label rate went on at the right stage with good coverage, other species in the same pass died, and the same site-of-action group has run here a third season - and once named, that group is not applied again on this property, the group changes or the survivors are removed mechanically. Hazard: none added.
Step 6 - Clear the label's re-treatment gate before mixing
Read the container's own limits: minimum interval between applications, maximum single-application rate for that site, and maximum applications or total rate per site per year. Acceptance: each limit written as read off the label, the season's applications on this site totalled beside it, and a yes or no. Wrong looks like counting only the applications this crew made. Stop rule: a site at its seasonal maximum gets no further product this year - hand removal, a spot treatment only where the label permits it inside the cap, or a program change next season, and the customer is told which. Hazard: exceeding a labeled maximum is use inconsistent with the labeling and unlawful under FIFRA at 7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G), so the arithmetic happens before mixing.
Step 7 - Apply the correction that fixes the named cause
Fix the cause, then spray: re-check nozzles and speed for a coverage miss, use the species rate for an under-rate, change the site-of-action group for resistance, or reschedule for a stage or season problem. Acceptance: the correction named on the ticket, and the applied rate matching the label's rate for that species at that stage. Wrong looks like a repeat of the original application with more pressure. Stop rule: a cause of stage or season means no product goes down today, and the visit closes as a scheduled return. Hazard: herbicide reaches a technician by skin contact, eye splash, inhaled mist and hand-to-mouth transfer, so the label's chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection go on before the container opens, the mix is poured downwind of the body over turf and never over a storm inlet, and nothing is eaten or drunk until hands are washed; where the label names a respirator nobody wears one unless they are in a written program with medical evaluation and fit testing under 29 CFR 1910.134, so a crew without that program substitutes a different product; if concentrate contacts skin or eyes, flush per the SDS first-aid statement and send the SDS with the person, and if any reaches a drain the job stops and the SDS spill procedure runs.
Step 8 - Post, brief and set the check date
Post at every normal entry, tell the customer what was found and done, and set a date to look again. Acceptance: signs at each entry including the gate, a re-entry time given as a clock time rather than a duration, the cause and correction on the record, and a check date at the label's stated interval for symptom expression. Wrong looks like promising results by the weekend on a systemic that shows nothing for a week or more. Stop rule: no posting signs on the truck means no application that day. Hazard: children and pets are the re-entry exposure that matters, so the return time goes as a clock time to whoever is home.
The record this produces
Per property and per escape: the prior application's seven fields, the escape sketch with the share of area affected, the pattern name, the survivor species and stage, the four label comparisons with both values each, the named cause, the label's three re-treatment limits as read plus the season total, the correction applied with its site-of-action group, and the check date.
The applicator reads the site-of-action history before the next visit, because rotation is the only field control on resistance. The office reads causes across the customer base: a run of coverage misses is a calibration or training problem on one crew, a run of stage causes is a scheduling problem in the program, and a run of resistance calls on one species in one neighborhood is a shift the whole program has to answer.
One pass through this procedure
Property: 8,000 sq ft of cool-season turf. Broadcast broadleaf application 24 days ago; customer reports the lawn is still weedy.
Step 1 passes with all seven fields. Step 2 maps survivors across roughly 12 percent of the treated area, scattered evenly rather than in stripes, and every survivor is the same species while dandelion and white clover in the same pass are dead. Pattern named: one species surviving where others died. Step 3 identifies it as ground ivy, mature and running, past bloom.
Step 4 makes the four comparisons. The label lists ground ivy but gives it a higher rate than the dandelion rate on the same label, and the record shows the dandelion rate was applied. Water volume and adjuvant matched, no rain fell inside the rainfast interval, and air temperature was inside the label's stated range.
Step 5 names under-rate for that species, on two supports: the pattern is species-specific rather than positional, and the applied rate was the label's lower listed rate. Resistance is explicitly not named, because the label rate for this species was never applied, which is the first condition the stop rule requires.
Step 6 fails. The label as read caps this site at two broadcast applications per year, and the property record shows broadcast applications on April 12 and June 20. A third broadcast is not permitted, so the stop rule runs. The label separately permits spot treatment of individual weeds inside that cap, so the correction becomes spot treatment of the mapped survivors at the label's ground ivy rate rather than a broadcast pass, and the customer is told plainly why the whole lawn is not being sprayed again.
Step 7 spot-treats the mapped areas at the correct species rate. Step 8 posts both entries, gives the homeowner a re-entry clock time, and sets the check at the label's stated interval for symptom expression. The record notes that ground ivy control is more reliable in fall, so the program moves this property's ground ivy treatment there next season rather than repeating a spring pass that has now cost two trips.
