Impressioning Technique for Lost Keys
Why this matters
Impressioning is the technique of creating a working key from the lock itself, without picking or destroying the lock. When a customer has lost their key and the lock is intact, impressioning creates a new key from the cylinder. This is a fundamental locksmithing skill, particularly useful for older locks where the cylinder isn't easily replaced or for customers who want their original lock retained.
When impressioning is the right approach

For standard pin tumbler locks (most residential), impressioning is the elegant solution.
How impressioning works
The technique exploits how the lock works:
- Insert a blank key into the lock
- Apply rotational pressure (as if turning the key)
- Pins press against the key blank
- Marks appear on the key (impressions from the pins)
- File the marks
- Repeat: insert, pressure, file
- After multiple cycles, the key cuts match the lock's pins
- The lock opens
This is a precise, iterative technique requiring practice + patience.

The procedure
Step 1: Identify the lock
- Lock manufacturer (Schlage, Kwikset, Sargent, etc.)
- Lock type (pin tumbler, wafer, dimple, etc.)
- Keyway profile (which blank fits)
- Approximate number of pins (5 or 6 typical residential)
Step 2: Select the blank
- Must fit the keyway
- Bow (the head) should match the manufacturer style
- Use the highest-quality blank for the lock (cheap blanks don't take impressions well)
- Some impressioning blanks have specific features (rolled bow for grip)
Step 3: Insert and apply pressure
- Insert the blank fully
- Apply rotational pressure (gentle but firm)
- Move the key in/out slightly while maintaining pressure
- This creates impressions where the pins contact the blank
Step 4: Withdraw and inspect
- Remove the blank carefully
- Use magnification to inspect the cuts
- Look for tiny dimples or marks on the blade
- Each mark corresponds to a pin location
Step 5: File the marks
- File each impression slightly deeper
- File evenly along the line of cuts
- Don't over-file; you can't add material back
- File only at the marks, not between them
Step 6: Test and repeat
- Reinsert the blank
- Try to turn (gentle)
- The key shouldn't turn yet (still incomplete)
- Apply pressure for new marks
- File again
- Repeat for many cycles (often 20-60 iterations)
The pattern gradually emerges as impressions deepen.
Step 7: Final fit
When the key approaches the correct depth at all positions:
- Apply pressure carefully
- The lock should turn
- Slight resistance is okay; significant resistance means more filing needed
- Test smoothly turning the lock
Step 8: Polish the key
After the key works:
- Smooth the cuts with finer file
- Remove burrs
- Test repeatedly
- The customer's working key is ready
What makes impressioning easier or harder
Easier:
- Standard pin tumbler locks (5 pin Schlage / Kwikset)
- New or recently-keyed locks (consistent pin depths)
- Quality lock manufacturers (predictable specifications)
- Good magnification
- Patience
Harder:
- High-security locks (sidebar mechanisms, etc.)
- Worn locks (inconsistent feedback)
- Specialty key profiles
- Multiple identical pins (no clear positional information)
- Time pressure
Time required
Impressioning is slow:
- Standard residential pin tumbler: 30-90 minutes
- More complex locks: 1-3+ hours
- Specialty locks: rarely worthwhile
Picking the lock is often faster than impressioning. Impressioning is for creating the key (not just opening the lock).
When picking + cylinder code is faster
For modern residential:
- Pick the lock (5-15 minutes for standard pin tumbler)
- Extract the cylinder
- Read the pin depths
- Cut a new key from the code
This is faster than impressioning for most lock types. Impressioning is reserved for specific situations.
Specialty: high-security impressioning
For Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, ASSA, etc.:
- Standard impressioning typically doesn't work
- Sidebar mechanisms create additional constraints
- Specialty equipment + training needed
- Often the customer's preference is to replace + receive new keys
When impressioning isn't the answer

Impressioning customers should understand the process takes time; managed expectations.
Identity verification
Critical for impressioning (and any locksmith work):
- Photo ID
- Proof of ownership
- Documentation
- Customer signature acknowledging the work
A locksmith who skips ID verification is a security risk.
Customer education
For impressioning customers:
- "I'll create a new key from your lock without damaging it"
- "The process takes 30-90 minutes typically"
- "Your existing lock will work; we don't need to replace anything"
- "I'll keep filing until the key works smoothly"
A patient process; the customer should be educated on the timeline.
Practice and skill
Impressioning is a skill:
- Multi-month learning curve
- Best learned with mentorship
- Practice on disposable locks
- Time required to develop the sensitivity for impressions

Cost considerations
Impressioning service:
- Price it as labor, not as a key. The blank is nearly free; the billable is the 30 to 90 minutes of skilled bench time plus the trip. Quote a service call plus a time window, not a per-key rate.
- Quote a range and a cap. Give the customer the expected window and a not-to-exceed point where you stop and switch to drilling and re-keying, so a stubborn cylinder does not turn into an open-ended bill.
- Compare it honestly against the alternative. Impressioning usually lands in the same neighborhood as drill-and-replace once you count the new cylinder and the re-key, and it leaves the customer's existing hardware intact. That is the pitch: same order of cost, no hardware replaced.
- Where it clearly wins on cost: high-security or restricted cylinders where replacement hardware is a multiple of standard, antique or architectural hardware with no drop-in replacement, and master-keyed systems where a replaced cylinder means re-pinning the whole system.
- Where it loses: standard residential deadbolts and knobs, where a new cylinder plus re-key is faster than the impressioning session and the customer gets new hardware out of it. Offer the choice and let them pick.
- Track your own success rate and average time by lock type. That number is what makes your quote accurate. A locksmith still building the skill should expect to eat time on the learning curve rather than bill it.
- Charge the trip either way. If the lock resists impressioning and the customer declines to move to drilling, the diagnostic time and travel are still billable. Say that up front, not at the door afterward.
